In Korea, What does a download cost!?

Hey!

I'm trying to figure out how places like MelOn and Monkey3 work for K-fans and what the difference between a Download and Streaming is.

With MelOn, users pay $8 a month and are loaned 150 songs. But does that mean they have to give the songs back, and if that's the case then they aren't technically "downloading" the song, they are only allowed to play it on their Melon players, right? I was wondering if they choose to download the song does it cost them more money.

For example, I have the Genie App, and I noticed that streaming the song is different than downloading it. When I purchased the album it was like 10 dollars taken right from my account but I don't think it would have cost me that much to stream it directly.

Sorry if I'm not making any sense, but I never understood these music sites and how they work! *sighs*

PLEASE HELP!! Thanks!

Hey!

Download=buying a legal copy to put onto your computer/phone/iPod, etc.

Stream=playing the song on the web or with the site's streaming app

Downloads are actual digital copies saved to your computer, they are not temporary "loans".

You can download individual songs for 600 won (~50 cents) or use the subscription package. For 150-song packages usually the cost is about 7-8 cents per song if you use them all. (if you don't use up the downloads in the month then you lose them)

I'm not sure about Genie, but on other sites you have the option of buying a streaming-only package (about $3-$4 a month), which allows you unlimited play of any song available through the site. You can also buy download-only packages or a combo streaming/download package (price varies depending on number of downloads).

OMG!!! This is such a big help!! Thanks so much!!! Is that 150 songs per month and are they like Audible.com (audio books you only have access to if you have a monthly or yearly subcription), where you lose access to all of your songs if you don't continually pay the monthly fee?

Yes, it's per month. You don't lose access even after you stop your subscription. Once you download it you get the MP3 file on your computer and it's permanent. On most sites you can even redownload songs you purchased before for a certain amount of time after the original purchase (in case of data loss, etc.)

Wow.. so for what? 96 dollars a year people can walk away with 1800 songs!?! How can anyone actually make a profit off of this!? It seems the real money is definitely in Physical Sales. SMH. Or sales on I-tunes where a song is 1.29 so if you sale 1million singles you make over a million bucks. Wow... interesting... Thanks for the explanations!!

MelOn works this way:

You pay a certain amount per month to be allowed to stream songs unlimited on the MelOn account.

Based on which songs get streamed the most (by percentage) these songs get a cut of the overall streaming fees that Mel)n collects from all their users. This doesn't end up being much though.

Streaming costs:

PC: 3900 if you pay every month for a year

or 5400 won for only 1 month at a time

Mobile: 3400 every month 4400 one month

MelOn has millions of users.

For downloads you can buy in packages.

The packages rang from 60 to 130 won per download IF YOU BUY THE PACKAGE EVERY MONTH

Normally it to between 80 to 180 won per download if you dont buy the package every month

There is a discount for T members but that discount is absorbed by the T memberships and doesn't impact how much artists/companies make

BUT you must use these downloads in a certain amount of months at which point they expire so its a use it or lose it.

Therefore not everyone will buy the cheapest package because they might now want to download so many songs.

Plus you download the songs onto your MelOn account not your computer or device so you need to maintain your MelOn account to have access to the songs. To maintain the account you must pay the monthly streaming fee.

If you buy a package and the streaming fee at once you get a discount from melOn

If someone were to use the 150-song subscription then yes, but I believe the most common subscription used is the streaming+30 download one, which increases the cost per song a bit.
