redheart 7,440
It's been approximatively 6 years that I'm a kpop fan and I still don't see the utility of those I've read somewhere that dating would distract idols from doing their job properly it's some bs if you want my opinion, you have tons of singers, artists and actor that are married and it never kept them from doing their job, I mean if you have motivation and ambition from the get go how is dating going to keep you from doing your job? idgi especially because those bans last for like 3 or 4y and then it's lifted, like are you telling me you want idols to do their job for the first 4 years and then after just half ass it? I think dating bans are one of those things that keep hard core fans in this illusion that idols are theirs, and 100% devoted to their fans but don't you want your favs to have a personal life, fall in love and be happy? they all like super hot and good looking and we are asking them to stay single and then when they do start dating it becomes a "scandal" dating bans should just cease to exist in my honest opinion edit: I understand that idol culture is based on this but I honestly believe that it's possible to have both? it's already what happens in reality because obviously idols lie about their personal life to their fans anyway, why keep disillusion? I mean maybe it's because I'm an Ifan and it'd be different for kfans but it doesn't change anything for me wether my favs date or no I'd still find them talented and good looking it doesn't change anything that they have a dating ban

Haze 10,915
Yup, the only reason they exist is because it keeps a majority of the fans fantasies intact, and their wallets open. Idol culture unfortunately heavily relies on this.
dux 3,142
idk, dating bans shouldnt exist, but kpop is half built on thirsty fans, deluded into thinking their idol is theirs. i think thats the real problem that needs addressing.

Mccuish 1,935
It's stupid that idols are banned from having a dating life. It's not idols faults that fans are stupid when it comes to their bias dating.

Grape Soda 12,004
I understand the losing money stigma but the more you treat a person like a product the more their fans see them as their property. Set the fact that they are going to date straight up at debut and don't push that "my fans are my ideal type" shit.
teal 2,285
Dating bans are completely nonsensical. Idols are young and are bound to date, to want to fall in love to do all the normal things that we all do. All these fake (and I believe that they are all fake) dating bans do is reassure fans that the idols will be emotionally available to the fans for the duration of their contracts. Which will never happen anyway. I wish idols would just date pubically from the start and shatter the fans illusions so that they would "deal" with relationship "scandals" better when the eventually do come. I bet most idols feel like the great Britney:

Umji's butt minder 796
You could end the dating ban, but all it would take is one pregnant female idol or gf and all hell would break loose. Technically it already happened. Soyul and Moon Hee Jun. People were so triggered over that and all it's aspects.

Hallyu is based on looks and superficiality in a way that Western music isnt. IDOLS are literally idolized in a way that Western artisits (save for the teen ones) aren't. Thats what kpop sells, and companies are most likely trying to succeed right? the whole industry is a bit messed lol @bold its a big risk unless youre indie or khiphop or some jazz outside kpop idol groups

Arclowz 693
It's unpleasant, but necessary to protect the idols. I don't think most idols adhere to the dating ban, but as long as the rule exists fans will shrug off any rumor. It allows fans to continue being delusional about their favs.
