Hopefully it will be subbed by then.

It seems like it will be a DramaFever exclusive and sometimes they are slow with the subs.

Other sites that navigate without proper licenses might not have the subs right away too.

ah... if its dramafever exclusive then it will probably be a couple of days until the other sites get the episode...

then, I'll be watching and commenting on the weekend!

can't wait!!

i watched the drama raw and i really loved it.

the director is a master. he really deserves a shout out and all the love.

since the trailer, I had gotten 'girl with the dragon tattoo' vibes and that still kinda followed (for me) during this first episode.

Although the first episode has taken it's time to lay out the story line, it didn't feel slow. I actually love this pace, it feels like characters are going to be fully developed. I have hopes.

personal pointers:

Favourite scene: every Lee JiAn + Grandma moments

Scene stealer is definitely Jang Kiyong!!!!!!!

Sound track is superb

although it's not an excitable drama, I'm really curious about how the story will develop, how the characters will grow and what will happen next.

It's a really mature and realistic drama so I don't think it's for everyone, but after being soooo bored with the same old in kdrama for so long, this is exactly what I needed!!!

Misaeng is the last drama I truly enjoyed,  I can see this one taking it's place ^^

I'm officially hooked.

IU and JKY are hands down the scene stealers.

I loved the 2 brothers looking for JA at the subway hahahahaha

the only weak plot line for me , well the one I care the least and may be skipping in the future, is the wife's. she hasn't captivated me yet

I want more IU + grandma.

ratings are out!!

it increased!!

the impresive thing is that it increased even though it's against strong finale for 'return'!!!

we are at a really good start!

after the cliff hanger/ double edged sword  this episode, I can only predict better ratings next week!

still at work. on a friday. at 5.15. logged in to spew a few thoughts after reading drambeans recap and comments.

going to post some extracts which i agree / disagree with here:

Mindy: "I don’t think some people realize how hard it is to pull off stoic characters. It’s very easy for them to be boring in the hands of the wrong actor and she has me engaged so far.

I feel like it’s rare to get a drama heroine like Ji-an. Most of dramaland’s poor, struggling heroines are plucky Candys. It’s a nice change to get such a stark, jaded character."

this is a really great point. it might not seem that masterful to walk around and talk quietly and act with no expression, but it's super easy to become boring with that and thankfully she's not boring

"Oh, and I don’t know what the sound mixers are doing with the voices, but I like it. Lee Sun-kyun is a given but IU’s voice also sounded cool in some scenes."

I noticed this too! it sounded like (especially iu's) voices were dubbed over some scenes .. did anyone else notice this?

"In a way I understand why people get triggered because of violent scenes like that and why knetz criticized them. There’s something that i-netz couldn’t quite grasp. There are too many dramas with scenes that inflict physical violence against female actresses and they are oftentimes very graphic and the perpetrators rarely face any consequences in dramas."

I don't agree with this. I think there are plenty of shows which "i-netz" watch that are western and depict scenes where the violence is gratuitous .. especially towards women. it isn't isolated to / or mainly a symptom of asian dramas. that's for certain. game of thrones is one of many many examples.

anyway, i understand the point on violence for violence sake but the scene i feel had a point? it led onto the sunglasses which allowed her to carry out the heist and also show her life as realistically as possible - indebted to a loan shark who clearly has it out for her. people go through shit and its common and it isnt pretty and life doesn't take into account if youre a woman.

... why people are jumping the gun and writing it off as sensationalism is beyond me. tv, i'm afraid is sensational at its core. i do understand the need for discussion because violence towards women in cinema is often excessive and unnecessary. but imo this was not the scene to pin our much needed activism to.

I should probably get back to work now .... more later

bravo!!

very well written sooj!!!

every time ji an appeared on my screen i was like

tumblr_p3qt8oI6SH1uo813ro8_540.jpg

ok, jokes aside

i can say that the second ep blew me away in a number of ways.

what i love about the way it is shot and played is the plethora of unspoken glances, sighs, movements.. a lot of hesitance. you can almost feel the internal contemplations, especially of ji an and dong hoon

the second thing that stroke me was the atmosphere every time ji an and dong hoon interacted with each other. it is such a weird thing to say but it felt so humane and genuine. you could almost feel like both of them were searching for signs to open up to someone, which they have not done before, so there's this feeling of cautious attempts on the part of both

i cannot wait to see how their detached selves will draw closer to each other, not in a romantic way obviously

i am talking nonsense but it resonated with me on many levels. their dialogues, although short, were very poignant. these were only small and sometimes abrupt sentences but you could tell that there was more to it. again, behind the automatized routines of daily reality, i could see them fumble for something meaningful

this drama is very much about existence... and the way melancholic and comic moments are intertwined is very reminiscent of life

and, yes, iu has impressed me... quite often i caught myself thinking that she is somehow living the character rather than playing, you know

lmao. sorry. i'm falling asleep so i have no idea what i am writing. but just wanted to put it into words, even though so sloppily

*clap clap*

thanks for sharing your thoughts.

go to sleep baby baby.

here's dramabeans recap for ep 2:

http://www.dramabeans.com/2018/03/my-ajusshi-episode-2/

^ there are a lot of discussion going on in the comments, everybody seems to be enjoying the drama!!

but there seems to be confusion as to why LJA gave the money back?

To my understanding, she didn't do it to help DH out, that was just one of many possible outcome. To me, she only returned it because she couldn't keep it.

Her plan to pay off her debt failed because of GI's grudge so the LoanSharks were going to report the money as stolen and get her sent to prison and at the same DH was too suspicious of her and this situation would only get her involved with the police either way, (had she been able to pay her debt as she originally planned, she'd just keep the remaining money and say bye to her job, but I guess she can't afford to do that either at the moment).

So, I took it as the best thing to do was to have to come out with a better plan, which she did.

She has to find a way to have the loan sharks accept her debt payment without implicating her.. but I think this story is not going to be that simple and tbh, this is the plot line I'm interested the most atm.

drama fans are also really rooting for a love line already. it's not that I'm against it at this stage, I just don't think it's needed. There will be too many interesting plot line lost just to set up and give time to a love line which would in turn just fall into the 'same old' category.

That scenario is just not interesting for me.

At the moment I'm way too invested in JA already that the only kind of healing she needs is money, and with that she can move with her grandma to Jeju island and burn everything she left behind to the ground. datassplz.png

i'm with sooj. I also don't get the feeling that JA wants to open up to any body. So far, in her cynical heart, my interpretation is that she only sees people as tools/ with the exception of a couple of allies (janitor and nerd friend) and gradma.

IU is doing such a brilliant job that I really don't feel the need to interpret beyond what she's showing.

To me, like sooj, the subway and the scene below are the only moment she felt kinda of pity towards DH:

I'm looking forward to see  what will take to break down her barriers. but sure enough wont be a couple of meals.

I've seen a couple of people complaining about the Wife too........ and I agree..............

in a cast when everyone is showing something outside of the kdrama cliche, she's playing the role that same way any other actor would in any weekend drama.... it just feels incredibly 2D in comparison.... rise up woman.

same to both of you! i'm not in love with his character either ....... he's so non????? i think the drama lot are loving him only cos its lee sun gyun lets be real there's nothing charismatic or endearing about him *just* yet. im sure there's a lot more to him but he's purposefully boring having been dulled by life.

YES! i am so surprised over being into the company drama ..i do admit i did need recaps to follow it entirely with their being different sides and tbh zoning out over prejudice with company politics in kdrama but its very fun here. totally with you blue! director park was fantastic! especially in the scene where he had guessed every single move the other side had plotted against him with the 50 mill won. he's quiet but stern and calculating but in a smooth way. he's brilliant (despite his hair)

yessssss i need more im drying out of new content

kkk

about Director Park, when I watched without subs, I was like 'ugh, so this is the other baddie' (maybe due to his stern face or hair? ) but When I had subs, my opinion on him shifted completely and although I'm sure JA will be successful in firing him, I really wish his time in the drama is not short.

His few scenes gave a lot of depth to the character, which I hope we see more of.

I think it's interesting how both sides want to fire each other and we just see one as the ''bad side'' because the CEO is cheating with PH's wife, but really, both sides are equally power hungry and want to achieve the same goal.

Although I haven't watched, I've seen the spoilers kk

can I say that this is what I thought she'd do. I thought she'd use their dinner 'dates' to start a rumour.

My guess right now is that although JA sees DH as a tool (and fool) atm, she'll have a change of heart because despite being betrayed by her, he wont give up on her.

this is what my writer intuition says.

.......... I'm not a writer but that's besides the point.

It's killing me that I haven't watched eps 3 and 4 yet!!

I've seen spoilers here and there but I've kept myself away from the biggest part, I guess I'll have the pleasure to watch it with subs without any preconceived ideas.

wont lie first ep had me thinking ratings would be a lot higher but its still steady ..

I'm surprised by the drop. I hope it picks up again. It would be sooooooo great if it maintains 4% up

5% is a certified hit.

also, I won't lie to you Sooj. I've been very jealous of you.... You've had your ship working together 3 times already and

even your side ships like IUxOh Hyuk have often collaborated, while I......... I've been waiting for 5 years .... rlytearpls.png

BUT ugh.

this:

their freaking chemistry!!!

I have no choice but to wish that they work together again in a more... romantic scenario. hurrplz.png

Yeah seems like they're really rushing to get the winter scenes done with :(

I really hope they do! And I also wish they would guest on a variety or talk show.. or at least a photoshoot. This drama feels so under-promoted aside from tvN twitter (probs this is just me wanting more lol)?

Like there were even some comments wondering why My Mister articles were not featured on Naver's main page (Idk if this true or not).

I think the story will get brighter as the seasons get warmer.

even the coloration of the drama gets warmer by episode.

I'm doing this write up as tears still freshly rolling down on my cheeks rlytearpls.png

EP 3 and 4 were soo good. The story is getting so emotionally involving, it's beautiful .

I have a couple of points I'd like to put forth.

-  Firstly, I read that many people didn't 'buy' the elevator scene from ep 2 when Ji An got the phone out of the CEO's pocket. I saw that as simply an opportunity. To me, Ji An probably sought work in a big company for opportunities like that in the first place. She had to show the CEO how cunning she was so he had no option but to hire her. That was also the  precise moment  she picked 'team CEO' to work for.

She knew both Director Park and CEO were in an awkward relationship due to the bribing situation and here was the CEO carrying 2 phones in his pocket, which would increase Director Park's suspicion even more had she not pretended the phone was hers. From that moment on, she had the CEO at her arms length as he couldn't simply turn around and ask for his extra (2G) phone back in the presence of the Director. The fact she found out about the affair is just a convenient plot device.

Our heroine is an opportunist who'd never let chances pass by. Plus she explained her reasoning to the CEO during their one - one so idk why so many people were still confused about that scene..... a character like JiAn (or any detective /agent/ criminal) has to always stay one step ahead from the spectators otherwise it just dumbs the character down.

I think the writer  and director are doing a brilliant job in picking out necessary scenes to create a structured narrative... ofc there are fiction and reaching as it's fiction.

-  I found it funny how all the higher ups sulk up to the President but they are all just waiting for him to die.

-  I still find the characterisation of the wife really wish-washy. The CEO on the other hand is fantastically unlikable! I love (and hate ) his stuck up expression, his air of arrogance but just a hint of nervousness. This actor is also fantastic.

-  Also, I'm finally happy to see that DH is not as passive as I thought. I can understand why he chooses to stay out of conflicts. This tells me that he may know much more about his wife's affair than he wants to admit. I'm curious to know the reason why they don't divorce and how the son will fit here. I'm starting to see DH's charms.

-  I find the mundane bantters so charming, the drama becomes really much more rich without skipping any scenes.

-  I also thought that Ji An perhaps allows herself to get bullied by GI out self-hatred/ guilt. He's her guilty conscience.

random comments:

I wonder how long it will be until JiAn gets gifted a new NB running shoes hahah

It crossed my mind that Janitor is perhaps JiAn's father?? maybe?

but he keeps his profile low due to debt/ protect family or himself / idk.

Also, the stan in me couldn't stop laughing when it said that JiAn's hobby is 'running' when IU's like this :

chuplz.png

Also, the stan in me can't stop drawing parallel between IU's love for her grandma and Jian's love for hers .

gosh, I love this drama.

1. I think so too. they've skilfully managed to let you in enough to follow the story but kept a lot hidden to keep things interesting and open-ended. there's a lot that is unspoken but for particular reasons .. especially in dong hoon. he was and still is to some degree, passive .. but does he know about his wife? you get glimpses that he might know .. a telling look when the wife of the older brother comes to give divorce papers .. when jian and park dong woon ask him why the CEO has it out for him; he denies but something in his demeanour shows he knows .. maybe not the affair exactly but he knows something ..

2. the wife is a terrible cast. that's all I have to say. I wonder why the CEO didn't want to talk about his ex though. I don't feel too much over director yoon's acting either.

3. dong hoon was really great these past two episodes. you've said it all really but yh

4.  !!!! this! i thought the brothers were really annoying mostly cos I would half skip scenes when watching without subs but they're a good relief to jian's story. I don't find them that comedic yet which is a shame because that's what was promised through teasers and i'm not in love with their story yet though and i think that's because they're slightly unlikable at this stage. they are an essential part though and i do like where it's going for them. i guess i was just expecting something different.

5. mmm i agree about her guilty conscience. it was evident possibly when her friend said how she's not the type to get a beating so why did she let it happen and her expression when her grandma asked her if that guy had hit her and she said "she killed that man remember"

about the brothers...... Honestly, as you know, I have absolutely no interest in the struggles of the middle aged men. BUT, it just occur to me as I was watching ep 4 how real, and actually serious, that struggle is...

We have a family friend who has gone through pretty much the same thing the 3 brothers have gone through (and I can even use the example of my uncle too.. ).

He's linguist and used to work in translations, notary, documents.. idk, he had a serious and good job until he got into a one night with  secretary/or assistant when on a business trip. Within a year he got fired and divorced. Due to his age he couldn't really find jobs in the same area.. Now he drives a car very much similar to the one the Elder brother acquired, to sell flowers. He has a flower business.

So although mundane and not really funny (as it could be for a drama) I developed attachment to that story line because, it's actually what our parents or their friends may be going through.... ?  the middle age blues.

is he not able to do freelance translations? I know there are a lot of translators who go freelance instead of working in-house

tbh, I don't what kinda of jobs he was looking for or how competitive his field is. I know that he's a specialist in Hispanic languages and dialects (so basically spanish) which I'd assume there would be a lot of people trying for the same thing?

I know that (from an outsiders pov) the most difficult part, really, was the slump he went through from the divorce, mainly because of his children.

anyone have guesses about PDH's child??

I thought just now that he could be have a disability such as hearing or speech impediment hence why he's studying in the US??

it's too cruel to send a 12 year old kid away, by himself. ..

So will Jian double-cross the CEO in the end? lol Poor Jian must feel so conflicted rn since she needs the money but she also wants to help Donghoon. :( Also, that last scene tho! Yasss Donghoon boi finally woke up!!

FINALLY!!

I want to see him flip a table at least once more!! it's hard to root for a passive goody two-shoes.

not gonna lie, I cried at every grandma scene.
