is beauty subjective or objective in your opinion?

i definitely think it's objective, to an extent.

first let me paraphrase one important fact: beauty is NOT synonymous with attractiveness. attraction actually has extremely little to do with apprearances for most people. it's merely a biological reaction.

there are some aspects about what we consider beautiful that are entirely made up and specific to certain cultures/time periods, but there is still a universal beauty standard. things like symmetry, balance and harmony are extremely important all across the globe, as it signifies health, fertility and strong genes.

beauty is very dependent on how “average“ a face is. when images of human faces are morphed together, the composite image becomes much closer to the “ideal†and is perceived as more beautiful than any of the individual images.

i personally prefer strong features, but even so i cannot refute visuals who many consider "plain" or "average" like irene, suzy, cha eunwoo, suho etc.... they're considered beautiful BECAUSE their faces are closer to the average. even without being personally attracted to them, i can still appreciate and acknowledge that they are indeed very pretty.

this is why i kinda just laugh when people say that "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" lmao 0u0plz.png  sounds like wishful thinking to me!

I would say both
Don't ignore fact that our personal definition of beauty can be affected by our complexes and dissatisfaction with appearance.
Like, for example, I have really thin lips (i have not!!), I would prefer someone with fuller lips even tho his/her face is not ideal.

I also prefer strong features,

No. I think people prefer them because they have features which are not likely for Korean people

I think it's both tbh, there are some faces which are considered universally attractive regardless or race or ethnicity. This is objectivity. But when you get to know someone, their personality adds to or takes away from their looks, which is subjectivity.

I remember when I was at school, there was this one girl who I thought was incredibly beautiful. But as I got to know her, I remember thinking, 'huh she's not all that beautiful, what was I thinking?' Her personality wasn't the greatest to say the least, and I legit could not see why I found her so pretty initially. It's like her personality distorted her features, really weird.

yeah that's also true.

suzy's face isn't all that "uncommon" for koreans though, which is partially why i find her popularity so interesting. she represents a more realistic girl next door ideal i guess.

Idk maybe

For me their faces look pretty average, but i guess they have double eyelids, tall nose, small face and other features which Korean people really like.

I find Irene really pretty tho, maybe because she has really good face symmetry

There is definitely a standard for physical attractiveness, but beauty is something different. Some of the ugliest people I've met were those who fit that beauty standard. (And some of the most beautiful people I've met were those who would be considered physically unattractive.)

there's definitely an objective aspect to it, e.g. no one would consider a face with deformities beautiful

Yes this. But also for the most part it is subjective.

Yoona is seen by Koreans as a goddess but I don't find her beautiful at all. On the other hand, I'm not a fan of Song Hye Kyo or Suzy but I can't deny that they are indeed gorgeous. It has nothing to do with attraction as I am not attracted to women at all

oh i definitely agree with you!

people are gonna tear me apart for saying this, but the reason i can't find yoona pretty no matter what, is because she looks very unhealthy to me. she's a perfect representation of all the korean beauty standards that i consider "made up" aka. not inherent in human nature.

but then again, this could just be me being biased from my own culture and upbringing, where girls like seolhyun (fit, athletic, tan, actually has a jaw) are considered much more "ideal".

It's subjective. Sure, there's some objective aspects, like having a normal whole face, nice skin, and displaying the expected secondary sex characteristics, but that can look very different.

There's populations that look nothing like popular cultures ideals. And I mean even outside of the western eurocentric beauty standards debates. What would we find beautiful if we grew up in totally different homogeneous population with no exposure to outsiders? We'd have to find our people beautiful, no? We'd be condition to. It's what we'd see everyday of our lives, who would raise and who we'd desire. Would that lifetime of condition be undone if we were presented with the global ideal?

That's hard to test, but I know the opposite isn't true.
