She keeps on staring at the world outside the window, as the day slowly makes way for the night. The full, grey clouds open up and shower the streets and accidental pedestrians with a wet curtain. Raindrops start falling down the glassy surface, creating split-second images as she traces them with her finger.

 

Once again she wonders, why does loneliness overcome her so easily? She thought that she needed a break from busy schedule but now that she's got some free time, her mind is full of unwanted thoughts. Old memories flood her vision and she starts to drift off into this odd half conscious state, when all of a sudden she hears the front door of the dorm open with a loud thud.

 

"Taeyeonnie! Are you sleeping? I bought some pizza!" a cheerful voice calls from the hall. 

 

Taeyeon snaps out of her reverie and her eyes catch a curious sight outside. Even though it's still raining, the clouds part a little to let out a single ray of sunshine. The world gets instantly brighter and a small smile creeps onto her face. But then, how could it not stop raining when her own sunshine is here? 

 

Painful thoughts forgotten, Taeyeon stands up and stretches her arms as she's putting on her slippers, and starts walking out of her room.

 

"I'm coming, Sunny-ya! Don't eat everything alone!"

 

 

Description: I wrote a short story about the friendship between Taeyeon and Sunny. I got inspired as one day I was watching Sun shining through the rainy clouds. I used a metaphor of rain and sunshine being so different but at the same time both being a weather condition that can exist and appear in the sky at the same time, referring to the girls' personalities. Chan, at twenty years old, knew that he wasn’t capable of leading a team perfectly, he didn’t trust in his abilities that much. However, he definitely did not expect to have messed up as badly as he did.

Seven years ago, Chan’ mother opened one letter, and then the young boy found himself on the other side of an ocean in Seoul. An entertainment company, one that he was not yet familiar with, had decided that they desperately needed to pluck a prepubescent Korean-Australian kid from his family and insert him into a new boy group. Yet after seven years, a band, boy group, two girl groups and countless soloists, Chan was still in the dungeon, waiting impatiently for his debut.

At some point in year seven, Chan decided that enough was enough, and took matters into his own hands. If the company wasn’t going to give him a group, then he would make one himself. Among the many hopefuls in the company, he found only eight who were willing to join him in his conquest. Most objected, saying that it was against the rules, but Chan knew very well, there was no rule about that. He wasn’t a rule-breaker.

Over the seven months they spent together as a team, they grew closer, finally got noticed, and watched another artist debut. While none of the nine members would ever admit that they had their favorite teammate, it was quite obvious to anyone that this was the case. For Chan, this was Felix. Chan didn’t know exactly why he became so close to the younger bo; maybe it was because he saw himself in him.

When the team was created, Felix had just moved from Sydney one month prior, and spoke about fifty words of Korean. Just two months later, with some help from the others, he was the most talkative person they had ever met, and sometimes Chan wished Felix had never learnt Korean (he would never admit that though). Aside from the occasional slip-up, Felix had become good enough at Korean to survive on his own, and the directors of the company soon started taking a closer look at their team.

Maybe being ignored was for the best, Chan thought, when the company threw them into a new survival show. The director had said that either they all debut, or none of them. They were all uncomfortable under the constant stare of the cameras, and suddenly, privacy didn’t exist anymore.

Minho, a dance prodigy who had been a backup dancer for multiple artists, was the first to be eliminated. Chan felt betrayed. Nine or none, they said, yet they go back on their words? But he also felt responsible in some way. “If only I had pushed him harder, maybe it wouldn’t have ended like this.†The thoughts raced through his head, while he just waited to hear, it’s just a joke.

There was no joke. The company confiscated their phones, deleted Minho’s number, and decided that there would be a new rule.

“You are not allowed to talk to or contact the eliminated trainees. They will have to move back home and cut ties.â€

It wasn’t fair, Chan knew that, but he was too scared to fight back, to lose what he wasted seven years waiting for. So he tried to get everyone back into the normal swing of things, hoping that they could recover from their loss.

For those who had not yet turned eighteen, which was over half of the group, the rule was that one must be back in the dorms by midnight. One day though, it reached one in the morning, and Chan noticed Felix’s absence. There was only one place where he would be at this time, and so Chan donned his coat and headed out into the cold, bleak winter night.

The dance studio reeked of sweat as always, and the wooden floors had acquired a variety of stains (there was no way to tell the difference to tell the difference between a stain from ketchup, gochujang, or blood, but the majority were definitely blood.) As expected, the younger member was still there, dancing as if his life depended on it, and Chan remembered, not for the first time, exactly how dedicated and hardworking Felix was. Chan turned off the music.

“How long have you been here, Felix?†Chan laughed, but there was no warmth or humor in the laugh — Felix knew that Chan wasn’t joking. “You need to get some sleep.â€

“Sorry.â€

Sorry. That single word echoed in Chan’s mind when the directors met with them again.

“Felix, you’ve been eliminated.â€

And then time seemed to slow down. The directors left, and all the strength they had been mustering up violently collapsed.

“I’ll always be there, okay? I’m not going to leave you behind.†Chan had cried to Felix, and then decided that, no, that was not an empty statement. He was not going to leave him, or anyone behind. Maybe, just for once, he could break the rules.

While Chan wasn’t allowed to talk to Minho, Minho’s mother was not off limits, and so Chan found himself begging her to help him. It wasn’t right, he argued, that the company could go back on their word like that, and he knew that he could convince the company to bring Felix and Minho back. Felix just needed somewhere to stay, until he could fix the situation.

“Chan-ya, darling, I know you want the best for them, but you’re putting too much pressure on yourself.†Mrs. Lee, Minho’s mother, had always acted as his mother in Seoul, so he knew, from the moment she started speaking, there was no way that she would approve of his almost insane plan. She paused. “But fine. I’ll help you. Just don’t get carried away.â€

“Thanks, mom!†He beamed, and the others gave him a strange look. “Love you!â€

Chan decided that he had a talent in bending the rules. Since Felix had nowhere to go yet, he still lived with the others in the dorms. All the flights were full, and so Felix was just waiting for the company to come and ship him off. The young boy was sat on his bed all alone, when Chan barged in and ripped the boy’s phone out of his hands.

“Hey! Chan, what are you doing?†Felix grasped at the elder’s hands, but could not reach the phone, and so with a defeated “Hmph!â€, collapsed back onto the bed. Chan scribbled something onto his hand, and then exited stage left.

Chan wasn’t sure what he was expecting to hear down the other line. Maybe Felix’s sisters in the background, or the honking of cars. Yet he heard none of that, but instead a comfortingly familiar Australian accent, “Hello?â€

Felix’s father, thank whoever, approved completely of the crazy plan that Chan had, and Chan could safely say that everything was going to plan. (Except for the fact that he had to break the rules twice, but that could be excused, right?)

Chan realised that his efforts were completely wasted when the directors came to talk to him. “You’ll be debuting as nine in the new year.†He celebrated, happy that everything would work out, but a small question lingered in the back of his mind. Why did they have to eliminate Felix and Minho?

“It was to increase ratings,†they replied, and Chan felt disgust rising up in him. A child’s happiness, sacrificed for ratings? What kind of sick, twisted industry was this? But it didn’t matter anymore, he tried to believe. It all worked out well in the end.

The group made their debut not long after New Year’s Day, under the name “Stray Kidsâ€, a name that Chan thought, perfectly represented their team. And as they performed on the public stage for the first time and the cheers of the crowd nearly drowned out their singing, he thought, “Maybe I am capable of leading a team after all.

(His rule breaking did not go unpunished though. The company said that although they admired his loyalty and dedication, rules were still rules, and he would be on cleaning duty for the next two months. Chan didn’t really mind though, except for the times when he realised that cleaning up after eight other boys was that much harder than cleaning up after six. “I did bring it on myselfâ€, he sighed then gritted his teeth and reluctantly began washing the dishes.)

While Chan was from Vienna, Felix’s family came from a rural part of Switzerland, so he wasn’t exactly sure what to expect when he called. Maybe a cow or two mooing, or an Alpenhorn blowing in the distance.

He did not, however, expect to be confused. “Hello?â€, he asked, wondering if he had actually dialled the right number.

There was a man speaking, but he couldn’t exactly tell what it was. It wasn’t French, like he first thought, as he knew enough basic French to know that what the man was saying was not “Bonjour.â€

“Oh, I’m sorry, I think I have the wrong number.†He prepared to hang up, but then heard someone in the background asking, “Have you heard from Felix?â€

His conversation with Felix’s father went well, once he realised that, A. In Switzerland they speak Swiss German, a completely different dialect, and B. There were no cows around. Everything was going to plan. (Except for the fact that he had to break the rules twice, but that could be excused, right?)

Description: This piece of Stray Kids fan fiction was written by hand in my mock English Language IGCSE, in about an hour and a half, and the first thing to mention is definitely, how did my hand not fall off? On paper, it ended up being about 6.5 sides of paper, and about 1500 words, over 1000 over the word limit! Oops! I ended up getting a bad mark for it, mainly because of the excessiveness of the story. One of the comments that I got from my teacher was that I had written a novel!

 

The version that is posted is edited, and a small portion has been replaced. In the version written in the exam, Chan was Austrian and Felix was Swiss, so I had to remove two paragraphs in this version. If you want to read the original paragraphs (which I prefer, but sadly do not fully fit in), I will also put them at the bottom, and asterisk the paragraphs it will replace. 

 

The prompt in our exam was: “Write a story about breaking a rule,†and this was written a few days after Felix’s elimination, before any news of his return came out, so in my emotional turmoil I wrote about Chan breaking rules to make the company bring Felix and Minho back. It’s not exactly canon compliant, but I did the best I could to think about trainee life and represent it as best I could. It’s not the best story, but it’s one of my favorites, simply because of the situation it was written in. I hope you enjoy!

EXO's

, which contained pictures and "proof" that 

EXO are beings who have been around for decades (since the 1940s) and seen around the Globe, there are records containing investigations of their species (still: unknown) and their arrival on Earth has been predicted since ancient times. I used this theory of mine as the foundation of the fic. Essentially, this is an ORIGIN fic. People make fun of EXO's alien/superhero concept, but that is one of the things I love about this group. The sheer planning, minuscule details, parallels, and back story for EXO is a world of its own, intriguing and fascinating. In my mini "book" I incorporated pictures alongside the words, which are ALL screenshots, picked carefully from this same VCR, to show just how MINDBLOWING the concept is. I also threw allusions to their multiple comebacks, because YES, all their comebacks are connected somehow to an overarching theory and if that isn't amazing I don't know what is. What does the moon, wolves howling, "The War," monsters, laboratories in Lucky One, the Red Force in Mama, and more have in common. EXO!

 

Side note: although this would technically be fantasy, I tried to stay true to their personalities and even though EXO aren't technically superheroes, the actions they take in real life to for example support comfort women, donate to charities for global warming, help people with their kindness and generosity...they are shadows of the actions the EXO in this story take and are no less heroic. 

 

 

 

SUMMARY: In 1939, a lone old man follows a shooting comet only to find a boy floating in the middle of the Dead Sea; a boy who can control all lights in the world with a flick of his hand, a boy who claims that he arrived from another planet, a boy who claims that the Red Force is here to make Earth their bloody playground. Narrating the events of World War Two from the eyes of an old man who the world believes is senile, but who has seen the truth of nine out-of-this-world beings and their plight against the Eye to save a foreign planet. This is the story of the Nine, the heroes whose tales were never told, the miracles no human could comprehend. This is the story that began the history of the EXO we know today. 

 

 

A few details I forgot to clear up!

 

 

 

I forgot to add a few clarifications and points to understand the narrative for non exo-l readers/judges:

If you don’t look carefully, you might not be able to see, but all the pictures around the world DO show at least one EXO member. In the fic, I mention the city or country they are in and that was done through analyzing those 2 second screenshots, researching, and trying to figure out where they were in World War 2 by landmarks and vague names. Just a comment towards the accuracy in the fic in line with VCR, the plot is not based on just my whims but minuscule details.

 

Also, non exo readers might not understand the “titles†I give the members since no one’s names are mentioned until the very end. The “aqua master†is Suho, the “Fire Bearer†is Chanyeol, the “Wind Ravager†is Sehun, the “Frost Breather†is Xiumin and so on. They are based on their respective “powers†in the official EXO canon.

The bigger the ship the better

 

Kim Lip and Chuu approched a calm Haseul who sat alone in the living room, phone in hand.

“Whatcha doin mom?†said Lip teasing her.

Chuu's hand flew to her mouth immediately, trying to let the smile forming on her lips stay just to her.

Haseul rolled her eyes without taking her gaze away from the phone. She was accustomed to their antics by now. The majority of the fans seemed to think she acted like she was the mom of the group and when the other members found out about it they thought it would be funny to keep calling her that way just to tease her.

“Reading comments...†She murmured, adjusting her glasses.

Chuu and Lip threw themselves each to a side of where she was sitting, pushing themselves over her shoulders to spy.

“2Jin?â€, read Chuu aloud “Is that a ship?†Lip made an affirmative noise “Woah, fans are quick. What members? We have like four members with Jin on their nameâ€

“Heejinie and Hyunjinie†said Haseul, scrolling down on Twitter.

“Well, they were the first two members, the fans created the name before they found out there were more Jin girls. They must have felt so betrayed when Yeojinie debuted, poor creatures†said Lip, cracking up imagining their faces.

Haseul let a smile creep.

“What ship the most popular though?†wondered Chuu to herself.

Haseul looked away from her phone for the first time. Lip hummed grabbing her chin in an exagerated 'I'm thinking' look.

“YeoSeul obviously†said Haseul nodding with her the extensibly meme-ed mother smile. Chuu bit her lip to prevent another laugh from escaping. She found Haseul really funny when she smiled like that. She could totally see why the fans thought she looked like a mom.

“Ehhh†Lip pushed Haseul playfully “Good joke unnie, we all know the best ship is clearly LipSoul, fans love usâ€

“LipSoul what?†said Choerry closing the door behind her with a bigass smile “Unnies, what are you talking about?†Jinsoul, Vivi and Yves approached them with the food they went out to buy not long ago.

“Are you talking about pairings?†said Yves smiling at them like they were children. Jinsoul and her sat across the couch where the other three were.

“Unnie thinks the most popular ship is YeoSeul†said Chuu throwing her arm around Haseul shoulders. “A strong contender for sure†she said nodding with a derpy face.

“The comments under “new†MV say other thing†teased Vivi smiling.

Yves stopped midway into passing the food boxes to let out a squeak that they identified as a laugh and Jinsoul burried herself on her hands, half embarrased half laughing. Choerry smiled brightly again sitting with Vivi, on the small couch that gave the back to the door.

“Oh right!†Chuu propelled herself up. All the girls looked intensely at her ready to laugh because Kim Jiwoo was the definition of a walking meme “Fans loved YVi when “new†dropped but I was reading the comments under “Heart Attack†yesterday and...†she made a dramatic pause “YVi is dead, the new best ship is YveChuu, case closedâ€

“True†said Yves simply giving her a high five. YVi or YveChuu, doesn't really mattered. The important thing was she was in both.

“If we're going by what the comments say then the most popular ship is Chuuerry†Intervined Choerry with furrowed eyebrows and a pouty look. The food in the bags, now forgotten and getting cold. The most important thing at the moment was to decide whose ship was the most popular. More so, whose girls were involved in it. It was a matter of pride now.

“YeoSeul is shipped by everyone guys, there's no use in fighting†said Haseul shrugging her shoulders.

“But you don't have a bunch of youtube videos like LipSoul†said Jinsoul playing too.

 

“Oh? Wanna bet I can find more comments of people liking YeoSeul?†asked Haseul all smiles pulling her phone out.

Vivi opened her mouth ready to diss someone again but the door opened gathering everyones attention, everyone except Haseul who was way too bussy trying to prove Jinsoul wrong.

Heejin, Hyunjin and Yeojin (who was on her school uniform) entered.

“Guys!†said Kim Lip to the three as soon as their feet touched the floor of the room “Quick, whose ship is the most popular among fans, it's LipSoul right?â€

“YeoSeul!†half screamed Yeojin jumping on her place, throwing a fist to the air. Haseul nodded at the sound of that without lifting her gaze.

“Are you crazy? The best ship is obviously the original LOONA ship, 2Jin†dropped Hyunjin with a straight face getting close enough to steal a food box “The best ship obviously have to have the best member, me, the almighty Hyunjin. Ah, and then there's this peasant†she pointed at her side at Heejin who in response pouted at the insult. The younger pulled her by cheeks “Well, at least she's cuteâ€

 

Haseul stood up suddenly. All the eyes went to her. She took her glasses off and rubbed her eyes with the back of her hand.

 

“Unnie what happened?†Yeojin got close to her, with a worried look.

 

“I searched a video about our pairings to see what ship fans talked more about but I read something on the comments†she sobbed loudly and Yeojin side hugged her “Can you read it for me? I can't see wellâ€

 

Lip and Chuu stood up too and hugged Haseul while Yeojin read.

 

“I like HyunVi a lot but if I had to choose a favorite pairing it would surely be OT12. I don't know who are the restant 4 girls but I already love them. I've followed LOONA since Hyunjin MV “Around you†dropped and I've loved every girl since their blur days. LOONA OT12 hwaiting! I'm anticipating the debut of the full group, can't wait to see them all interacting!â€

 

By the end of the comment not only Haseul and Yeojin but all of them were tearing up. The rest of the girls got up and all of them hugged each other, transformed into a ball of tears and snot. It didn't mattered really what ship was the most popular, it didn't mattered either what member was the most popular. The only thing important was that they were a family. LOONA and the fans were a family. A family awaiting the debut to finally be reunited.
