Do you use the word "whom" in common speech?

  1. 1. How often do you use it?

    • When grammatically correct, always.
      9
    • Interchangeably with "who"
      5
    • Never
      10
    • When are you supposed to use "whom" anyways????

Personally I think it's very archaic and sounds weird and the only thing keeping it from becoming completely obsolete is people's excessive desire to be "grammatically correct" and not let go of things when they should. -_-

Just to reiterate, I'm talking about casual speech here, not anything formal or official.

yeah I use it. maybe it's more common here in the UK though, like "whilst" which I believe is rare elsewhere but people here still use it all the time and not even people who are otherwise "grammatically correct" or try to be in their speech

it depends on who I'm speaking to and the level of formality required though of course. like I'd use "to whom it may concern" on a formal letter but obv no need for it in an informal one

who - >subject (he/she)

whom - > object (him/her)

"send her a text" "to whom?"

ppl use "whom" a lot more often than u think

I know the formal rules.

At least where I come from, any normal person would say "Who should I send the text to?" or at least "To who?" Saying "whom" in conversational speech just sounds forced and awkward.

That's more of a formal thing that forces you to sound official, I was talking about casual conversational speech.

that's not formal lmao. it's grammatically correct. u wouldn't say "to who it may concern" because that doesn't make sense

but yea I do that too. It sounds weird saying who in places where whom should be. It just comes out naturally you know? But I think it also depends on where you were raised as well.

For example, where I live, people would say "Who did you talk to?" the vast majority of the time, rather than the completely grammatically correct "With whom did you talk?"

Same people where I live would do the same thing just me personally, I was raised to be grammatically correct when talking esp. to elders
