Christianity & Kpop

Hi friends. I've been thinking about leaving Kpop for a while because of my faith, and I've been mulling and praying over one question, is fandom inherently idolatry? Often times we especially, young people become heavily involved in fandom whatever fandom it may be. We invest ourselves so heavily in it and it's not uncommon to see people who base their entire identities on fandom. So I thought about this question and turned to scripture. Of course scripture can both be a rebuttal and an aide to my point so let's take a look.

Psalm 150:3 says "Praise him with the sounding of the trumpet, praise him with the harp and lyre." This is often applied to Christian music but can be applied to any type of media/art really, or anything as seen in 1 Corinthians 10:31 "So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God." In theory listening to kpop and enjoying it like all things can be done to the glory of God.

Let's move onto the rebuttal! Ezekiel 14:3-4 says "Son of man, these men have set up their idols in their hearts and have put right before their faces the stumbling block of their iniquity Should I be consulted by them at all? "Therefore speak to them and tell them, 'Thus says the Lord GOD, "Any man of the house of Israel who sets up his idols in his heart, puts right before his face the stumbling block of his iniquity, and then comes to the prophet, I the LORD will be brought to give him an answer in the matter in view of the multitude of his idols"

That brings us back to the original question, is fandom idolatry? The short answer in my opinion is no, if done to the glory of God. As a christian you're allowed to enjoy things so long as you're consuming them healthily and know in your heart they're not harming your spirit. I'd love to hear your opinions on this both from believers and secular oh users! Thanks for reading.

I agree!I really should talk about theology more with you. But just be aware some not so nice replies are coming..

I'm fine with that. I thought it was an interesting question to pose both to believers and non-believers. But thank you for the kind response!

Idolatry is when you are worshiping, and worshiping is not the same as being a big fan of something. as long as you're not worshiping like some saesang's do with their shrines and shit, it wont matter

Also Keep in mind back then, if we go by historical contextm what they meant as idols were pagan gods and other ''prophets'', not idols as in kpop idols

Onehallyu is the wrong place to talk about this. Most of these people are atheists and could give a damn about Christ or any other religion. I know a handful of Christians/other religions on here and that's it.

not really most of OH is religious. 80% of the users here are from Philippines, Malaysia and indonesia which are heavily muslim/christian countries

this is an interesting perspective that i never considered before

Ah! Thank you, I think considering perspectives both secular and theistic is important when discussing faith!

My answer is no, because we aren’t literally worshiping these idols as Gods. Being a fan =/= worship. In my opinion anyways. Like you said OP, we can enjoy everything in moderation.

I would agree wholeheartedly!

Just reminded me why I'm so close to becoming a full fledged atheist.

I apologize if i've offended you. I thought it was an interesting question to pose and I appreciate your response.

Atheists will be mean tk you.You really shouldn't try to discuss anything with them here.

We shouldn't generalize people like that, I'd still love to hear their perspective on the topic.

Just because they're from these places does not mean they share in their religion. I've seen many people on here say that where they live is highly religious but they are not. Yes from what I've have seen in my years on here most people on here are not for any kind of religion.

I'm not sure what passage you're referring to. If you could give me a scriptural reference that would be great!

edit I believe you're referring to Genesis 19:30-36. If you could pm me so we can discuss if you like that would be great.

I'm agnostic currently and despite my personal views I'll never disrespect ones beliefs.

Some people really NEED something to believe in.

And to answer your question, OP, unless you're building shrines to KPOP stars, you should be fine in your religion.

Oh no, you didn't offend me!

This is a public forum you should post what you feel (as long as it's not trolling or anything lol).

I left a response to your post in my last post btw ilikeitplz.png

I was raised Christian, and in our particular denomination there was a lot of disdain held for "secular media." Musically, anything not explicitly about God or Jesus or being a Christian was inherently sinful and the people listening to it were at risk of corruption.

Now, I'm an atheist and admittedly, being raised in such an extreme and limiting church I have a sort of bitterness toward religion.

But in the past year or two I've begun trying to be more neutral about everything in order to get along with my family and be more understanding toward people in general.

I don't think that fandom is idolatry. Most of us don't raise these people/things/whatever up to the level of a deity. We are simply fans of them, enjoy their work, and videos of them entertain us and make us smile. Maybe like 0.01% of people take it to beyond normalcy and literally worship a celebrity. But the vast, vast majority of people are just engaging in a hobby and having fun talking to others who enjoy the same things.

Sorry I edited it I didn't mean to generalize.

Anyways I am also agnostic but I am agnostic theist.

There is cases when yes, the idolizing aspect of kpop goes overboard like when people just start praising their idols but same can be said for the rest of the music industry and entertainment industry in general. Not just in terms of doing the right thing for your mental and sometimes physical health which I think is part of why idolization is spoken out against in the bible.
