still at work. on a friday. at 5.15. logged in to spew a few thoughts after reading drambeans recap and comments.

going to post some extracts which i agree / disagree with here:

Mindy: "I don’t think some people realize how hard it is to pull off stoic characters. It’s very easy for them to be boring in the hands of the wrong actor and she has me engaged so far.

I feel like it’s rare to get a drama heroine like Ji-an. Most of dramaland’s poor, struggling heroines are plucky Candys. It’s a nice change to get such a stark, jaded character."

this is a really great point. it might not seem that masterful to walk around and talk quietly and act with no expression, but it's super easy to become boring with that and thankfully she's not boring

"Oh, and I don’t know what the sound mixers are doing with the voices, but I like it. Lee Sun-kyun is a given but IU’s voice also sounded cool in some scenes."

I noticed this too! it sounded like (especially iu's) voices were dubbed over some scenes .. did anyone else notice this?

"In a way I understand why people get triggered because of violent scenes like that and why knetz criticized them. There’s something that i-netz couldn’t quite grasp. There are too many dramas with scenes that inflict physical violence against female actresses and they are oftentimes very graphic and the perpetrators rarely face any consequences in dramas."

I don't agree with this. I think there are plenty of shows which "i-netz" watch that are western and depict scenes where the violence is gratuitous .. especially towards women. it isn't isolated to / or mainly a symptom of asian dramas. that's for certain. game of thrones is one of many many examples.

anyway, i understand the point on violence for violence sake but the scene i feel had a point? it led onto the sunglasses which allowed her to carry out the heist and also show her life as realistically as possible - indebted to a loan shark who clearly has it out for her. people go through shit and its common and it isnt pretty and life doesn't take into account if youre a woman.

... why people are jumping the gun and writing it off as sensationalism is beyond me. tv, i'm afraid is sensational at its core. i do understand the need for discussion because violence towards women in cinema is often excessive and unnecessary. but imo this was not the scene to pin our much needed activism to.

I should probably get back to work now .... more later

bravo!!

very well written sooj!!!

ok, jokes aside

i can say that the second ep blew me away in a number of ways.

what i love about the way it is shot and played is the plethora of unspoken glances, sighs, movements.. a lot of hesitance. you can almost feel the internal contemplations, especially of ji an and dong hoon

the second thing that stroke me was the atmosphere every time ji an and dong hoon interacted with each other. it is such a weird thing to say but it felt so humane and genuine. you could almost feel like both of them were searching for signs to open up to someone, which they have not done before, so there's this feeling of cautious attempts on the part of both

i cannot wait to see how their detached selves will draw closer to each other, not in a romantic way obviously

i am talking nonsense but it resonated with me on many levels. their dialogues, although short, were very poignant. these were only small and sometimes abrupt sentences but you could tell that there was more to it. again, behind the automatized routines of daily reality, i could see them fumble for something meaningful

this drama is very much about existence... and the way melancholic and comic moments are intertwined is very reminiscent of life

and, yes, iu has impressed me... quite often i caught myself thinking that she is somehow living the character rather than playing, you know

lmao. sorry. i'm falling asleep so i have no idea what i am writing. but just wanted to put it into words, even though so sloppily

*clap clap*

thanks for sharing your thoughts.

here's dramabeans recap for ep 2:

http://www.dramabeans.com/2018/03/my-ajusshi-episode-2/

^ there are a lot of discussion going on in the comments, everybody seems to be enjoying the drama!!

but there seems to be confusion as to why LJA gave the money back?

To my understanding, she didn't do it to help DH out, that was just one of many possible outcome. To me, she only returned it because she couldn't keep it.

Her plan to pay off her debt failed because of GI's grudge so the LoanSharks were going to report the money as stolen and get her sent to prison and at the same DH was too suspicious of her and this situation would only get her involved with the police either way, (had she been able to pay her debt as she originally planned, she'd just keep the remaining money and say bye to her job, but I guess she can't afford to do that either at the moment).

So, I took it as the best thing to do was to have to come out with a better plan, which she did.

She has to find a way to have the loan sharks accept her debt payment without implicating her.. but I think this story is not going to be that simple and tbh, this is the plot line I'm interested the most atm.

drama fans are also really rooting for a love line already. it's not that I'm against it at this stage, I just don't think it's needed. There will be too many interesting plot line lost just to set up and give time to a love line which would in turn just fall into the 'same old' category.

That scenario is just not interesting for me.

At the moment I'm way too invested in JA already that the only kind of healing she needs is money, and with that she can move with her grandma to Jeju island and burn everything she left behind to the ground. datassplz.png

This drama is about to make me sad as fuck, huh?

Watching for IU and Lee Sun Kyun. IU's character ... I have never felt so bad for a character before. Wish her nothing but a happy ending. Sun Kyun's character, too.

Hell ... all of the protagonists, tbh.

thank you for posting! i was awaiting your thoughts!

agree! agree! the shots, and scenes with no conversation but general life, as you said, existence, is what makes this drama really intimate and 'real'. i keep watching and thinking it would be such a different drama had another director got ahold of it but thankfully in kws's masterful hands, it's seriously delicate and raw.

i haven't felt / seen the wanting to open up with jian and dong hoon tbh, so its interesting to see you have. dong hoon i think has been looking for an opportunity to open because he felt pity / curious  (ladybug conversation, buying her the tomatoes, looking after her when they got off the same subway station) but jian, other than odd glimpses of emotion (when he got shoved out of the train, when she put two and two together over the affair) i see nothing but her having seen his situation as a vehicle to alleviating her from hers.

exactly me too, i loved the way dialogue was used.

can't believe it's so brilliant. the ost is fantastic. the once scene where they played that song sung by the woman, the entire minute or however long it was accompanied with nothing but jian walking home, uninterrupted by conversation, uninterrupted by anything extraordinary, just her walking home. adored it

Yes I love these two songs

Can't wait for the official release

Same! Wasn't really a fan of the first one that was released lol.

I'm loving reading all of the positive reviews from strictly k-drama fans.

This is one of my favorites:

"Brilliant two opening episodes that drew me irrevocably in from the get go, finally bringing me back to Kdramaland after a long hiatus.

The bleak aesthetics framed by slightly off-kilter cinematography, pervading sense of desolation and desperation, interjected by the odd burst of hijinks - all build up a relentless introduction to the unforgiving universe it is set in. PD Kim Won Suk is in his element, and I know we are in excellent hands as far as direction goes.

The characters are beautifully brought to life by strong performances across the board. IU in particular, truly shines with her nuanced delivery, conveying so much with the minutest of reactions, a flicker of an eyelid, or just the gaze of dead, dead eyes of one who no longer allows herself to feel. Driven by pragmatism and tunnel vision born of her dire circumstances, to break free of the hell that she is living in, to find new life for her and her grandmother, she is currently ruthless and callous, bent on achieving her goal with no regard yet for the collateral damage she may leave in her wake. Her LJA has me aching for her inasmuch as I fear the lengths to which her desperation would take her. LSK is equally convincing as the hapless, bewildered PDH, trapped in drudgery out of responsibility towards his family - his vulnerability and helplessness keeping me in dread and having me root for him so badly, knowing that he will be beaten down even more down the road when his wife's infidelity and LJA's manipulations come to light. While in a better financial situation than LJA, he is perhaps even more an underdog, with far less-honed survival skills than her.

The dynamics of the Park siblings leaves me with mixed emotions. Their affection is clear for all to see, yet the current parasitic nature of their relationship frustrates me as they lay, albeit unintentionally, undue pressure on PDH to be the cornerstone of the family, without bothering to understand what difficulties he may be facing. It is clear that PDH himself takes on all expectations laid upon him without a dissenting word, but I have to wonder how long before even his stoic facade finally cracks.

LJA's relationship with her grandmother is one that moves me to tears. Her gruffness belie her love, and her very actions - springing out her grandmother, caring for her when she herself could barely survive - scream that love which she no longer has the capacity to express verbally. Where her grandmother is physically mute, LJA herself is now emotionally mute, fortifying herself with a hardened hide, so that she need not hurt more by feeling. Yet, the sad, compassionate eyes of her grandmother sees it all and aches for her grandchild, just as I hurt for this family who has no one else to rely on apart from a young gamer.

The office politics are a fascinating part of this story. I am particularly glad to see Shin Goo (aka Thank You's Mr. Lee!) as the Chairman, as well as Jung Hae Kyun from the Signal alumni here as the targeted Director PDW. The previews indicate that Director Park will be trapped by LJA, but I hope this will be a temporary setback in what is currently a thrilling standoff in the company. Either way, can't wait to see how this unfolds.

As for the arc which has been the source of so much mind-boggling controversy, I do not believe we have seen the last of our resident loan shark LGI. LJA is not out of the woods yet as far as he is concerned, and it is merely a matter of time before he finally tracks her down again, be it at her workplace or otherwise. It remains to be seen why he is particularly vindictive towards her and I wonder how she could ever extricate herself from his clutches. We shall see.

So far, this drama has hit every note and then some - be it direction, performances or script, and I am absolutely absolutely on board. May this winning streak continue without losing steam, giving us one of the most outstanding dramas of 2018, if not the most. Please let it be so."

that's how I watched it too. she didn't do it to help dong hoon but because her plan was backfiring, she really had no other option. i think this is why dong hoon's character is more pitiful, he must feel indebted to jian now, without knowing she would not have thought about him twice had it not been for the loan sharks realising it was stolen, wanting to report her for revenge, finding the envelope etc.

we have no backstory to the characters just yet, which is exciting but also makes speculation our only option. kwang il has it out for jian and i want to know why. there has to be something in their past which has made him go after her with such vengeance.

i also really like the caretaker. he's played brilliantly even though he's only had a few scenes. he knows about jian and im curious about them too.

i'm with sooj. I also don't get the feeling that JA wants to open up to any body. So far, in her cynical heart, my interpretation is that she only sees people as tools/ with the exception of a couple of allies (janitor and nerd friend) and gradma.

IU is doing such a brilliant job that I really don't feel the need to interpret beyond what she's showing.

To me, like sooj, the subway and the scene below are the only moment she felt kinda of pity towards DH:

I'm looking forward to see  what will take to break down her barriers. but sure enough wont be a couple of meals.

I've seen a couple of people complaining about the Wife too........ and I agree..............

in a cast when everyone is showing something outside of the kdrama cliche, she's playing the role that same way any other actor would in any weekend drama.... it just feels incredibly 2D in comparison.... rise up woman.

some people have made comments on this scene thinking it might have some truth to it and it linking to gwang il.

"what else have you killed?"

"a person"

it's incredibly far-fetched considering we have nothing to go on but interesting nonetheless

omg I didn't want to say this because so many people seem to be in love with him but everything about PDH is soooooo average. I don't see any charm there yet. I mean. I'm sure he has his sob story, and sure he's a nice guy but I'm yet to feel anything towards him.  it's just so......... average. it doesn't hurt the drama tho. He's just not my favourite.

the characters and plots I'm drawn to as of yet are

JA, GI, The company drama ( I surprisingly found that interesting) and dare I say, Director Park caught my attention too in the few scenes he had. He seems to be very cunning too. I really want to know how JA will play both the company and her debtor. also, the few seconds of the janitor had me wishing for a backstory.

same to both of you! i'm not in love with his character either ....... he's so non????? i think the drama lot are loving him only cos its lee sun gyun lets be real there's nothing charismatic or endearing about him *just* yet. im sure there's a lot more to him but he's purposefully boring having been dulled by life.

YES! i am so surprised over being into the company drama ..i do admit i did need recaps to follow it entirely with their being different sides and tbh zoning out over prejudice with company politics in kdrama but its very fun here. totally with you blue! director park was fantastic! especially in the scene where he had guessed every single move the other side had plotted against him with the 50 mill won. he's quiet but stern and calculating but in a smooth way. he's brilliant (despite his hair)

yessssss i need more im drying out of new content

aaaand the scene that kills me to this day

now i've had time to accept it .. i guess it's kind of a good thing they don't play lovers in this drama .. i mean its already been done twice so despite him being an awful human it allows them to explore new acting with each other

kkk

about Director Park, when I watched without subs, I was like 'ugh, so this is the other baddie' (maybe due to his stern face or hair? ) but When I had subs, my opinion on him shifted completely and although I'm sure JA will be successful in firing him, I really wish his time in the drama is not short.

His few scenes gave a lot of depth to the character, which I hope we see more of.

I think it's interesting how both sides want to fire each other and we just see one as the ''bad side'' because the CEO is cheating with PH's wife, but really, both sides are equally power hungry and want to achieve the same goal.

Watched the 2 episodes, I like how this drama is not taking anyone as a good or bad guy, even the Director wasn't trying to be nice to PDH just keeping him since he can help and it's the only connection to the one who is trying to take him off

Loved IU acting here, not only as a fan but this kind of character is something new on her, that's why it got my attention, especially at the end of the 2nd episode when she tried to be a new friend to PDH, but it's all a treat to get him fired

I didn't watch any of the "lines" here, anybody knows what is her relation with the young CEO? EDIT: Didn't notice, she stole the phone lol

The song of the train is really nice ohbi.png
