I started learning how to write hiragana and katakana in 2007 before Memrise and Duolingo were even created so I learned the old fashioned way by writing each over and over again and then self-testing myself.

Just be careful with the katakana that look slightly similar.

Honestly I would put reading before writing. Just download every hiragana/Katakana app you can find and practice. You can learn how to read them in a few hours.
Since you are not native, I suppose you won't write letters yet, so let writing for what is. Most people use a computer nowadays anyway. Same for when you will learn kanji. Those are super hard to write because of the stroke order, but learning how to read them should be a more reachable goal.

Try to find goals that are easily to reach so you feel satisfied and keep going.
So reading and speaking, should do it for now. Then writing.

Good luck!!!
