Lynt 6,789
Users on reddit (YESthisisnttaken and absentislands) took the time to properly and logically explain why BlackPink's faces were "blurred out" on the MAMAs last night. Yes I'm always aboard for a Mnet hate train, and I am no way ever a fan of them, BUT after reading their post, I hope clearer heads prevail and people can spread the word that in THIS instance Mnet weren't purposefully being scummy. Go upvote the post here: https://www.reddit.com/r/kpop/comments/7gxq45/the_truth_behind_mnets_dirty_editing_against/But I'll re-post it here for you guys for convenience sake. From this point on, everything written is by YESthisisnttaken ______________________ As some of us know, Mnet apparently has blurred BP's faces out on the MAMA awardsBut I think some of us are getting confused by camera problems. There are two issues at work here: Encoding/Compression, and Recording a LED screen on a camera Encoding/Compression: When camera footage is being encoded when they are transferred to different platforms, specific objects in the video can ruin the quality of the video.Basically what happens is that the video encoder has to show the extra fine dots moving around. In this case, the pixels moving on the giant screen on the MAMA Stage. You see them above BP's photos? What this does is blends similar-looking objects together. You can see this effect in action from a snip of the demonstration video: Things that can be blended easily together include objects that are very similar in color.Comparing the Girl Group profile photos used on the MAMA stage (These photos are completely unaltered), it doesn't take a lot to see that BP's was the only one with a heavy gradient. [Pics in spoiler] Looking at a fancam angle. Click here to view the Tweet We can see that the other Girl Groups also received damage from encoding problems(again, unaltered screenshots): GFriendRed Velvet:Twice:BlackPink: LED:When you record a LED screen on a camera, images tend to be overexposed. I don't have to explain this, anyone who's tried to record a television/computer screen on a phone will know what I'm talking about. To FURTHER VERIFY THIS and confirm that I'm not just spewing cow crap, I went ahead and used a well-known image encoder: "Needs more JPEG" and used images that * I SATURATED SIMILARLY TO HOW THEY ARE ON THE LED SCREEN STAGE*Here are the results: I hope you can see how various effects and camera angles on stage can destroy an image from a certain view, but let's not start theories off of it. And oh God don't you dare call me biased I swear to God I really really tried to be unbiased. Even though I stan RV and Loona I am also a huge fan of Jisoo so don't you dare call me biased. ______________________ I hope this clears things up! I was going to post this in the initial hate thread, but I thought this deserved a post on its own for people to be more aware.

Mees Madds 36,578
That seems like what happened. But that original pic of Blackpink though...why is that pic a thing? Their faces are completely red smh. YG and their poor choices in teaser pics. Also, Mnet could have chosen a different picture.

Joon 8,222
The should have used a different picture, I don’t blame BP fans for being mad. I knew as soon as I saw it though that it was something like this but didn’t have the technical knowledge to understand how it happened. Thanks for the post. gore 8,169
people in the other thread tried explaining it but some people have moved the goalposts from "mnet blurring out blackpinks faces" to "mnet doing a rehearsal for this where they run thru everything and saw the red blobs of their face and still did nothing aka still deliberate". lol
Chantage 2,400
People are dumb. Why would they blur a pic but SHOW ENTIRE PARTS of AIIYL MV in many VCRs throughout the night? Smh

holahuz 2,585
LOL at they should have figured this out at rehearsal. MNet couldn't even point the cameras in the right direction during performances. Thats not easy. Live show editing is a pain in the ass. Usually graphics already prep at least a week or 2 before the show. Major change can mess everything. But whats funny is they don't bother looking for HD file but then i don't know if they exist

shugwi 12,550
but the original picture without all the light effects was already saturated (edited) the main issue is that they didn't bother to double check before it was broadcasted on tv Click here to view the Tweet
remembering 7,109
Thanks for the education but it's not like Mnet didn't know beforehand. Like I said, they would have tested all the pics and seen the problem on in their control room. One thing to add: you guys make it sound like MAMA is nugu. As if they don't know the encoding would be a problem . They knew and didn't bother fixing it.
