question to black people about culture appropriation

Ok so im north african but my skin is white. Im also an arab. My hair are really curly.

Would it be culture appropriation if I do a lot of braids with my hair. Because its really annoying my hair is very big when its dry and I wanted to braid them so it would look less big. But I see everywhere that someone with white skin cant do it because of black history and other reasons I dont know about.

Can someone tell me if I can and if I cant why?

Edit: thank you all for giving me your opinions and informations!!

i'm assuming you mean box braids, and honestly i say go for it.

for me, personally, cultural appropriation isn't just the act but it's the feelings behind the act. like wearing dreads isn't inherently bad, but, for me, it makes me feel a certain way because all over the media black people with dreads are treated like dirty thugs, but other people wearing them are treated like style icons. same thing goes for braids, i've seen too many nonblack people braid their hair and act as if they're somehow better than all the other black people who get told off or worse for wearing braids.

most people i know wear braids for the same reason you want them, i currently have faux locs on because i didn't want to bother with my hair for a while. i'm just one person, and my views don't speak for every black person in the world. but i personally don't think it's a problem.

Will you be wearing braids to explicitly ridicule black people or using braids to profit off of black culture while mocking black culture?

If you said no to either of the above statements, then it's not culture appropriation. Wear whatever hairstyle you want.

Culture appropriation has been abused as a phrase and has turned into a meaningless phrase

No no I actually find it extremely pretty on black people !

i wan't trying to imply anything about you, i hope it didn't come across that way ;;;

if you do end up getting them done, take care of your scalp, moisturize it as often as possible, and try to keep your roots clean. i fucked up with that the last time i did it and my hair kinda matted and it was a bitch to comb out :/

don't take this the wrong way but i have to ask, because i usually never get the chance to ask non-black, why do you want box braids for?

I know you said your hair is curly and you want to maintain it but why not dutch braids or fish braids??

Why box braids specifically? +Are you familiar on how the process of getting braids usually go??
