Have you ever made the grave mistake of confusing Pyeongchang and Pyongyang?

Luckily I haven't but I'm worried that one day I'll commit that mistake when I'm not fully awake loll ^^'

Which reminds me, is there any specific reason they chose Pyeongchang for the Olympics?  Like, does it have the biggest winter stadium in Korea or sth?  Is there no other city with equally capable facilities to host the event?

not entirely confused but sometimes when I read articles half asleep I jolt up like 'PYONGYANG is gonna host the OLYMPICS????????'

that shock wakes me up and I read the sentence again and go 'oh ................. nvm.......................'

and I think the cities are chosen by voting, no? not by size or whateva

All the time. lol I understand that my brain is like a sieve but every time I see something about the Olympics I think, wait, is that in North Korea?! And I feel very stupid because I have studied both Korea's extensively and I know they are not the same. Dementia at 37. smh

1. haven't really had a chance to, I hadn't even heard of pyeongchang before it was announced as the olympics location (and is obvious that it's not north korea hosting. no doubt ignorant people will make incessant jokes about it tho)

2. from what I understand it was a kinda lowkey skiing destination prior to this since it's mountainous, but SK probably just picked it because they can't exactly host the winter olympics in the middle of seoul or busan, and they already did the summer olympics in seoul in 1980 anyway (has both winter and summer ever been in the same city??). plus SK obv wanted to do olympics as a second coming-out party as their economy, infrastructure, tourism and soft power are bigger than ever and it was time to showcase that, soooo....they needed to pick somewhere

I've never gotten them confused lol, I know PyeongChang very well due to figure-skating anticipation, as Kim Yuna is a spokesperson and Yuzuru will be competing in the 2018 Olympic games.

Nah the only time ive gotten it confused was when a site actually reported itll be held in pyongyang, like would it have hurt them to fact check

Right?! I think the main problem is I don't know much about Pyeongchang other than the winter Olympics will be there but I read about Pyongyang all the time so it is familiar to me. 

 

Case in point, I'm on my Chromebook and spell check didn't have a problem with Pyongyang but suggested I change Pyeongchang to Pyongyang! Even computers get them mixed up. lol

and yayy another figure skating fan here!  I'm rooting so hard for yuzu you have no idea, and it'd be so cute if we get a few more interactions between him and yuna like last time in sochi

Unfortunately, yes lol. when i first heard it i srsly thought it was in nk and that went on for like the whole summer until i saw advertisements and news of its location just this fall and im just like wow i am such a dumbass lol

And I read somewhere that pyeongchang won the vote to host 2018 winter olympics against france and germany so that’s how they chose the location
