how long until korean entertainers can come out of the closet without ruining their careers?

i think the time is definitely right for someone with status/money/influence to be able to come out without jeopardizing their careers. the problem is just that no one wants to take that first step.

a lot of idols and actors have already insinuated or straight up admitted to being gay, but their fans do everything in their power to bury it, or make it out to be a joke or a mistranslation.

given all the overprotective fans, there's also the question of HOW one would even come out and be taken seriously.

a lot of people have said that bts could probably survive one of their members being outed, since they have a large international fanbase, but in my experience ifans are just as homophobic as kfans so idk....

for male celebrities the military is also a big factor. i strongly doubt anyone's gonna come out before serving their time, given the systematic persecution of gay men in the korean army.

anyways i hope that by 2020 it will be safe for public figures to come out, although that's probably a little optimistic of me. rlytearpls.png

Korea is not ready for this, I honestly hope they keep it private for now, they're still Homophobic af and I can't see it ending well for their Careers. Whoever takes the step and announce it to the Public will be very brave and could bring about a change. But it's too risky.

I think, right now, it's doable if you're not an actor or idol. MRSHLL isn't a big name by any means, but I follow him on Instagram and he has a lot of connections within the Korean music industry. I think it also helps that he's viewed as more American than Korean and really isn't in the public eye at the moment.

Never probably, kpop is marketed as an alternative to Western media mostly in Asian countries (which many of those countries consider Western Media to be quite impertinent). So they have to act conventional and conservative if they don't want to lose their actual fan-base. And considering how many of those cultures dislike the concept of being homosexual, I'd say only when the current system breaks down, such a thing would happen. (i.e. as far as I know it is a sin to be gay in Islam which many South East and Central Asians believe in like Malaysia, Kazakstan, Uzbekistan and there have always been many kpop fans from there).

Even considering only South Korea, I think it is not easy for an idol to be openly homosexual, older people would dislike that. But there are celebrities like Hong Seok-Cheon, Harisu and Kim Jihoo (who sadly killed himself in '08).

But maybe if the younger generation is more accepting about it, after around 50 years, it could be okay but I don't think that is the case.

You can correct me on any information I have given if they are wrong.

Maybe I'm optimistic, but within a decade. I feel SK is fast becoming more aware of International mores (like Blackface is being condemned even by stans, knowledge of feminism) - and the elderly and conservative Christian bigotry is being fought against by youth.

Despite hate towards army-shirkers like MC Mong, they are still getting to release and finding roles. So soon enough, a non-idol may get away with coming out.

When the entire GP has changed; from conservative generation that say most things that are not right as taboo to a generation full with open-minded people. I see that people open more to uncommon things, little by little. There will never be "never" as long as idols keep showing their support to LGBT community.
