Netflix won't air it till December 29th. Viki is the only subber and I guess with it premiering on christmas where most subbers are busy celebrating + its lenght makes it harder to sub. I hope the monkey's minions team will grow and we'll get subs faster.

Btw what happened to ep 2 is so upsetting. ohdearplz.png ep 2 will air tomorrow, I hope they salvage the situation a bit...

is that so upsetting? since the rating seems dropped a bit

tvN Apologizes For Broadcast And Post-Production Issues With 2nd Episode Of “Hwayugiâ€

Hwayugi7.jpg

UPDATE: tvN has announced that the re-edited Episode 2 will be broadcast on December 25 at 6:10 p.m. KST. Following numerous issues during the December 24 broadcast of “Hwayugi,†tvN has apologized to its viewers.

While the commercial breaks are normally only supposed to last a minute, they went on for an unexpected long amount of time during this broadcast, showing trailers for film “Mother†and variety program “Youn’s Kitchen†as well. In addition to these commercials, clips from script reading sessions for “Mother†and “Youn’s Kitchen†were shown instead of returning back to “Hwayugi.†During all of this, there was a caption that read, “The broadcast is being delayed due to internal issues within the broadcasting company. We ask for your understanding as the broadcast will continue shortly.â€

While “Hwayugi†eventually began airing normally again, the broadcast was abruptly cut altogether at around 10:38 p.m. KST with an announcement from tvN through a caption. It read, “We will be ending this broadcast due to internal issues.â€

There were also problems with the episode itself. Viewers noticed several issues that were not resolved in post-production. During the scene where Oh Yeon Seo‘s character is auditioning, wires holding up the “demons†could still be seen, although such things are normally erased through CG. Other examples include visible wires holding up picture frames, and a green screen that was not edited out.

Hwayugi8.jpg

tvN officially apologized for these issues, stating, “The broadcast of the second episode of ‘Hwayugi’ on December 24 did not go smoothly due to delays in post-production. We would like to sincerely apologize for making viewers feel uncomfortable, and we will do everything possible to make sure an incident like this does not happen again.â€

Explaining how the production crew has been giving it their all while filming and editing in order to make a high-quality drama, tvN continued, “While they tried their best to complete everything within a short amount of time, the production crew’s passion and ambition unfortunately led to the huge mistake that was [today’s] broadcasting accident. We will learn from today’s mistake and make sure to make it up to the viewers with better broadcasts.â€

As it was cut and did not air fully, the second episode of “Hwayugi†will be reedited and rebroadcast.

I've just finished watching Ep 1 and I'm loving it! A pity for Ep 2 broadcasting issues but they had re-broadcast Ep 2 with no Ads, hopefully it won't affect the ratings for the subsequent episodes, else it's such a pity!

Pray for the success of this drama and hope it continues to be as interesting and funny!

Oh god I didn’t know about the mess that happened since I was out for Christmas...

Wow... tvN... it’s my first time seeing them like this.

The casts deserve better. Hoping for smooth episodes next time!

And wow I’m so happy Jaewon appeared on episode 2, it was enough for me. Hope to see him more soon!

Ep 4 will also be delayed, knets aren't happy. The drama is really good story/acting wise, even the cinematography and everything, but TvN's greed to end 2017/start 2018 with a bang resulted in this mess. They wanted Seung Gi and waited for him, then they should have delayed the drama till they can air it decently!

I hope they get their shit together.

The blood thing makes me wondering what happens when ever she's on her period.

I didn't think of that, but that's so ... smart.

  • Hwayugi: Episode 2hwayugi02-00145a.jpg

I’m already loving this setup, which has a funny should-I-love-you-or-eat-you relationship between human and monster at the center, like My Girlfriend Is a Gumiho did. In practice it’s more like they took the blueprint of Journey to the West and mixed it with vampire lore and a contract relationship, but it comes together in a surprisingly natural way. It really helps that Seung-gi is so perfectly cast as this infuriating but endearing hero, who shows just enough warmth under his devilish façade to make me love him.

The second episode had some major missteps in production though, and there was a series of broadcast accidents that occurred when it first aired, from stuntmen’s wires hanging all over the place to CG green screens showing. The worst was when commercials repeated instead of the last twenty minutes of the broadcast, and the episode just cut off without an ending. It’s worrisome to see live-shoot mishaps so early into a show’s run (you couldn’t have just premiered a week later?), and I hope they can get it together and air tighter episodes from here on out. Episode 2 was re-edited and re-aired in full on Monday.

EPISODE 2 RECAP

hwayugi02-00036a.jpg

In the past, little ghost-seeing girl Sun-mi runs up to the other kids at school and attempts to join a game, only to have them spit on the tree she touched in case she brought them bad juju. Left alone in tears, Sun-mi apologizes to the tree and ends up with a cut on her hand, and the scent of her blood spreads through the air.

A schoolgirl ghost calls to Sun-mi from atop the tree and asks to play, saying that her blood smells nice. The ghost creepily stretches her arm all the way down to pull Sun-mi up, but thankfully Grandma arrives just in time to yank her down to safety.

hwayugi02-00046.jpg

Grandma warns her not to bleed, and Sun-mi asks if she has to hide alone for the rest of her life. But Grandma assures her that someone with the fate to protect her will come, and tells Sun-mi to be strong and live well until then.

As she says this, Grandma begins to fade and disappear. Oh how sad, Grandma was a ghost? Sun-mi, who’s wearing a mourning pin in her hair, watches her fade away in tears.

In the present, mischievous Monkey King Sohn Oh-gong wraps the cut on Sun-mi’s arm with a bandage, and tells her to keep it covered because demons are attracted to the scent of her blood—the blood of Sam-jang, the monk.

hwayugi02-00061.jpg

He confirms that he originally came here to eat her, but says he was shocked when he saw her face: “How can I eat you when I know your face?†Ha, glad you have some standards.

Sun-mi thanks him for protecting her, and he says very casually that they have 25 years of unforgettable connection between them. She’s surprised since he said he never once thought of her, but Oh-gong admits that he was just trying to act tough.

He decides that he can’t just leave her unprotected when demons will flock to her, and declares that he’ll honor his promise from 25 years ago. He offers to break their old contract and sign a new one to become her protector, and puts out his hand.

hwayugi02-00099.jpg hwayugi02-00105.jpg

Sun-mi is moved by the gesture and reaches out to touch his palm, but then she notices the eager look on his face, which gives him away. He really does have the worst poker face of all time. She realizes that he’s trying to break their original contract because it’s preventing him from eating her. Oh-gong’s eyes glow red at her words, showing his true intent. Argh, bad Monkey!

Sun-mi dares him to go ahead and eat her if he can and stalks off, and Oh-gong blocks her path and leans in menacingly. He slams his hand against the wall so hard that he takes a piece of it with them as they fly clear out to the other side, and they float there glaring daggers at each other.

COMMENTS

Like any good magical contract relationship, this one has some great push and pull in the dynamic where both parties need something from the other, and are unwittingly growing attached while trying to outsmart each other in their game. I eat this stuff up. It’s just the beginning between Sun-mi and Oh-gong, but there’s already a great give-and-take between them, because for all of Oh-gong’s supernatural powers, he’s not so sneaky as he’d like to think, and they’re pretty evenly matched when it comes to lying and reading each other. It sets us up nicely for the romance down the line, especially now that Sun-mi has some power in their relationship. She’s smart and resourceful, while he’s all magical brawn and no deep thought in sight. But their connection has these genuine moments that come out every time she’s vulnerable with him and he’s helping her despite himself.

I also like that Oh-gong is such a different kind of hero, a wild card with an unpredictable nature. I mean, to have a hero who’s actually faced with the moral conflict of whether or not to eat the heroine is hilarious, and definitely uncommon. Mawang is the more traditional type of hero we’d get in a vampire story, for instance, where a monster is fighting his demonic urges and trying to live the straight and narrow, and tempted by the heroine’s delicious blood. But Sohn Oh-gong is almost completely amoral at this stage, and sees nothing wrong with seeing her as a tasty snack, which cracks me up and keeps their dynamic fresh and interesting. Every time you think he might just start to care and have a heart, he turns his attention to how he’ll season her.

There’s endless joke potential in this kind of character, because even in the first two episodes, every time I thought Sun-mi had gotten through to him, there was more bottom to be uncovered. Of course, that’ll come to bite him in his monkey’s ass someday when he falls sincerely in love and isn’t taken seriously, but this is why his childish, infuriating nature isn’t actually hateful—because we see his foibles so clearly, and the mistakes he’ll make before he even makes them. It helps immensely that he’s an incorrigible rascal, not an evil bastard, especially the way Seung-gi plays him.

It’s probably Oh-gong’s friends that indicate that there’s more to him than a selfish monkey with a taste for humans, and they’re also a huge part of making the mythology feel complex and layered. I especially love moments like the General Store full of magical odds and ends, which is a tried and true fantasy trope for a reason—you believe in the magical power of any object that comes out of that place, and it fills out the world in a believable way. So far the peppering of monsters and demons and magical elements has been just enough to pique my curiosity and build a supernatural world (when the CG is done, mind you), and I’m happy to be whisked away to a new dramaverse. Fingers crossed that the production team gets the editing and effects under control to keep us there. Here’s a suggestion: Make the episodes shorter! More sleep for everyone!

I am so incredibly biased with this drama. I want more Lee Hongki/PK hurrplz.png

So far I really like all the characters because despite their supernatural nature they do feel like real people.

Ma Wang reminds me a lot of Willy Wonka/Jack Sparrow for some reason and I absolutely love his slightly overdramatic speech-pattern. It suits the character incredibly well. I also can't quite figure out if he's meant to be an antagonist or not at this point, and that's not a bad thing at all. I love that there aren't really any clear sides here.

PK so far seems to be an exaggerated version of Lee Hongki himself which is also something I love (I actually cried and laughed when they used FTISLAND's perfomance at KCON Paris to introduce him). I wonder if the writers have taken some inspiration from the man himself. I want much more of him though...

Oh Gong is a great main character so far. As mentioned in the lovely re-cap states, he's not a regular hero. His moral dilemma is hilarious to witness and it certainly has the potential to bring a lot of humour. I don't quite have a grasp on him either at this point but it seems he might have tried to become a deity before being kicked out of Heaven... I'm not sure if I got that part right though.

And I actually really like our female lead so far. She isn't a damsel in distress even if she's saved a lot (I give her a pass because she's attacked by demons and she's human). I hope she won't be someone who gets in trouble all the time just to have the male characters run in and rescue her though.

I look forward to meeting the zombie-girl too, I'm hoping for her to NOT be a 3rd/4th wheel in a love-triangle/square.

It's been so long since I saw Hongki and Geunsuk together... It's gonna be great if they have scenes together. Those two spell mischief of massive proportions.

“Hwayugi†Staff Member Revealed To Have Been Severely Injured On Set, tvN Responds

Hwayugi7.jpg

On December 26, a crew member of “Hwayugi†was belatedly revealed to have been severely injured while working on set.

The accident itself occurred early morning on December 23, the same day “Hwayugi†premiered. According to earlier reports, the crew member was working to hang a chandelier from the ceiling at the request of a producer, when he fell from a height of over 3 meters (approximately 9.84 feet), breaking his spine and hip bone. His pelvis was reported to have hit the ground first, then his head, upon which he began to show symptoms of cerebral hemorrhaging.

Based on one source’s account, the crew member was unconscious as he was being taken to the emergency room, and may be paralyzed from the waist down. The initial professional opinion was that the crew member “could also become brain dead,†but his mental capacity has returned to the point he is able to recognize his wife, children, and other family members. The crew member’s family is reported to be preparing to sue the producer who requested for him to work on the set during at such early hours.

The crew member is a member of the artistic team from MBC Art, a subsidiary of MBC, and has 20 years of experience. Under a service contract with JS Pictures, the production company of “Hwayugi,†the crew member is currently acting as one of the set managers.

Despite this accident, “Hwayugi†aired as planned on December 23, and reportedly, the production company JS Pictures as well as tvN were initially quiet about the accident.

“Hwayugi†also experienced problems during its December 24 broadcast, which belatedly seem to have been partially due to the accident on set. Reportedly, a different source from the drama commented, “Do you believe that filming or post-production could go on normally when someone has been severely injured on set? The broadcasting accident that happened in episode 2 was a given.â€

tvN apologized to the family, and explained their course of action in the following statement:

“We would first like to apologize to the family members who are hurting due to this unfortunate accident, and are sorry to deliver [this news] to everyone who has shown interest in ‘Hwayugi'†We recognized the magnitude of the ‘Hwayugi’ crew member’s accident from its onset, and have been regularly discussing with the crew member’s family in regards to his continuing treatments.â€

“Since the accident that occurred while the crew member was preparing for the following day’s shoot, at around 2 a.m. KST on December 23, an executive producer was with the crew member in the ambulance as well as during the first stages of treatment. We have continuously been in mutual contact with [the family].â€

“Moving forward, his family members have delegated his agency MBC Art to handle matters regarding the accident. The production company JS Pictures and MBC Art will be meeting to discuss tomorrow [December 27 KST].â€

“Sincerely hoping that he will recover as soon as he can, the producers of ‘Hwayugi’ and tvN are carefully keeping watch over his progress. We will do our absolute best while handling regarding this accident after the fact. We will be more careful and make every effort to make sure an accident does not occur again on set.

I'm loving this so far even with the issues. The ratings were fine for the ep. 2 rebroadcast and the episode was great, so I don't really think there will be lasting issues as long as nothing else happens. It really helps that the show is actually good and the acting is on point.  A lesser should probably would have collapsed by now.  I also think it's a great idea to postpone episode 4. It's a poor time to even air the drama in the first place given that it's new years eve. I don't really get why tvn didn't just wait until January to air the episode to begin with, but it can't be changed now.

Anyway, I love Oh Gong of course and Frosty and PK.  ahmagahplz.png  I love their little chitchats together.  I'm looking forward to the cute zombie girl character next week.

The latest addition to your list of favorite dramas, “Hwayugi†combines sharp wit, fantastic performances, and thrilling fantasy to keep you in front of the television this holiday season and beyond.

An unfortunate little girl with the power to see ghosts, Jin Sun Mi makes a deal with a conniving spirit (Son Oh Gong) to release him from a magical prison in exchange for his protection. She wisely makes him pledge a contract with her, but he wiggles out of his obligation as soon as he is free. Twenty-five years later, she’s still plagued by spirits, and when she coincidentally sees him passing in the street, she’s keen to collect on her contract.

Through the help of Woo Whee (another spirit keen to return to the heavenly world, played by Cha Seung Won), the use of a Geum Gang Go (essentially a magical handcuff), and Sun Mi’s quick thinking, Son Oh Gong’s got his work cut out for him if he is to remain free and continue his path of self-gain.

Hwayugi†To Include Additional Director Moving Forward

Hwayugi-XPN.jpg

“Hwayugi†will include director Kim Jung Hyun moving forward for a more stable broadcast. tvN representatives for “Hwayugi†revealed, “It’s true that Kim Jung Hyun has been appointed director. [He] will make ‘Hwayugi’ alongside director Park Hong Kyun.â€

Director Kim Jung Hyun produced MBC’s “Gu Family Book†with director Shin Woo Chul, and is well known for producing fantasy historical dramas. “Hwayugi†aims to become an improved, high quality drama with the addition of director Kim Jung Hyun.

The drama recently faced issues with its broadcast on December 24 as episode 2 included scenes that had not been edited with computer graphics. The broadcast was also interrupted by breaks, raising frustration from viewers. Additionally, it was revealed a staff member of the drama was severely injured on set. tvN has responded that they will do their best to handle matters regarding their staff and crew.

“Hwayugi†is a modern interpretation of the classic novel “Journey to the West†and follows the story of demons Son Oh Gong and Woo Ma Wang as they try to find light in a dark world. The drama was written by the Hong Sisters and features a star-studded cast that includes Lee Seung GiCha Seung WonOh Yeon Seo, and FTISLAND’s Lee Hong Ki.

The third episode will air on December 30 as usual, but the fourth episode will be delayed a week to ensure a more complete broadcast.
