Sort of.

I personally think that they get too much hate for the "box" sets, and it's kind of written off as a half-assed gesture.

But if you really think about it, SM has all of these sets custom made. Look at all of those fucking lights going through some of their sets, look at those details. They definitely don't come cheap. You'll never see SM music video with a brick wall that you've seen in ten other music videos and you won't see an SM video with Flaxton Street.

The music videos, while they may not have a story, are very aesthetically pleasing in my opinion, and are just really nice to watch, like a moving picture. I do think that they could give a little more variety in their non-dancing shots, but I honestly don't dislike it as much as other people do. It seems like some people just think that just because someone else has a story, that it's a better music video. But let's be real: SM kind of sucks at making storyline videos, so I kind of prefer what they're doing now.

Honestly, I didn't see as many complaints about it as I do now until Simon and Martina complained about it. Which, you know, fine, it's their opinion, but I think it's kind of narrow-minded to look past the effort that goes into the sets and kind of sad that it seems like some people developed bandwagon opinions.

The box sets have never really bothered me. SM's speciality is performance and the box style showcases it better. They don't need anything elaborate, their mv's are already awesome so why pay for more expensive sets.

^

That aside they've done plenty of out of box MVs for many of their artists. Some a lot more than others, but still.

Good point.

Although RPPP was disappointing to some because of Pink Tape's art film. I think people were expecting something along those lines, which could have been much more interesting.

But they have box MVs and dancing versions of those box MVs, don't they?  (ie. without the closeups and stuff.)  So apparently "fans" ask for (or receive) dance versions whether or not the real MV is in a box or not.  (As well as dance practices...)

To be honest, I was one of those disappointed fans, lol.

What I liked about the art film was that they weren't trying to push some ridiculous story. It really was just an "art film" with mostly them just doing things that were visually interesting. Honestly, that's all I ask for in a music video if there's less of a focus on the dance performance aspect.

I was, too T___T

Agreed. In f(x)'s case, I saw potential. I think SM is capable of bringing more creative ideas to the table, but the box MV is still a safe option that can be pleasing, and they probably are unwilling to go that far to change things. -__-
