Yoon Kyun Sang And Jung Hye Sung Compare Their Action Scenes In “Oh, The Mysteriousâ€

DPxpr0RXcAMT-C5.jpg

On the November 28 episode of SBS’s “Night of Real Entertainment,†co-stars Yoon Kyun Sang and Jung Hye Sung commented on their respective action scenes in “Oh, the Mysterious.â€

The drama is about framed death-row convict Kim Jong Sam (played by Yoon Kyun Sang) who escapes prison and accidentally becomes a fake detective, partnered with a talented yet tough detective Jin Jin Young (played by Jung Hye Sung).

Jung Hye Sung’s character is the complete opposite of the sweet and adorable roles the actress has previously played. When asked about the action scenes for her role, she commented, “Actually for what we’ve filmed so far, Yoon Kyun Sang has had more physical action scenes.†Yoon Kyun Sang then explained, “I play more of the action scenes meant for a fool, as in, I get hit a lot. Jung Hye Sung does a lot of cool and flashy actions scenes that are more professional.â€

When the interviewer brought up that his previous roles also required him to get hit a lot, Yoon Kyun Sang joked, “I must not be meant for comfortable roles. Maybe because my body is a good type for action scenes.â€

  • Mysterious Il-seung (Doubtful Victory): Episodes 1-2DV02-00004.jpg

Mysterious Il-seung (Doubtful Victory) promised a lot, but boy did it deliver with its premiere. This show managed to cover action, comedy, mystery, suspense, and the subtlest hint of a romance to come, all in its first hour. There’s a complicated web to unravel here but I’m already completely invested in our hero and his story.

EPISODE 1 RECAP

Two cars careen down the road, locked in a high-speed car chase. The white car’s tinted windows mask its driver but the pursuing black car holds two men in suits. The unknown driver searches frantically through the glove box and then a suitcase as he speeds down the road.

The black car catches up and slams into the rear of the white car. To avoid a collision with an oncoming car, the white car driver exhibits some Fast and Furious-caliber driving techniques to swing out of harm’s way. The black car pulls up even with the white car and the Men in Black shout for the other driver to pull over.

DV01-00022.jpg DV01-00019.jpg

Inside, the unknown driver punches the cigarette lighter and when it pops out, he stops the car. At length, the window rolls down to reveal our hero, KIM JONG-SAM (Yoon Kyun-sang). He sighs that he didn’t want to do anything bad… before lobbing a Molotov cocktail (comprised of tissues and a bottle of toner he found in the suitcase) into the other car. He flashes a cheeky grin and speeds away while the Men in Black stamp out the flames.

Jong-sam’s hands fall on a police badge that reads “Oh Il-seung†but he tosses it aside. He allows himself a satisfied smile and turns up the radio… as a dead body rolls around in the trunk.

Elsewhere, a team of detectives burst into an abandoned home led by JIN JIN-YOUNG (Jung Hye-sung). Inside, they find a trio of druggie squatters. They’re also foreigners and don’t speak a lick of Korean, to lead detective PARK SOO-CHIL’s consternation.

Detective Park and Jin-young search the house and find a cannabis farm. Blitzed out of their minds, the squatters giggle as officer KIM MIN-PYO tries to explain their situation using his limited English. It goes about as well as you’d expect, so the team turns to Jin-young—who’s bragged about graduating from an American high school—to read the criminals their rights.

Rolling her eyes, Jin-young shouts “Attention!†and then proceeds to tap a button on her phone that plays a recording of their rights in English. She asks the trio if they understand, and they cheerfully present their wrists to be cuffed. Hee.

Jong-sam buttons himself into a suit somewhere off the side of the road. He notices the mystery body’s hand dangling out of the trunk and quickly tucks it back in before slamming the lid. He runs back to the road just in time to see a passing bus and chases after it.

Back at the police station, Detective Park announces that they’ll credit Min-pyo with the arrest. Shooting a nervous glance at Jin-young, Min-pyo tries to wave it off but Detective Park is adamant. Jin-young argues that she’s the one who gathered the intel and actually slapped on the handcuffs, but Detective Park points out that they all worked together to complete the arrest. Furthermore, Min-pyo’s been in the same position for six years and recently fathered twins.

DV01-00073.jpg DV01-00062.jpg

Detective Park asks Jin-young to pass the credit but she promises to do it nexttime. Exasperated, Detective Park asks if it’s because she wants to be in first place, but Jin-young doesn’t respond. He says that while she won’t be up for promotion for a while, Min-pyo could advance now with this case. He reiterates that Min-pyo will be credited and dismisses them.

The other detectives scuttle away but Jin-young glares daggers at her team leader before clapping her hands together in a prayer pose. He asks what she’s doing and she bites out that she’s meditating to control her anger. Heh.

After she’s gone, Detective Park wonders what her obsession is with first place. The maknae officer starts to say that Jin-young used to be wealthy before her family’s company went under. but Detective Park snaps at him to be quiet. Waiting for the elevator out in the hall, Jin-young grumbles when she receives a text from her mother, asking her to pay a cheap bill.

COMMENTS

Wow. Now this is the kind of premiere I like to see: a show that grabs the viewer and sucks them into its world. I don’t see how Jong-sam is going to make it back in time, and while I never really expected him to (the premise kind of dictates he stay out of prison), I still found myself sweating along with him in his race against the clock. Jong-sam’s predicament is actually another reason why I love this show because he’s a death-row inmate that’s managed to escape, and yet he’s trying his hardest to get back before they miss him? That alone intrigues me because most people in his position would be trying their best to stay out.

There may be other factors we don’t know yet, but the only reason I could come up with for Jong-sam to willingly return to numbered days was his desire to protect Ddakji. Their friendship is so lovely and it broke my heart when Ddakji started crying because he was going to be released while Jong-sam is condemned to stay. They’re such a cute pair and it’s easy to see how much Ddakji respects and loves Jong-sam. When we went back and discovered that the reason he was chasing down Eun-bi was because she was Ddakji’s sister, I felt a sudden fear that Ddakji had died. It’s a paranoia I always feel when I like a character too much and lives are on the line so I’m glad he’s okay… for now at least.

DV02-00093.jpg

I didn’t expect Jong-sam’s cover as Oh Il-seung to be blown so quickly. Just another way this show puts a different spin on an old setup. I fully expected him to stumble into the identity and manage to pull it off through sheer dumb luck but I cannot express how much I appreciate that that didn’t fly. I do wonder how he’s going to remedy this going forward, but right now, he’s not even thinking about assuming another identity.

Eventually, he’ll have to though, if we’re going to track down the bad guys. That’s going to be quite a feat since at the moment, we don’t even know who they are. Our Men in Black are clearly only a cog in a bigger machine and I wonder how/if they’re connected to whatever landed Jong-sam and Ddakji in jail. I can’t tell which I’m dying to know about more, the past or the future.

It’s not just the murder mystery that raises questions about Jong-sam’s past but also his ties with Jin-young. She’s an interesting character all on her own as a former rich girl turned the breadwinner for her family. She’s sassy and smart and does not play well with others. But it’s her reaction when she saw Jong-sam that intrigues me the most, because she instantly recognized him just as he did her, and I don’t know why. Is it just because she knows Jong-sam became a murderer? Or is there more to this story? I’m putting my money on the latter.

  • Mysterious Il-seung: Episodes 3-4doubtfulvictory0304-00056.jpg

These episodes are rich with backstory. We learn early on what connection our two leads have, what brought our hero to prison, and what tragedy led him down the path in the first place. It’s a lot of knowledge, and some of it overwrought, but I suspect that there are still a lot of twists and turns up ahead. And by the end of these episodes, we may even finally meet our show’s mysterious Il-seung.

EPISODE 3 RECAP

Escaped death-row inmate Jong-sam sits anxiously in the stolen car, stopped by the police for running a red light. The officer notes the damaged trunk—the one with the dead body in it—and moves to check it out.

Meanwhile, detective Jin-young is back at the police station requesting prints off the gun used by Jong-sam (while he was posing as detective Oh Il-seung). The gun is still wet, so it’s loaded into a dryer first before the prints can be taken.

doubtfulvictory0304-00030.jpg doubtfulvictory0304-00028.jpg

Back on the road, the officer motions for Jong-sam to pop the dented trunk, and Jong-sam contemplates driving away as he watches the clock strike 9 P.M. There’s no need though, as the Men in Black arrive and smash into the police car with their own. They stop briefly to motion for Jong-sam to follow them, and then they speed away with the officer in pursuit.

Roll call officially starts at the prison, and there’s no signal from Jong-sam. He’s still trying to make it back, and he drives toward his secret entrance while the Men in Black lure the cops away.

doubtfulvictory0304-00046.jpg

To buy Jong-sam some time, his buddy Ddakji plugs the toilet so that it overflows into their cell. He struggles to keep the bathroom door shut while his cellmates and the guards try to tear him away.

The Men in Black have lost the cop and now search for Jong-sam near the hidden prison entrance, but he is unsurprisingly not there waiting for them. Instead, he’s further in the field, and he slams down a grate in the ground before making a run for the prison. Could he be hiding the body? Why?

doubtfulvictory0304-00054.jpg

Jin-young can’t shake the feeling that it’s Jong-sam she saw earlier, so she calls the prison to confirm that he’s still locked up. The guards drag Ddakji over to solitary cell 2 and then head over to check in on Jong-sam in cell 1. When there’s no response, the guards open it up and find it empty. Their radio buzzes, the guard at the front desk asking them to confirm Jong-sam’s presence. They stammer, and then a drop of water falls on the radio. They look up, where they find Jong-sam wedged up near the ceiling. Whew, he made it.

The guards don’t appreciate Jong-sam’s Mission Impossible impersonation and keep him locked in solitary for another night.

doubtfulvictory0304-00073.jpg doubtfulvictory0304-00075.jpg

With Jong-sam’s imprisonment confirmed, Jin-young moves on to her research on murderer-rapist Gil-choon. Detective Park arrives then to berate her for taking the case from the local police. The rest of the team barrel in for the meeting Jin-young has called, and she gets guff from Detective Park for that too.

She shares her thorough research with the team, and by tracking down every Song Gil-choon in the right age range, they find their suspect. They wonder how Gil-choon even managed to grab Eun-bi from a police station, and Jin-young’s tracked that info down too—in the pandemonium, the police assumed he was the detective sent to escort her into protective custody. Wow. These guys need to start checking badges.

COMMENTS

Through quite a bit of elaborate maneuvering, Jong-sam has officially assumed his new life as a detective. But who helped swap him out and save him from his early death sentence issued by the Economics Institute director? And what does that person want from Jong-sam in exchange?

Things are a little over the top and campy at times, but it’s not unenjoyable. There are some jumps in logic and some holes in the plot fabric, but they’re not quite disruptive enough to destroy the show’s charm. I spent a lot of time yelling, “Seriously?!†at the screen, but I still want to see how everything plays out for everyone.

I think the show knows that it’s doing it too. I noticed that every gap in logic that I yelled at in the first two episodes was somehow addressed in these episodes. And while some of the explanations are ridiculous (you’re seriously telling me no one checked for a badge when Gil-choon showed up to kidnap Eun-bi?), at least they know where they’re leaving the audience in disbelief and are prepared to at least try to explain it.

doubtfulvictory0304-00154.jpg

These episodes were about 80 percent exposition, with the smallest amount of movement in the actual plot. They’ve set up the reason our two leads know one another, the reasons our lead knows something about police procedure, the reasons our lead was down on his luck in the first place. Most of these reasons are pretty silly, but we’ve got our structure in place. Each element of the backstory just felt a little heavy-handed and cliched. Why does it always have to be a dead mom lurking in a man’s past? I just felt like we don’t know enough about Jong-sam yet to feel any emotional punch here.

I want to say that the idea of these two kids being convicted is ridiculous, but I’ve consumed enough true crime stories to know that it’s not always about the forensic evidence. Though kicking the crap out of a kid is quite the interrogation technique. The unwavering loyalty between Jong-sam and Ddakji seems to just ensure this pair suffers the most, and I have a feeling we haven’t seen the end of it.

The backstory between Jong-sam and Jin-young, on the other hand, worked a little better for me. She’s uptight, rich, and righteous, and he’s all standoffish-yet-huggable street smarts. The two make a good pair even as young kids, so here’s to hoping that chemistry holds over to their adult selves.

doubtfulvictory0304-00231.jpg

I also liked how we couldn’t quite tell what kind of man Jong-sam’s mentor Detective Kang was. Was he really fleeing without offering any help to Jong-sam? Did he ever actually care for the kid, or did he just want to use him for information? It’s probably a little of both, and it makes him one of the most interesting characters so far, because he’s in that truly gray area.

I’m not quite sure about how I feel about getting all this backstory in the first week. While I hate when things drag out, I do enjoy a little mystery, especially when it comes to the motivations of my characters. If we lay everything on the table too early, the following episodes might feel too linear, just about the new cases and nothing about the circumstances that got our characters to this point. I need a good balance of both. On the other hand, I like the idea of it all pouring out of him while he’s stuck in solitary confinement. It’s the perfect time for the mind to wander and replay all of life’s tragedies.

And we’d better get an entire hour dedicated to Jin-young’s backstory as well. I didn’t mind spending the time with our affable male lead, but I really like what I’ve seen so far of our spunky leading lady, and I require equal character development time, please and thank you.

While the whole thing feels pretty silly so far, there’s been some interesting experimentation with the camera that I’ve appreciated. Some action shots have been really interesting to watch and they keep me fully invested, and the scene with the fog rolling through the field when Jong-sam considers not going back to prison was really lovely and haunting. The camera takes itself surprisingly seriously with its bizarre and goofy story, but again, I’d say the mismatch still doesn’t detract from anything yet.

Honestly, my favorite part of the show so far is the strong supporting cast. I spent the whole hour pointing out all of my favorite side characters from other shows. Our two leads are doing well on their own, but they’ll really excel with an amazing cast enhancing every scene.

“Oh, The Mysterious†Shares Complicated Character Relationship Chart

Oh-the-Mysterious.jpg&key=e82c891599cc22

SBS’s new drama “Oh, the Mysterious†has released its character relationship chart after its first week of airing. The chart is to help viewers understand the drama’s plot, as well as the complicated relationships of the characters.

In the chart, Yoon Kyun Sang (playing the role of Kim Jong Sam and Oh Il Seung) and Jung Hye Sung(Jin Jin Young) are connected with red lines and hearts. Their acquaintance goes way back to their childhoods, but the actual story is set twelve years later when Kim Jong Sam appears in front of Jin Jin Young and declares himself to be detective Oh Il Seung. As Kim Jong Sam tries to hide his true identity, Jin Jin Young continues to become suspicious. All eyes are on the two characters to see how their relationship will develop in the future.

The chart shows that Jang Hyun Sung (Kang Chul Gi) and Yoon Kyun Sang have a teacher-student relationship. Kim Jong Sam met detective Kang Chil Gi when he was young and living off stolen goods. Kang Chul Gi took in Kim Jong Sam and taught him to be a spy, but when Kim Jong Sam was sentenced to death, he disappeared.

Yoon Kyun Sang is also connected to Jun Sung Woo (Ddak Ji) as “blood brothers.†Having grown up together, the two men consider themselves brothers although they’re not related by blood.

The characters are largely divided into two groups in the chart with those on the left being part of Hidden Crime Investigation Unit and those on the right part of Yirim Food Company. The Investigation Unit includes Choi Won Young, Kim Hee Won, Jung Hye Sung, Do Ki Suk, and Kang Shin Hyo as detectives with Yoon Kyun Sang expected to join the team shortly. On the other hand, Yirim Food Company is led by Yoon Yoo Sun and supported by Park Sung Geun and Oh Seung Hoon.
