So I have to write a position paper over Singapore...

But I don't know where to start... unimpressed.png

This would have been so much easier if my group would have chosen Myanmar. The question could have been something like 'should the international community (UN) intervene in the Rohingya crisis' and if yes, then a good spin off would have been 'can economic sanctions even work in Myanmar' (atm no, bc of China and perhaps Russia (UN security council veto vote). Also, Myanmar is mainly dependent on a few Asian countries for imports and exports (with China being its biggest partner) so in terms of other countries trying to call for economic action against them, Myanmar's probably like 'imstupid.png'  and then you could jump into what China has to gain from Myanmar (perhaps an opportunity to build a strong economic partnership/friendship and expand influence in the region) and then you could try to tie it into the TPP deal and South China Sea Dispute or something like that...

idk I'm just rambling...

Thailand and prostitution was also brought up and someone else in the group wanted to talk of dismantling it because of all the issues that stem from it such as HIV/STDs, human trafficking, drugs, abuse, the involvement of children, the general exploitation of sex workers etc which is great and all, but how are you going to dismantle an industry that brings in $6.4 billion dollars in annual revenue and accounts for 10% of Thailand’s GDP, without anything to replace it? Better yet, what government would agree to such terms?! rolleyes.gif So that went out the window.

Also, it was a very loaded topic. The amount of time and research would be a lot because its not a one-dimensional problem, and I have other papers to write for other classes warstarplz.png

I've spent some time researching and came across issues that Singapore is facing such as high housing costs, poor treatment of migrant workers, discrimination towards Malays and Indians, widening gap between the rich and the poor (also no defined poverty line or minimum wage set), lack of freedom of speech or freedom of the press, rigid education system, high costs of living, low birthrates (aging population) etc

However, I don't know how to turn at least one of these issues into a question which I can take a position on and back it up. Someone suggested to go the route of 'Was the trade-off Singapore made for economic success worth it?' but that would require months of research and several years spent in Singapore living and working amongst the locals.

I would appreciate any help!!! ohbi.png (I'll also give some won)

Do it on the effect of legalized gambling on the local population.  It's become a major issue in Singapore since they opened Marina Bay Sands and Resorts Word Sentosa, and despite government restrictions they haven't been able to stop addicted locals from spending themselves into oblivion and being preyed upon by loan sharks. There are lots of news articles on this problem that are easy to search for.

How about "The government censorship towards the press needs to be reduced"? There are quite some preposition you can make for supporting or against. For supporting arguments, it's easy. For the against arguments, you can always say that they have such a big control over the press so the press can't do overly sexual/violent or they can censor hoax news as well.

Good luck!
