Do you need a degree?

Does a person need a degree?

For instance, here's a scenario. You're in college, there's only a year and half before you graduate. You actually didn't think that much while choosing your current course. However, you've discovered many things and wanted to do something else that makes you really happy. You have thought of leaving college and pursue what you like. (e.g. YouTuber, celebrity, actor, performing arts; those things that doesnt necessarily need a degree)

Now, you've suddenly won a lottery price that can supply your life for at least, maybe 10 years. Also, your family has started a business which has its stable (and not little) income using the lottery price. Would you pursue college or just continue living your life the way you want?

Do you need a degree? (despite having/not having this scenario). Discuss. :)

It's good to have the piece of paper as a back-up, but school's not for everyone and not every career requires it. I have one (almost), because my career requires it. That's it. If I didn't need it, I wouldn't still be in school right now. And should I decide to pursue another career that requires it, I'll be back in school - but only because it's necessary at that point.

It's best for one to figure out what they want to do first and pursue the necessary tools (degree or whatever else), instead of hurriedly choosing a program, getting a degree in something and trying to find a career that matches it. Unfortunately, that isn't a luxury that everyone has so, oh well.

For myself, I would still get it as a backup plan. Life is unpredictable so gotta at least have the qualifications to do something in the event that I lose everything

I agree but I also think that there's nothing to stop a person from going back to finish later if they decide that's what they need to do

unless you're an american with no money, then it's better to finish the damn degree now while you still can count on the money being there for it. omgwtf.png because trying to do school and a full time job and then dealing with even more additional debt at the same time is hell

I don't think degrees are all that nowadays tbh. It depends on the career you want though, obviously, like for medicine/engineering.

For me, I think the best way to secure income is to actually start a business, a 9-5 job is just a means to fund that.

Tbh, if I could rewind my life, I think I would have skipped uni and applied for a training placement straight out of school in a finance field.

I would still do it... It's a waste of my money and time to quit halfway through... Also having a degree is an achievement it's not useless and you should be proud of it and you can go one later to do get a career i am not the one to live of my family, I want to be independent and be proud of the money i make.  I would lowkey have my own business on the side with some of the money from the lottery.

ya, here apparently you need 2-3 foreign languages, a degree and previous experience at the kind of job you want to get a sh*tty 700euros/month job

there are many ads like "16-25 yo goodlooking girls with atleast 2 year experience at this kind of shop/job and english + french/german/russian" ?? like first of all i didnt start working when i was 14 and also good luck finding someone like that

..and that's to work in a cafe or tourist shop. All my friends who take studying/uni seriously go in other european countries for masters + maybe PhD and find jobs there after

I didnt use to want to study in uni but after seeing the only jobs I could find w no degree were rare and physically tiring I thought I cant do this when I'm 40+ tired and with family" so I'm trying to get a degree even though I dont really love the uni I got accepted in..
