Article: CL "I'm worried over whether I'll be able to get married because of my gold teeth in the MV" (Interview)

Source: Newsen via Nate

1. [+160, -24] The song's weird... isn't it? Or am I going crazy? Am I falling behind on the trends...

2. [+133, -11] If it's real gold, you can get married~ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹ (joking)

3. [+95, -12] Even if you can't get married... It won't be because of those gold teeth...

4. [+18, -8] Those gold teeth won't be the reason you can't get married... I trust you know the real reason why...

5. [+13, -8] A lot of people think her song is weird but this is my personal opinion. When you look at the American music market, there's music like Jason Mraz's and Nicki Minaj's.. Basically a variety of genres that are well loved whether it's commercial or not. Our country's music is pretty restricted in terms of what the public likes. It's either ballad or Dynamic Duo style hip hop. Any other genre and the song is considered weird. Korea still has a long way to go in terms of advancing our music industry. I can't honestly say that CL's music is high tier in terms of musicality but I have to give it to her for trying something new and different while still keeping it commercial. It's extremely charming.

TENASIA INTERVIEW - CL

“Wow really? Our song ‘Ugly’ does contain a lot of rock-genre elements to it,†CL said when told that rock musicians like 2NE1 in particular. This may be similar to how En Vogue, one of the most popular female groups of the 1990s, gained much support from rock musicians in particular with songs like “Free Your Mind†that portrayed strong women. From the moment since their debut, 2NE1 has been nothing like the girl groups that try to be cute and pretty. And if you were someone that has witnessed 2NE1′s energetic live performances, easily on a different level from other groups, you would agree further. Leader CL in particular has given performances where it seems as if she will suck in the audience. Most recently, she took up the challenge as rapper through her solo song “The Baddest Song.†Below are her responses from an interview with several media outlets on Monday.

Q. Tell us what it’s like to release your first solo album. You joined YG when you were 15 with the dream of becoming a rapper so you’ve achieved that dream in seven years.

CL: I put my heart into “The Baddest Female†and it’s my baby, very special to me. I’m also really happy to come out (with my solo album) at my age. I wrote various lyrics and put out my opinion regarding the songs, clothes, and music video. So a lot of me has been projected into this album. It’s very meaningful to me because I think it’ll be a point of my life I’ll remember even later on.

Q. How did you want to describe yourself to people through this album?

CL: I expressed the things I like and think are cool because I thought that I’d be able to get across who I am as long as I just stay true to myself.

Q. The CL in “The Baddest Female†is very fierce. What are you so angry about?

CL: â€The Baddest Female†contains the determined side of CL. And I separate my life into that of CL’s and Chaelin’s. To put it to you in the most extreme way, there is a black and white inside me with the black as CL and the white as Chaelin. I always want to be CL on stage but hope that my family and friends will see me as Chaelin.

Q. You pulled off a variety of concepts – from male to sexy – in the music video. You even wore gold teeth.

CL: The gold teeth are grills and a lot of hip-hop rappers wear them. I thought it’d be cool for me to try them out too. I was worried that I might not be able to get married later on but I just did anyway to stay true to who I am as CL. The rest felt natural for me because I’m used to wearing extreme clothes as a member of 2NE1.

Q. The energy that 2NE1′s performances give off are different from that of other girl groups. Even your live performances are overpowering. Are you usually different from how you are on stage?

CL: I’m very different on and off stage. I think I usually save up my energy for our performances. People say I look like the type that’ll go clubbing everyday and be a good drinker but I actually don’t like going out. I’ve been like that since I was young. Even after joining YG, I just like talking to Teddy or my friends about music. Other than that, I like to cook at home. And I cook rice in cast iron pots because the rice turns out much more moist and shiny.

Q. But we also get to see the very fashionable side to you when you occasionally go to fashion shows with G-Dragon.

CL: I usually don’t even wear make-up. But I love to wear clothes. I think of them as pieces of art. I respect designers.

Q. You wrote the lyrics to “The Baddest Female.†Some say that lyrics to the song aren’t as strong as the title suggests. For example, you say ‘Smiling with the eyes are a basic necessity, my weapon is my tears’ yet this would probably be more of what a foxy female, rather than a bad female, would say. What’s your definition of a ‘bad female’?

CL: The ‘baddest’ in “The Baddest Female†means ‘cool.’ The title comes from word play that Teddy and I were doing last year. I once rapped on stage, when the guys of our agency were performing, before my debut. And Perry wrote some lyrics for me then, with the phrase ‘The Baddest Female’ in it. I liked it so much that I used it as my signature autograph from then on. And then last year, Teddy said in passing that it might be fun if I rapped about it so we actually made the song early this year. We finalized on it because our CEO heard the song later and said it’s a song that suits me.

Q. Well the music industry is full of bad people right now, including Lee Hyori.

CL: Ever since I was a member of 2NE1, I’ve wanted to break the image of Asian women being passive and shy. And I’d had those thoughts ever since I went to international school when I was young. That’s why I think we came to sing a lot of strong songs that speak on behalf of women. I’m glad that a lot of women now sing songs with such messages.

Q. You’ve been to a lot of countries since you were young because of your father. So you must’ve experienced the perspective people have of Asian women first-handedly.

CL: When I met designer Jeremy Scott, he said he’d never seen an Asian woman dress like me before. Even when there are so many women in Korea that enjoy wearing hip-hop and other types of fashion. I was surprised that there are still people that see Asian women as being passive.

Q. You recently performed with Snoop Dog who is considered the god of the West Coast. Had you listened to a lot of music by legendary hip-hop artists since you were young, because your dream has been to become a rapper as well?

CL: I listened to The Fugees a lot when I was young because my father liked them. And he also really likes Lauryn Hill’s music. He has a hip-hop mindset. I also listened to a wide range of genres because he liked rock music. My dad doesn’t even wear a lot of suits. He usually likes to wear jeans and sneakers. After listening to “The Baddest Female,†he wrote “The Baddest Daughter†on his Twitter account. It’s so reassuring and I thank him for it.

Q. “The Baddest Female†is a slow song. Weren’t you worried the song might not seem full enough if you went on stage alone with a song like this?

CL: I didn’t think that. I’ve probably listened to this song several thousands of times by now but it’s so much fun and I still love it. It suits me. And it makes me proud to see the other members of my group hum the song. My boss calls me ‘sister’ and even the members of Big Bang call me the ‘queen bee.’ (laughs)

Q. Well just based on those lyrics, a guy may be scared of you. Are you really like that when you date someone?

CL: Well there are both CL and Chaelin inside me so if he were to approach me hoping I were like CL, he may be disappointed or surprised. But I don’t think I’d be CL when I’m dating someone. I don’t know. I have yet to find out.

Q. Haven’t you ever been worried that you might lose male fans?

CL: I’m sure there are guys out there that like it. People have all sorts of tastes. I can’t help but be myself. Trying my hard to be myself is most important for me.

Q. You say through the lyrics that the girls call you sister and guys call you honey. Which do you like better?

CL: I like both. (laughs)

Q. This song has been compared to G-Dragon’s “One Of A Kind.†Critics said he did a good job of describing the image the public has of him through his style of hip-hop. And I think that “The Baddest Girl†does the same for you in a way as well. Maybe that’s why the two are compared?

CL: Maybe? But the two contain different messages. “One Of A Kind†says ‘I’m different’ and “The Baddest Girl†says “I’m me.â€

Q. You once said before that the reason you don’t compose songs is because you think there’ll be a limit to what you can do and that you want to express freely through other people’s songs. Do you still feel that way?

CL: I actually came off too strong there. YG doesn’t force its musicians to do anything. I had a lot of freedom even for my work as a member of 2NE1. As long as the opportunity arises, I’d like to try out everything I like.

Q. There aren’t that many female rappers in Korea. Yoon Mirae, Lexy, Miryo are the few that are known. Do you hope to join the ranks of their level through this song?

CL: I’d be very honored to. But I don’t want to confine myself to rapping. I want to try out a variety of things as an artist.

2013060416485551882.jpg

Still image from CL’s music video for “The Baddest Female.†[YG Entertainment]

Q. What do you like these days?

CL: This is just how I am but I like things from the past. I like bringing music and fashion from the past and mixing them with the newest trends.

Q. G-Dragon has been praised for his recent solo concerts. Would you want to achieve the same as well?

CL: I love being on stage. I really like hanging out with the audience. I realized through our global tour last year that nothing is as addictive and amazing. Whether it’s as a member of 2NE1 or alone, I want to be on stage all the time.

Q. You’ll soon be making a comeback with 2NE1 as well. What will that be like?

CL: We were supposed to release an album when we released “I Love You†but it got pushed back because of our global tour. I think you’ll get to see the 2NE1 you are used to seeing. We’ve recorded a lot of songs so I can’t wait to have our fans hear them.

Q. How are you different now from the Chaelin that passed along her demo tape to Yang Hyun-suk in front of YG’s office?

CL: I’m the same. I always tell the ladies that are older than me to treat me like a kid. I’ve stopped growing at 15. I want to stay a kid.

Q. Is that why you wrote 1991 on your nails? To emphasize the fact that you’re young?

CL: I wanted my music video and the artwork to contain a lot of personal meaning. The sheep in the album’s logo is there because I was born in the year of sheep. I also wanted the music video to contain a lot of things that are meaningful to me, like the white bag with my face on it. The same goes with 1991.

Q. You’ve projected yourself in so many ways that I think you must wish you got to work on some more songs instead of stopping at “The Baddest Girl.â€

CL: I need to focus on our activities as 2NE1 because we’re still only at the starting point. I’m making 2NE1′s comeback known, just like how Park Bom started off 2NE1′s mini-album through “Don’t Cry.†I want to take things slowly with having people listen to my music.

Q. There hasn’t been a single rumor of you dating anyone throughout your four-year career. Even when you’ve been spotted so many times with G-Dragon.

CL: We’re just very close. Even his fans don’t get jealous of me. I think they just trust me because it’s just so obvious that we’re friends. And because we’re family.

Q. Which do you have the most fun with among performing, recording, writing rap, and hang out with the members of your group?

CL: I have the most fun when I’m creating something. I have the most fun when I’m creating my performances with producer Teddy, stylist Yang Seung-ho, director Seo Hyun-seung and our boss Mr. Yang Hyun-suk.

Q. How much of the music by the senior singers at your agency have you listened to? Have you, by any chance, heard the solo album your boss released or Jinusean’s albums?

One does not really know how k-netizens' minds work. Hates on unattractive people, hates on people who got PS.

That's the world...

PS. While I like the last comment for being reasonable. This just gave me GD which was we are going to imitate all the hip hop trends we can. However, when it was GD, I actually felt it was better due to the fact that he was more in touch with his songs.

She gives really interesting interviews (another way she and GD might as well be siblings). I guess that's why it's always so easy to take one thing she says out of a bunch and spin it out of context. There's always so much in there to learn even for those who stan her and know her background.

Leader CL in particular has given performances where it seems as if she will suck in the audience. Most recently, she took up the challenge as rapper through her solo song “The Baddest Song.†

Ha 'The Baddest Song".

Thats a really good interview, random how she thinks she won't get married for having gold teeth ha.

I don't get what the gold teeth have to do with her getting married though?

who is that in your sig

Looks like kiko mizuhara

Q. You’ll soon be making a comeback with 2NE1 as well. What will that be like?

CL: We were supposed to release an album when we released “I Love You†but it got pushed back because of our global tour.

Wouldn't it have made more sense to release an album BEFORE they went on tour so they had new songs to perform?
