If place into this string a portion of [my] feelings,
the North Star will echo[2] with it from afar.
Taking out once more this paulownia wood guqin[1] for you,
I yet again put so much heart into playing it.

The you who unlocked the shackles on my ankles
Is humming [in] an unfamiliar accent while walking in the palace.
When I was playing the guqin for the King, I turned and saw you.
Hidden deep in the sound of [the guqin's] strings are the emotions of [our] first encounter.

The moonlight often often often often reaches [my] hometown,
Delivering back how many sad sighs of the departed ones.
Swallowing that spoonful of warm congee that you fed me,
[i know that] these months and years can quietly pass by.

The lights sway and flicker. The entire capital is listening to the rain.
The night wind sends a few ripples scattering.
You are outside the door, listening to me practicing this song.
I prepare a straw rain cape for you.

The sound of [my] guqin reaches the homes of the commonfolk.
Some are laughing while others are crying.
Once [my] love reaches such a depth, I too cry a single drop of tear.
With the snapping of the string, [i am] again in a homesick mood.

You shape your fingers into a butterfly and take flight from the window sill.
[The butterfly] flies past my fingertips and my brows.
The sound of [my] breathing gradually becomes tranquil only because of you.
Let me blow out the lamp and embrace you.

On winter solstice, the King sets me free to return to my hometown alone.
I carry my guqin on my back and, with every step I take, I gaze back into the palace.
You start humming that half-song[3] that we both know so well.
Mixed with it are your muffled sobs.

[it's] a long long long long journey to [my] hometown,
[Like] the verses of a poem that humans cannot walk through to the end.
compose my joys and sorrows into a song and play it for you.
It is only then that I feel the sadness of not being able to freely do what I wish.

月光常常常常照故里

The moonlight often often often often shines on [my] hometown.
I am a fish that has been placed back into the pond.
Thinking of that spoonful of warm congee that you fed me,
That's where this memory ends.
These months and years are still quietly passing by.

T/N:

[1] Technically, ç´ can refer to any string instrument. In the Eastern repertoire, ç´, without further specification, tends to refer to the å¤ç´ (guqin), a Chinese seven-stringed member of the zither family.

[2] 呼应 is a back-and-forth call and answer.

[3] 阙 is a length of poetry or lyrics. In the olden days, some poems and song lyrics are divided into halves called 上阙 ("upper"/first que) and 下阙 ("lower"/second que).
