Lee Hong Ki Talks About Why It Was Actually Hard To Play A Celebrity in tvN drama “Hwayugiâ€

FTISLAND singer Lee Hong Ki has shared the reason that he actually found it hard to play a celebrity in the upcoming drama “Hwayugiâ€! In a recent pictorial and interview for Allure Magazine, the star talked about his character in tvN’s “Hwayugi,†his first drama role in three years. He will be playing the part of Jeo Pal Gye, a superstar celebrity who goes by the name P.K.

Lee Hong Ki commented, “I’ve played a celebrity multiple times, and each time was different. In this drama, my character is the type who shifts back and forth between alliances, but is still lovable.â€

He explained that he actually found it more difficult to play a character who shared his real-life career, because the character was so different from his actual persona. â€œAs a celebrity, it’s actually harder to play the role of a celebrity,†he remarked. “It’s because we don’t usually act like that in real life.â€

Although he has returned to acting, Lee Hong Ki revealed that he still intends to pursue his music career. When asked about his goals, he replied, “It’s always the same for me. [To be] a rock star.†He added, “My dream is freedom, and that’s how I want to live. I plan to sing for the rest of my life.â€

  • Hwayugi (A Korean Odyssey): Episode 1 hwayugi1-00543.jpg

Seung-gi’s back, rejoice! More to the point, Seung-gi’s back with perhaps the most perfectly cast role, which is a promising way to kick off one of the big buzz projects of the year.

This hasn’t been the most thrilling drama season (or seasons), so it’s a bit of an understatement to say I was pinning a lot of hope on Hwayugi (or the faintly generic-sounding A Korean Odyssey) to lift me out of my doldrums, while also trying to keep my expectations to a minimum.

It’s rather early to draw conclusions, but if you asked me which Hong sisters we’re getting with this drama, I’d say it’s much more of the Master’s Sun Hong sisters vibe, and not as much the Big/Warm and Cozy vibe. The source material is rich and plentiful, and I think the Hongs do much better when there’s a lot to riff off of and reinvent, rather than starting from scratch. And the casting really is spot-on.

(The drama does, it must be noted, follow in tvN’s infuriating pattern of shows coming in at ungodly lengths—you want me to watch TWO 90-minute episodes a week? I can barely watch one 90-minute movie a month! As a result, I started drinking to help me get through the exhausting length, which on one hand sped up the watching process but on the other hand vastly slowed down the writing process. You win some, you lose some.)

BACKGROUND

In anticipation of Hwayugi’s run, I’ve been reading the (English-translated, unabridged) Journey to the West for the past several months, because knowing the Hong sisters’ style, I knew they’d be throwing references left and right and I wanted to be able to catch them. Moreover, Journey to the West is a story that I’ve seen referenced a lot in pop culture, but is not really explained—it seems one of those things that is so generally well-known that it’s assumed one is already familiar with the broad strokes of the story. I felt it was knowledge worth having, and so I dove in.

hwayugi1-00148.jpg

I’m only 700 pages into the book (…it has a LOT of pages), but I feel pretty confident in understanding the setup and characters and feel of the world. Journey to the West is, in an overarching sense, a story that starts Taoist and ends Buddhist, and can be seen in some ways as a religious masterwork, although it’s not really “religious†in a straight sense. It’s more folkloric with rich fantasy elements. I wondered whether a 500-year-old classic, seminal literary work might be rather stodgy through a modern lens, but was happily surprised to find Journey to the West funny and irreverent—it really does feel like a rollicking adventure romp.

hwayugi1-00251.jpg

At the core of the story is our Monkey King, who was born a troublemaker. Carved out of stone and given life by spiritual beings, he learns ancient Taoist magic and grows into a being that’s too powerful for his own good—he isn’t overtly evil or malicious, but he is hot-tempered and supremely selfish, so anytime he has an impulse he acts on it. Anytime someone tries to reason with him, he just fights them and wins and does what he wants anyway. After running amok in the heavens for centuries and defeating anyone who tried to challenge him, the Monkey is finally subdued, his powers bound, and his body trapped for hundreds of years.

When he is finally released from his prison, he is given a chance at redemption by accompanying a virtuous human monk on a spiritual journey to collect scriptures in the West. Since Monkey is inherently impish and flighty, he is made to wear a golden circlet that brings him immense pain when the monk recites a sutra, which keeps him in check whenever he’s tempted to go off the rails (which is often). Even as a reborn spiritual disciple, Monkey is frequently mischievous, proving that you can’t change who you are, just what you do! Along the way, he picks up companions—monsters who have all gone astray in their prior lives, have been punished, and are given the same second chance at redemption.

hwayugi1-00326.jpg

Characters:

Sohn Oh-gong: The Koreanized name of Sun Wukong, our Monkey King. At one point before he was imprisoned, Monkey styled himself “the Great Sage, Equal to Heaven,†and is sometimes called this by other characters.

Woo Mawang: Woo Hwi is the name he’s been given, but “Woo Mawang†is the direct translation of Bull Demon King, and the writers are being punny here by making Woo his surname and Mawang his nickname, aka Devil. The supernatural characters mostly call him Mawang, while the humans know him as CEO Woo. As far as I can tell, the Bull Demon King is a pretty minor character in the original novel, so I’m expecting particular liberties with this character.

Jin Sun-mi: Descended from Monk Sam-jang (aka Xuanzang), Jin Sun-mi is a name that basically means beauty. (For instance, jin, sun, and mi are the designations for first-, second-, and third-place winners of beauty pageants.) In the novel, the monk is known for his virtuous nature, but rather wimpy in the face of the dangers of the journey, necessitating the cadre of protectors.

PK: Full name Jeo Pal-ke (Zhu Bajie). To be cheeky, they’ve restyled the idol as PK, rather than Pal-ke. The surname means Pig, and the character is ruled by lust, gluttony, and laziness. The rest of his name means Eight Precepts, which refer to the temptations he ought to resist (greed, lust, etc.). In the novel, Monkey often calls him Idiot as a name.

EPISODE 1 RECAP

In an ornate mansion, an eccentrically dressed man watches a news report of a mountain fire in the Gangwon region. Then we hop over to Gangwon Province, where the arrival of a young girl at school spurs classmate taunts of her being a ghost.

She’s JIN SUN-MI (Kal So-won), and she quietly takes a seat at her desk, which has been defaced with slurs telling her this is a school for people, not ghosts. She ignores them and looks up as the teacher enters and asks the kids brightly to stand up. Sun-mi stands… and then realizes that none of the other kids have seen the teacher. Ack, shivers!

hwayugi1-00027.jpg

The teacher-ghost grins widely to see that one child can see her, and zooms up to Sun-mi’s face (ack! Stop that!) to taunt her. As her classmates eye her in confusion, Sun-mi unfurls her umbrella at the ghost, and a talisman flashes on its surface to repel it.

The real teacher walks in and wonders what Sun-mi is doing with her umbrella out in the empty classroom, while Sun-mi whispers for the ghost to leave her alone.

hwayugi1-00035.jpg

After school, the teacher-ghost haunts Sun-mi’s walk home and gets angry at Sun-mi’s repeated rebuffs. The ghost grabs Sun-mi’s umbrella and looms menacingly, just as a man shows up wielding an umbrella with a black bull’s head for a handle. One slam of the shaft onto the ground sends the ghost flying, then bursting into a cloud of black smoke.

Sun-mi looks up at the man—the eccentric from our opening, WOO MAWANG (Cha Seung-won)—and he smiles at her. She asks how he chased the ghost away, and he slams his umbrella down, causing leaves to blow away. She tries the same with her own umbrella, and is disappointed when it doesn’t work.

hwayugi1-00079.jpg hwayugi1-00087.jpg

She guesses that he’s not human, and Mawang replies, “So you won’t get scared, let’s call me a fairy.†LOL.

Sun-mi tells Mawang that she doesn’t find him scary, unlike when she sees evil ghosts. He deduces that she can see things that aren’t human, saying that he’s been searching for a special human like her to do him a favor. She agrees to help if he’ll swap umbrellas, and they shake on the deal.

Mawang leads Sun-mi through the forest toward a house, where he needs her to retrieve a special fan for him. A fire has been raging in the mountains, and he needs the fan in order to stop the fire. Once she gives him the fan, he’ll give her his umbrella.

COMMENTS

Okay, time to unpack!....

I liked this episode. I went into it trying to clear my mind of any thoughts or hopes, and found myself enjoying the lore, although I wonder if part of that is because I could recognize the source material. There’s always an extra bit of satisfaction in recognizing allusions and references, but that’s a separate issue from whether a story is itself compelling.

think this drama should be fairly accessible to people who have zero background knowledge of Journey to the West, for several reasons: First, it’s a loose adaptation, and resets the world entirely by making it modern-day. There’s definitely new lore that is the Hong sisters’ own, so this is more like an “inspired by†story, not a remake or adaptation. And lastly, I think the original story is really pretty accessible too, as it’s mostly an adventure tale with a massive repository of monster characters and lots of exciting fights.

That said, I do like the way this show is adapting Journey to the West—it’s actually a cleverer adaptation than I thought it would be. There are the obvious traits they’ve worked in, such as Seung-gi’s monkey haircut (which somehow he makes work!), the tiger’s fur Oh-gong wears, his golden rod, and all the monkey and bull references (and, I assume also pig, once PK joins the party).

hwayugi1-01142.jpg

But there’s also the reinterpretation of the characters’ personalities, which I’m enjoying. Seung-gi makes the perfect Sohn Oh-gong, mischievous and hotheaded while at the same time betraying depth beneath the selfish surface. In the original story, I always thought the monk was the dullest character, being wimpy and whiny and constantly scared of monsters while his protector-monsters were flawed and entertaining.

But here, Sun-mi is shown to be brave in the face of her fear, and I really appreciate that while she has the power to see supernatural beings, she doesn’t have any superpowers. She’s still a weak human in a physical sense, but I see strength in her character that will provide a worthy foil for Oh-gong, which is a deeper relationship than I saw in the novel. And there’s a clever twist in making Mawang the actual protector, while Oh-gong is the one out to get her, which flips our hero’s role quite nicely from the original. The writers have put him in the role of someone she needs protection from, while also having set up this loophole where he becomes her protector. I dig that.

I’m hoping the rest of the mythology remains tight and compelling, and that the characters find their way into the quirky, sometimes-friendly, sometimes-at-odds dynamic that I think forms the backbone of this story. Well, that and kisses. I’m not going to be happy without some kisses.

Netflix won't air it till December 29th. Viki is the only subber and I guess with it premiering on christmas where most subbers are busy celebrating + its lenght makes it harder to sub. I hope the monkey's minions team will grow and we'll get subs faster.

Btw what happened to ep 2 is so upsetting. ohdearplz.png ep 2 will air tomorrow, I hope they salvage the situation a bit...

is that so upsetting? since the rating seems dropped a bit

tvN Apologizes For Broadcast And Post-Production Issues With 2nd Episode Of “Hwayugiâ€

Hwayugi7.jpg

UPDATE: tvN has announced that the re-edited Episode 2 will be broadcast on December 25 at 6:10 p.m. KST. Following numerous issues during the December 24 broadcast of “Hwayugi,†tvN has apologized to its viewers.

While the commercial breaks are normally only supposed to last a minute, they went on for an unexpected long amount of time during this broadcast, showing trailers for film “Mother†and variety program “Youn’s Kitchen†as well. In addition to these commercials, clips from script reading sessions for “Mother†and “Youn’s Kitchen†were shown instead of returning back to “Hwayugi.†During all of this, there was a caption that read, “The broadcast is being delayed due to internal issues within the broadcasting company. We ask for your understanding as the broadcast will continue shortly.â€

While “Hwayugi†eventually began airing normally again, the broadcast was abruptly cut altogether at around 10:38 p.m. KST with an announcement from tvN through a caption. It read, “We will be ending this broadcast due to internal issues.â€

There were also problems with the episode itself. Viewers noticed several issues that were not resolved in post-production. During the scene where Oh Yeon Seo‘s character is auditioning, wires holding up the “demons†could still be seen, although such things are normally erased through CG. Other examples include visible wires holding up picture frames, and a green screen that was not edited out.

Hwayugi8.jpg

tvN officially apologized for these issues, stating, “The broadcast of the second episode of ‘Hwayugi’ on December 24 did not go smoothly due to delays in post-production. We would like to sincerely apologize for making viewers feel uncomfortable, and we will do everything possible to make sure an incident like this does not happen again.â€

Explaining how the production crew has been giving it their all while filming and editing in order to make a high-quality drama, tvN continued, “While they tried their best to complete everything within a short amount of time, the production crew’s passion and ambition unfortunately led to the huge mistake that was [today’s] broadcasting accident. We will learn from today’s mistake and make sure to make it up to the viewers with better broadcasts.â€

As it was cut and did not air fully, the second episode of “Hwayugi†will be reedited and rebroadcast.

I've just finished watching Ep 1 and I'm loving it! A pity for Ep 2 broadcasting issues but they had re-broadcast Ep 2 with no Ads, hopefully it won't affect the ratings for the subsequent episodes, else it's such a pity!

Pray for the success of this drama and hope it continues to be as interesting and funny!

yeah i hope for the same thing as well, since those casts deserved to get an appreciation ilikeitplz.png

  • Hwayugi: Episode 2hwayugi02-00145a.jpg

I’m already loving this setup, which has a funny should-I-love-you-or-eat-you relationship between human and monster at the center, like My Girlfriend Is a Gumiho did. In practice it’s more like they took the blueprint of Journey to the West and mixed it with vampire lore and a contract relationship, but it comes together in a surprisingly natural way. It really helps that Seung-gi is so perfectly cast as this infuriating but endearing hero, who shows just enough warmth under his devilish façade to make me love him.

The second episode had some major missteps in production though, and there was a series of broadcast accidents that occurred when it first aired, from stuntmen’s wires hanging all over the place to CG green screens showing. The worst was when commercials repeated instead of the last twenty minutes of the broadcast, and the episode just cut off without an ending. It’s worrisome to see live-shoot mishaps so early into a show’s run (you couldn’t have just premiered a week later?), and I hope they can get it together and air tighter episodes from here on out. Episode 2 was re-edited and re-aired in full on Monday.

EPISODE 2 RECAP

hwayugi02-00036a.jpg

In the past, little ghost-seeing girl Sun-mi runs up to the other kids at school and attempts to join a game, only to have them spit on the tree she touched in case she brought them bad juju. Left alone in tears, Sun-mi apologizes to the tree and ends up with a cut on her hand, and the scent of her blood spreads through the air.

A schoolgirl ghost calls to Sun-mi from atop the tree and asks to play, saying that her blood smells nice. The ghost creepily stretches her arm all the way down to pull Sun-mi up, but thankfully Grandma arrives just in time to yank her down to safety.

hwayugi02-00046.jpg

Grandma warns her not to bleed, and Sun-mi asks if she has to hide alone for the rest of her life. But Grandma assures her that someone with the fate to protect her will come, and tells Sun-mi to be strong and live well until then.

As she says this, Grandma begins to fade and disappear. Oh how sad, Grandma was a ghost? Sun-mi, who’s wearing a mourning pin in her hair, watches her fade away in tears.

In the present, mischievous Monkey King Sohn Oh-gong wraps the cut on Sun-mi’s arm with a bandage, and tells her to keep it covered because demons are attracted to the scent of her blood—the blood of Sam-jang, the monk.

hwayugi02-00061.jpg

He confirms that he originally came here to eat her, but says he was shocked when he saw her face: “How can I eat you when I know your face?†Ha, glad you have some standards.

Sun-mi thanks him for protecting her, and he says very casually that they have 25 years of unforgettable connection between them. She’s surprised since he said he never once thought of her, but Oh-gong admits that he was just trying to act tough.

He decides that he can’t just leave her unprotected when demons will flock to her, and declares that he’ll honor his promise from 25 years ago. He offers to break their old contract and sign a new one to become her protector, and puts out his hand.

hwayugi02-00099.jpg hwayugi02-00105.jpg

Sun-mi is moved by the gesture and reaches out to touch his palm, but then she notices the eager look on his face, which gives him away. He really does have the worst poker face of all time. She realizes that he’s trying to break their original contract because it’s preventing him from eating her. Oh-gong’s eyes glow red at her words, showing his true intent. Argh, bad Monkey!

Sun-mi dares him to go ahead and eat her if he can and stalks off, and Oh-gong blocks her path and leans in menacingly. He slams his hand against the wall so hard that he takes a piece of it with them as they fly clear out to the other side, and they float there glaring daggers at each other.

COMMENTS

Like any good magical contract relationship, this one has some great push and pull in the dynamic where both parties need something from the other, and are unwittingly growing attached while trying to outsmart each other in their game. I eat this stuff up. It’s just the beginning between Sun-mi and Oh-gong, but there’s already a great give-and-take between them, because for all of Oh-gong’s supernatural powers, he’s not so sneaky as he’d like to think, and they’re pretty evenly matched when it comes to lying and reading each other. It sets us up nicely for the romance down the line, especially now that Sun-mi has some power in their relationship. She’s smart and resourceful, while he’s all magical brawn and no deep thought in sight. But their connection has these genuine moments that come out every time she’s vulnerable with him and he’s helping her despite himself.

I also like that Oh-gong is such a different kind of hero, a wild card with an unpredictable nature. I mean, to have a hero who’s actually faced with the moral conflict of whether or not to eat the heroine is hilarious, and definitely uncommon. Mawang is the more traditional type of hero we’d get in a vampire story, for instance, where a monster is fighting his demonic urges and trying to live the straight and narrow, and tempted by the heroine’s delicious blood. But Sohn Oh-gong is almost completely amoral at this stage, and sees nothing wrong with seeing her as a tasty snack, which cracks me up and keeps their dynamic fresh and interesting. Every time you think he might just start to care and have a heart, he turns his attention to how he’ll season her.

There’s endless joke potential in this kind of character, because even in the first two episodes, every time I thought Sun-mi had gotten through to him, there was more bottom to be uncovered. Of course, that’ll come to bite him in his monkey’s ass someday when he falls sincerely in love and isn’t taken seriously, but this is why his childish, infuriating nature isn’t actually hateful—because we see his foibles so clearly, and the mistakes he’ll make before he even makes them. It helps immensely that he’s an incorrigible rascal, not an evil bastard, especially the way Seung-gi plays him.

It’s probably Oh-gong’s friends that indicate that there’s more to him than a selfish monkey with a taste for humans, and they’re also a huge part of making the mythology feel complex and layered. I especially love moments like the General Store full of magical odds and ends, which is a tried and true fantasy trope for a reason—you believe in the magical power of any object that comes out of that place, and it fills out the world in a believable way. So far the peppering of monsters and demons and magical elements has been just enough to pique my curiosity and build a supernatural world (when the CG is done, mind you), and I’m happy to be whisked away to a new dramaverse. Fingers crossed that the production team gets the editing and effects under control to keep us there. Here’s a suggestion: Make the episodes shorter! More sleep for everyone!
