cake mf 1,737
I’ve started thinking about my future and tbh none of the majors I’d be able to take at a college interest me. My grades are pretty good (my lowest grade is a B-) but school just makes me depressed tbh, I skip a lot and get in trouble for it. And my parents won’t be able to afford it, they’re already going into debt for my sister’s college. So now I’m thinking after high school maybe I should go to cosmetology school? I could probably afford it myself if I saved up during high school. Plus, beauty is something I love and am good at. The only thing I’m worried about is disappointing my parents. I need to know what I want to do before I go into HS next year so I know what classes to take (there’s two different course requirements for people who want or don’t want to go to college). If I only take the district requirements, in a couple years there’s no going back and I won’t be able to go to uni. And my mom thinks I have no plan in life but I do, I just don’t think she’ll approve.
Hopkinz 3,195
Yikes! That's way too early to make those kinds of decisions. 8th graders shouldn't be deciding what they want to do for the rest of their lives, heck college kids don't even know. Listen to what your parents have to say, I'm sure they know what is best for you for now.
tang 1,194
tbh you can never know what you will want few years later i made a similiar decision years ago and now suffering from it. i realized im too anxious to pursue what i actually love. but few years back i was so sure i'd be able to do it and had plans set like you too. if i was in your place i'd pursue for college first and maybe pick up some part time jobs to not get in too much debt during college. BUT this is your life and im just talking from what i experienced, you might have a completely different experience in the end.
нex 96
I get that the users above advice you to be cautious and go to college, and I agree. But on the other hand, I also think that if you study something you don't like, it might be hell for you, you might hate having to study it and doing the assigments, skipping classes etc, and end up regretting it an not doing well enough to pass. Either way, you have to talk about it with your parents and think carefully how you will teel them your decision. If their only worry is that you know what you want to do, then I guess telling them about the cosmetology school will go well. But if they want you to go to college, then idk... cherrimotion 822
I don't think it's a bad idea at all. You will be doing something you enjoy and it's useful for you to get a job in the future. You should talk to your parents about it and discuss in general (whenever you're ready)

Yeah but at the same time my parents grew up in a different country...and both of them went to college for free (my dad was an immigrant and got a huge scholarship, my mom went to college in our home country where state college is free). They’ve never really been in the same situation as me. Plus in our home country they just look at your college entrance exams, not your classes or grades like they do here. In my area almost everyone’s a 2nd gen so there’s a lot of pressure to figure out what you want to do early, nobody can afford to go into adulthood undecided. My parents tell me to do what I love but choose something I can actually make money in lol. tbh you can never know what you will want few years later i made a similiar decision years ago and now suffering from it. i realized im too anxious to pursue what i actually love. but few years back i was so sure i'd be able to do it and had plans set like you too. if i was in your place i'd pursue for college first and maybe pick up some part time jobs to not get in too much debt during college. BUT this is your life and im just talking from what i experienced, you might have a completely different experience in the end. If I decide to go to college I think I’ll go to a 2 year first...cost of life is really expensive here, a part time job will barely cover necessities let alone a university. And asking my parents for help is probably going to be off the table..they’re paying for my sister’s schooling and she wants to become a doctor so uhhhh...yeah.... That’s my main fear about going the academic route. I barely passed my classes last year tbh. I’m just not good at working in school. That’s why I skip classes so much, it’s easier to just study a textbook and take a test for me, so I never listen in class and study when I get home. Idk if my parents are expecting me to go to Harvard lol. My best subjects are ela and social studies but you can’t exactly major in those lol. I don't think it's a bad idea at all. If they are worried about whether you will be able to make money from it or not, I guess you should research about jobs related to that and explain what exactly you want to work as, show that it's profitable and show yourself confident about what you want to do. Yeah I guess, and either way I’m going to be 18 when I graduate so there’s not much they can do. I think you should do what you want, not what your parents want you to do I guess... choi 211
Do your best and get good grades in high school, take the difficult route. Then you can worry about what happens later and still have the opportunity to apply. It's bad to rush a major you don't like Sent from my SM-G930F using OneHallyu mobile app
