Why are people obsessed with groups they know nothing about?

I rarely talk about Kpop in real life but for lunch I met up with 2 old Kpop friends so of course that’s all we talked about. They’re both girl group Stans but our entire lunch was me trying to correct their BS beliefs about boy groups. They were so adamant about a bunch of fake stuff that I was just in shock. Some of the stuff I had to deal with is listed below.

For example.

“Renjun won’t join the upcoming NCT China Unit because he’s Korean.†First of all WHAT UPCOMING UNIT. SM has made no announcement so sit down and Renjun’s ethnicity/nationality has been covered a thousand times, so educate yourself and also you don’t have to be the same ethnicity/nationality as your Unit, Yuta & Winwin are both in the Seoul Unit and they’re Japanese and Chinese.

“Lay is flopping in China. So why doesn’t he just join Exo’s Winter comeback.†He was just named Man Of The Year, he’s won a ton of awards, he’s literally doing the opposite of flopping.

“Why does a group need 17 members.†It took me a moment to realise that she was talking about Seventeen who have thirteen members, she wouldn’t believe me until I made her google it.

“BTS needed a translator the entire time they were in the States, why don’t they just learn English like Psy?†As an Exo L it hurt to have to defend BTS but I made myself do it. I told them that Rap Monster speaks fluent English and so most likely did most of the translating anyway and as far as I know some members are trying to learn English. They showed me a clip of Ellen with a translator, so I asked to see all their other interviews to see if it was the same and they both went quiet.

“Super Junior don’t have a single talented member, how are they from SM?†Donghae has more talent in his pinky finger than all the girls they stan put together and Heechul is a King, don’t come for him.

My lovely lunch was turned into some sort of fact checking session, If you don’t know anything about a group, why do people insist on talking about them?

you should drop them

i don't play with demons

why were they even shit talking about them in the first place

Every boy group I bought up they just roasted with fake bs, I could have easily slandered their girl group faves but I didn’t know enough about them to use. I rarely see them and after today, I’m not in a rush to see them again.

not obsessed, I wouldnt call it that, but people will always make conclusions and assumptions based on what info they have on hand, even if it's very little info. if they are gg stans and dont follow boy groups, then I can understand why they would think that. I'm glad you helped clear up some of their assumptions ^.^

edit: It may be that they're the type to not like bg all that much so that's why they have no problem roasting them

I think it is even worse when they spend hours to keep themselves updated on what a group does so they can bash them or worse to cause problems by starting rumours.

See I don’t understand that, if I don’t like a group, I don’t go looking for information, I ignore them but these girls didn’t even have accurate information, they were just making crap up.

Yeah it annoyed me when some people said Wanna One are better than they thought/ are actually good during MAMA/ MMA when they used to trash them..  Like girl you were calling them ugly and untalented when you never heard their music/ never seen them perform at all ???!!  why would you ??

Me neither. Wasting my precious time like is crazy. They are the first to watch a new mv so they can dislike it. They analyse the lyrics, the videos, pretty much everything to find something to create an issue.

It is sad but it is the way things happened in kpop.

a few moments ago I saw a person was hating on a suju member for the thing he never did.. then when people corrected her she came up with the logic that she thought he was kangin.like she doesn't even know the members well but is hating on them because she thinks it's cool.. is it too much for people to focus only on their bias group..

“Super Junior don’t have a single talented member, how are they from SM?â€

this is the best joke I have heard this year..

Disappointed but not surprised. It’s concerning how people don’t even try to get these things right and how much misinformation is out there. That’s why I don’t act like some expert about groups I don’t follow super closely, and look for resources I can trust. Thanks for setting them straight about BTS, lol.

People are so weird, like at least watch them and then trash them. I followed this person on twitter who spent a year low key trashing NCT 127 and then after the MMA’s she was desperate to know who Taeil and Doyoung were because they were such great vocalists. I was so annoyed. When it comes to Wanna One the funniest excuse to not bother watching their mvs/stages is because they’re a temporary group and then the person proceeds to right a long essay on everything she hates about them, but why are you getting so mad over a temporary group?

Well someone from twitter compared the speech of Jongin and they all mocked and laugh because he said that exols dont just keep exo warm but other people as well.. they didnt understand and laugh at him.. little did they know its because of his magazine thats for charity.. when exols corrected them, well they said they dont follow exo - exactly.. well does jongin need to explain it to you guys and youre not an exol, theyre not talking to you..

I wonder what its like fighting about kpop irl I've only done it online

It’s intense in a weird way because you can’t yell or storm off or slam your computer shut and you’re in a public place so you have to watch your language when all you want to do is curse at ignorance in front of you. I did get a funny look when I whisper yelled that 17 has 13 members, it must have been so confusing to anyone eavesdropping.

People just listen to what others are saying and mindlessly repeat it. It’s sad how much people miss out on by not opening up their minds to everything this genre has to offer but whatever. Their loss. Every group may not be everyone’s thing all the time but there’s so much talent out there. At least respect the effort.

I know the bare minimum about BTS but I’ve seen enough Armys go on about RM’s English and how a few members are trying to learn it. It was the stupidest thing to insult and they both clearly knew that they didn’t need a translator as they’d seen every American interview they’ve been on but they thought that my pride as an Exo L and my avoidance of all things BTS related meant that I would just ignore it and jump on their hate train but I just couldn’t do it.

I laughed at the Suju remark as well, I was about to whip out my phone and give them a lesson on talent. People just love to join the hate wagon, when Siwon’s dog scandal erupted, there were so many Suju experts popping up who knew nothing about the group.

honestly I find this so funny .every time a controversy happens with suju all fans became their fans and goes like "I am an elf but I hate them now" to make their point valid,, lmao.

but they don't even know anything about them.

I think it starts with an actual anti, someone who makes up rumors or spreads unfavorable misinformation about the group. Then people who don't really have the motivation to know better see that negative stuff and take it for gospel because that's all they know about the group. It's a combo of disinterest, saltiness, and lack of critical thinking

SuJu is a really good example bc anytime one members has any sort of scandal, you get the "every member in that group is trash" comments and people who don't know SuJu would look at those and think, "wow, what a trash group" and move on with that tainted opinion. tbh I wouldn't have gotten in SJ if the first thing I saw about them were netizen comments

omg SJ is the first group coming to my mind where there isnt even one single untalented member.. not one. SJ dont have a death weight. All have talent and are good or even extrem good in that field.. Tell me random a SJ name and i will tell what talent he have and in what he is good..
