Job or Higher studies???

I am a Civil Engineering graduate and I have been working for the last 3 years(though the work was completely unrelated to my field of study!) Lately I have been thinking of pursuing my Masters in a subject related to Civil Engineering(most probably Earthquake engineering).I am planning to enroll myself in a University in Japan but my mom says that studying abroad won't guarantee me a good job. She wants me to continue working. What should I do? I'm in a dilemma! 😔

i think your mom is right in what she said but at the same time it's up to you and your personal career goals~ because in the end, the goal is actually getting a good job so try to find out and think about if continuing your studies will greatly help you achieve what you want in your career !

studying abroad could be an amazing experience though! but i'm sure that would put you in more debt(?) so just think about your end goal and if it's worth it~

Do you want a masters for higher pay? Just wondering!

I want to work in a field which is related to my Engineering degree. It was my mistake that I opted for the first job that came my way (not related to my field of study). It's been almost 4years since my graduation and I am certain that I will not be able to search for a Engineering job now. I thought maybe pursuing a Masters will make things different and yes the pay too ðŸ˜

Their only question is "What if you don't get a job after investing a huge sum of money?" I don't have an answer for that because I cannot predict the future! I am unable to make them understand and this is mentally affecting me. I'm not happy with my current job and I see no point in continuing something that I am not happy with.

well in that case then you definitely shouldn't continue with something that you aren't happy with because that wont help your future, only harm it! >< but then what about getting a different job that is in your field or one that will make you happy instead of continuing to study?

Did you try applying to any Engineering jobs?

it's really up to you and your personal desires but if you're very ambitious career-wise I would start working first. you can return to studies anytime, but in the workforce experience really counts more than education these days. sadly having an MA doesn't guarantee a higher salary, or even a job in the first place. best to get your foot in the door as soon as possible, then you can build from there and specialise if you want.

either way I'm sure you'll be fine whatever you decide to do

just my advice as someone with an MA who wishes they entered the workforce earlier and currently works in a field totally unrelated to what I studied anyway
