This episode was soooo fun! I laughed so much because of the brothers lol. We get to see how smart and badass Jian is in this episode and a glimpse of obsessive Gwang-il? I bet he's going to start being creepy af (I mean he wasn't /that/ creepy during the first ep imo). Also, ngl I almost cried during grandma's scene today ;~;

I'm officially hooked.

IU and JKY are hands down the scene stealers.

I loved the 2 brothers looking for JA at the subway hahahahaha

the only weak plot line for me , well the one I care the least and may be skipping in the future, is the wife's. she hasn't captivated me yet

I want more IU + grandma.

i'm glad it's looking like romance isn't a thing in this drama between jian and dong hoon but even if there was i really don't think it would be outlandish? she's not a child and he's not an oap i understand it's overused in dramas and films but from the set up him being the only kindness jian sees in her life does it seem so impossible erm nope?

it's funny how they're against the thought of her character having a romantic relationship with LSG but seem to have no problem with Ki Yong's character having a relationship with LJA even though Ki Yong and IU are only a year apart and LSG and LJA are both 43.

people are so used to kdramas with romance involved that slice of life dramas/dramas that actually depict real life are so foreign to them *sigh* not all dramas need to have love line or something @ netz ohpressor.png

Kiyong's character doesn't have an affair with Lee Jiah's character tho? It's Kim Youngmin's character who has an affair with her laugh.png Edit: But yeah kr twitter attacked the adultery topic during the first ep and were saying that people shouldn't watch the drama bc it's anti-feminist, it romanticizes dating violence, it has adultery, and "lolita" rolleyes.gif

I...where the hell are they seeing this "lolita" theme because I saw none of that, are they even watching the same drama we're talking about here???? Dong Hoon feels pity for Ji An and Ji An certainly doesn't see Dong Hoon in any sort of romantic way nor is she a little kid forced to dress and act like an adult for sexual purposes. Same with dating violence--like they're Korean, they can understand the drama without subs, yet I as an I-fan understood that Jang Kiyong's character and IU's character aren't even dating and that they have an enemy relationship better than them???

ratings are out!!

it increased!!

the impresive thing is that it increased even though it's against strong finale for 'return'!!!

we are at a really good start!

after the cliff hanger/ double edged sword  this episode, I can only predict better ratings next week!

Yup it was Return's finale this week so they did amazing. It's good that more people tuned in for ep 2 and I can't wait to see what's gonna happen next week. Subs for ep 2 are already out, off watching~~ Edited by HugeBoi Minos Wife

Was Dong Hoon indirectly trying to protect Ji An by not stating outright that he suspected her of stealing the envelope of money from his drawer?

I wonder what caused Ji An to have a change of heart and take back the 50 mil that she was going to use to pay off her debt once and for all...did she somehow find out about what went on in the phone convo between the loan shark she was with and Jang Kiyong's character?

Ji An's brother is so goddamn useless. I know he's young and most likely still in school but he seems to care more about playing what looks like an MMORPG than helping Ji An take care of their poor grandmother.

Dong Hoon's brothers annoy me so far.

edit: also they totally should've figured out another way of looking for Ji An at the subway entrance/exit instead of looking like middle-aged creeps to all the women exiting lmao

I got the sense that jian felt something was off and didn't trust the situation unfolding. our girl's got street smarts and good instincts!

these people obvs haven’t watched the drama and are just basing everything on vague character descriptions lmao probably also dragging it just because IU is involved *rolls eyes*

i think he was going to tell but when he was starting to do that, his superior told him about it being found in the trash?? lol also Kibeom isn’t her brother. He’s her friend. According to his character description, he does what Jian says since he feels indebted to her (she also pays for his debts huhu).

the director is bloody brilliant. also obsessed with the colour palette and the angles used. the scene where jky was making his way to jian at the start of the ep and they filmed his feet walking up the stairs cutting to joan's whereabouts was so effective. i have so much to say on this drama. going to rewatch and list my thoughts later.

can i just say i'm so impressed with iu i won't lie i really didn't think she could pull off her role as well as this. i look forward to her scenes more than anyone else and this is without bias. a comment on one the trans articles was talking about how they feel sadness even when she's not talking - simply when she's warming up food or helping her grandma and this exactly. i think the healing part of this drama will be great because they've shown the sad parts well. the drama isn't overly dark either tho? it's just realistic.

still at work. on a friday. at 5.15. logged in to spew a few thoughts after reading drambeans recap and comments.

going to post some extracts which i agree / disagree with here:

Mindy: "I don’t think some people realize how hard it is to pull off stoic characters. It’s very easy for them to be boring in the hands of the wrong actor and she has me engaged so far.

I feel like it’s rare to get a drama heroine like Ji-an. Most of dramaland’s poor, struggling heroines are plucky Candys. It’s a nice change to get such a stark, jaded character."

this is a really great point. it might not seem that masterful to walk around and talk quietly and act with no expression, but it's super easy to become boring with that and thankfully she's not boring

"Oh, and I don’t know what the sound mixers are doing with the voices, but I like it. Lee Sun-kyun is a given but IU’s voice also sounded cool in some scenes."

I noticed this too! it sounded like (especially iu's) voices were dubbed over some scenes .. did anyone else notice this?

"In a way I understand why people get triggered because of violent scenes like that and why knetz criticized them. There’s something that i-netz couldn’t quite grasp. There are too many dramas with scenes that inflict physical violence against female actresses and they are oftentimes very graphic and the perpetrators rarely face any consequences in dramas."

I don't agree with this. I think there are plenty of shows which "i-netz" watch that are western and depict scenes where the violence is gratuitous .. especially towards women. it isn't isolated to / or mainly a symptom of asian dramas. that's for certain. game of thrones is one of many many examples.

anyway, i understand the point on violence for violence sake but the scene i feel had a point? it led onto the sunglasses which allowed her to carry out the heist and also show her life as realistically as possible - indebted to a loan shark who clearly has it out for her. people go through shit and its common and it isnt pretty and life doesn't take into account if youre a woman.

... why people are jumping the gun and writing it off as sensationalism is beyond me. tv, i'm afraid is sensational at its core. i do understand the need for discussion because violence towards women in cinema is often excessive and unnecessary. but imo this was not the scene to pin our much needed activism to.

I should probably get back to work now .... more later

every time ji an appeared on my screen i was like

tumblr_p3qt8oI6SH1uo813ro8_540.jpg

ok, jokes aside

i can say that the second ep blew me away in a number of ways.

what i love about the way it is shot and played is the plethora of unspoken glances, sighs, movements.. a lot of hesitance. you can almost feel the internal contemplations, especially of ji an and dong hoon

the second thing that stroke me was the atmosphere every time ji an and dong hoon interacted with each other. it is such a weird thing to say but it felt so humane and genuine. you could almost feel like both of them were searching for signs to open up to someone, which they have not done before, so there's this feeling of cautious attempts on the part of both

i cannot wait to see how their detached selves will draw closer to each other, not in a romantic way obviously

i am talking nonsense but it resonated with me on many levels. their dialogues, although short, were very poignant. these were only small and sometimes abrupt sentences but you could tell that there was more to it. again, behind the automatized routines of daily reality, i could see them fumble for something meaningful

can i just say i'm so impressed with iu i won't lie i really didn't think she could pull off her role as well as this. i look forward to her scenes more than anyone else and this is without bias. a comment on one the trans articles was talking about how they feel sadness even when she's not talking - simply when she's warming up food or helping her grandma and this exactly. i think the healing part of this drama will be great because they've shown the sad parts well. the drama isn't overly dark either tho? it's just realistic.

this drama is very much about existence... and the way melancholic and comic moments are intertwined is very reminiscent of life

and, yes, iu has impressed me... quite often i caught myself thinking that she is somehow living the character rather than playing, you know

lmao. sorry. i'm falling asleep so i have no idea what i am writing. but just wanted to put it into words, even though so sloppily
