Those are always the ones that die first imstupid.png

I never cared about living a long life anyways

growing old is overrated

Depends, is there something in particular?

it's about a lot of thing

but particularly this teacher

that constantly wants me to go more in depth

about explanation for the art projects I do

like why do I need an explication for producing overly colourful stuff

painting flowers or taking aesthetically pleasing pics, that's just what I like

I'm just tired of constantly making up fakes explanation to satisfy them

when I personally don't care at all

Because the people you usually have to justify to are people who love you? Honestly just guessing because this is so vague lol

you're spot on

I also feel like I'm forcing myself to do a lot of things

just to keep my credibility with my relatives and friends

I'd like to tell them to fuck off but I love them and I don't wanna disappoint them

Maybe you can talk to them about it in a rational and polite way. Don't blow up though.

Art teachers are strange. I use to wag maths and sit in on my friends' art class and their teacher was so over the top with representations and symbolism in art. She once asked her students why the artist decided to paint the curtains blue. No one could give an answer and then she went on this long ass speech about how the artist must have been depressed and he was conveying that through the blue curtains. I was like "maybe he just likes blue curtains?"

Majoring in art?

Yeah, conceptual art is a double edged sword. Though I'd admit it's overly obnoxious these days.

yeah, but I'm starting to question wether I really want to or not

I've never been a conceptual art fan to begin with

but I don't have a problem with it, I still don't

what gets on my nerves is that every art school around here

only care about conceptual art and our teacherswant to make

conceptuel artists out of all us

there's more to art than just concepts and ideas

but nobody seems to understand that

and then there are all this boastful students thinking

that they are reinventing art because they draw stick figures and what not

exactly I have nothing against analysing

arts pieces and trying to understand what the message of the artist is

or what kinda of ties it has with the period said artist lived in

but gosh some teachers just do the most

and over glorify some artist that in my personal opinion

were mediocre

I can relate.

My school was heavy on conceptualism as well and it was super discouraging at first. I even took a year off at some point before coming back to finish since I already put too much time and money into it by then.

But before I jump the gun and give some advice, could I ask what your concentration is? Nothing too specific of course! Like do you enjoy still life's or more free form illustrations? Abstract work? A mix of a couple things? And is it purely for aesthetic purposes and your own gratification? ( which is never wrong, I do work for myself above all else or anyone's opinion as well )

well there are two things

in my art school we have assignations

so for those I tend to very abstract and conceptual thing

like I would try to do sculptures using arte povera principles

but there are other classes where I'm able to do things that are

more in tune with what I really want to produce artistically speaking

and those are definitely purely for aesthetic purposes, especially my photographs

and paintings, but still I'm not exactly pleased with what I'm doing

because there again I constantly have to give conceptual justification to my work

I guess ideally I'd like to go with realism but -not hyperrealism either-

mixed with fantasy and pop art kinda aesthetics

Ahhhh, gotcha and nice!

But regarding justification, I don't think you should feel inclined to provide one or makeup one that isn't there. Your concentration and focus don't need a synthetic explanation. Be honest, your cocenptual approach is your attraction to the subject, just tell them why you like working with said content and media. If photography is merely convientent because your prefer some realist elements, just say that. And if you prefer some fantasy themes with pop art, say just that . You don't have to makeup some bullshit conceptual theme just to appease to them, be honest.

The only thing you need to do is a little more searching as to why these things attract you. Not extremely specific of course, but if you're able to elaborate why you opt for certain choices or details in your work, that should be enough as an explanation. And if they try to be to overbearing with their opinions, let them know. Just say you appreciate it and you'll think about it, but again, you're not inclined to take said advice.

Art school is a lot about standing your ground ( not stubbornly of course, im sure you have taken productive criticism before ). Early on they all might seem like hard asses, but their word isn't written in stone. Don't feel stressed out and like you have to cater to their demands and suggestions. They're only their to offer criticism and some advice, whether it's useful to you or not, it's all on you. It's wrong to let them influence you if you personally feeling it's sucking the joy out of you... so yeah, next time pull them aside, and be as genuine as you can when you ask them why they're so persistent about conceptual ploys and deeper concepts. I'm sure atleast one or two of them will hear out your concerns and agree to some extent, and know where you're coming from, to better your relationship with them.

.... SORRY ABOUT THE RANT. I just can really relate, and I hate seeing people lose their confidence over art because of certain institutions that drain the joy out of it for a lot of people. Good luck and I hope you find your way! Also, get all those connections while still can in school! It's one of the only great perks in art school lol.
