Cricket Hero Andrew ‘Freddie’ Flintoff is convinced Earth is flat (or the very least, turnip-shaped)

  • 'Freddie' said he has become obsessed with a podcast called The Flat Earthers
  • Their conspiracy theory claims the spherical Earth was concocted by Disney
  • It was first speculated by the Greeks and has been accepted as fact for more than 500 years
  • But the ex-cricket star says there is 'evidence to suggest the world isn't round'

Former England cricket star Andrew Flintoff has admitted he is convinced the world is flat- or at least 'bulbous, like a turnip'.

'Freddie', 39,  admitted he has become obsessed with a podcast called The Flat Earthers.

The show is a genuine conspiracy theory claiming the earth being round was a lie peddled by Disney - despite the assertion of a spherical planet having been around since the Ancient Greek era, and having been the popular belief since Christohper Columbus' famed voyage in 1492.

Speaking on his own podcast, for BBC 5 Live with former Wales footballer Robbie Savage, Flintoff ignored all satellite photos of Earth to suggest there was 'evidence to suggest the world wasn't round'.

And the pair are even deliberating a trip to next year's The Flat Earth International Conference in America.

He said: 'If you’re in a helicopter and you hover why does the Earth not come to you if it’s round?

'Why, if we’re hurtling through space, why would water stay still? Why is it not wobbling? Also if you fire a laser about 16 miles, if the world was curved, you shouldn’t be able to see it but you can.'

He added: 'The middle is the North Pole, around the outside is the South Pole which is like a big wall of ice. This is why all governments now have bases on the South Pole.'

It is not the only bizarre admission that Flintoff has made in recent months - he confessing on his show earlier this year that he wears a FitBit during sex.

He said it was to encourage him to 'work a bit harder to impress his wife' - but she says she is definitely not a fan of technology in the bedroom.

Flintoff says he is trying to burn through around 4,000 calories a day and even monitors the intimate moments with his wife.

The Flat Earth Conspiracy Theory

  • Those who believed the Flat Earth Theory claim our planet is shaped like a flat disc instead of a sphere.
  • Because Earth's surface looks and feels flat when we walk around it, the conspiracy theorists denounce all evidence to the contrary.
  • The leading theory suggests Earth is a disc with the Arctic Circle in the centre and Antarctica, a 150-foot-tall (45-metre) wall of ice, around the rim.
  • Theorists claim that satellite images and evidence pointing to a spherical Earth are part of a 'round Earth conspiracy' orchestrated by Nasa and other government agencies.
  • Followers of the bizarre theory also claim the Earth is stationary in space rather than orbiting the sun.
  • But the international scientific community has consistently denounced the bizarre theory, putting forward decades of space imagery and astronomical research to back their claims.
  • The Flat Earth society has seen an increase of around 200 members a year since 2009.

Not sure if they are doing it just for attention really

That is a possibility.

Also however ridicolous I find their claims, I do applaud them to some degree for standing up their beliefs even when they know they will be ridiculed for them. I also feel sorry for them a bit. I can't imagine what it must be like to live in a world where you believe that everything that challenges your belief is a hoax planted by "the others". And you can't educate them since they'll consider proof that other proofs are real is also a hoax. I've seen the latter numerous time with youngearthers.

There is a fine line between standing up for their beliefs and being plain ridiculous tho lol. Gravity and horizons are 2 of many reasons but we could go on forever right? smile.png

Edit: Reminds me of this.

True that. One thing this world isn't lacking is idiots. It's really scary how many don't understand how science works.

I'm really glad I'll be dead before the climate changes becomes so bad there wont be enough water, food or land for humans. And I'm really sorry all the climate change deniers will be too, they should be forced to live in the world they made.

pretty sure those deniers will breed more deniers then they will live to see what Earth is going to be like.
