I think if you count the leads it'd be in this order: LSG - CSW - OYS, the story is centered around those three then comes te full gang of the monk/monkey king with LHK and the other guy.

Watching Hong sisters dramas, they focus more on their main leads, but they gave such a rich description of characters so I hope they'll hold their weight too and are given a solid story. I mean this is 20 ep, they need to make it interesting and not drag the plot.

i see, i guess ur right then LOL hurrplz.png

Cutting through clouds and hands of fire in "Hwayugi"

Let the bromance begin! I didn’t realize how much I needed a Lee Seung-gi(You’re All Surrounded) and Cha Seung-won (Hwajeong) reunion until now. Described as an â€œabsolute exorcist romance†in the group poster below, Hwayugi is going strong in its promo game, just having released its official posters and more teasers. This upcoming Hong sisters drama features Lee Seung-gi, Oh Yeon-seo (My Sassy Girl), and Cha Seung-won as our main trio battling the forces of evil in a modernized Korean drama adaptation that draws its source material from the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West.

hhhhyugi0b.jpg

Oh Yeon-seo plays your not-so-average real estate businesswoman who can see spirits (analogous to monk Xuanzang in Journey to the West). Lee Seung-gi plays the trickster monkey king Sun Wukong, who loves to antagonize Cha Seung-won’s character, the Bull Demon King who has been trying to patiently serve on earth to gain godhood and entry into heaven. To humans, he’s known as the charismatic gentle CEO of the best entertainment company in Korea. The two other characters in the group poster include Lee Hong-ki (Modern Farmer), who plays a top idol celeb that embodies the pig character, and Jang Gwang(Thief-nom, Thief-nim) who plays a real estate chaebol who embodies Friar Sand.

In the first teaser, Oh Yeon-seo stares at Lee Seung-gi in wonder as her voiceover narrates, “surrounded by light and capable of cutting through clouds…†and he introduces himself as Sun Wukong, the heavenly being. Then Cha Seung-won warns her to pretend she doesn’t see or hear any of the spirits that surround her. It happens that both Cha Seung-won and Lee Seung-gi were looking for the spirit of the monk Xuanzang that resides within Oh Yeon-seo. Lee Seung-gi even promises to come to her rescue anytime she calls his name, and when she does, he shows up all bloody and bruised but with a smirk on his face, happy that she called.

In the next teaser, the ultimate showdown between Lee Seung-gi and a corridor full of dark spirits commences. But suddenly, he pauses for a moment to check with Oh Yeon-seo, asking if she’d really rather prefer being eaten by them than by him. She replies that their first priority is to escape, and he resumes his fighting stance.

But I don’t think he ever gets a chance to fight them, because in the next teaser, Cha Seung-won shows up in the same corridor. And with one pound of his mighty cane, he vanquishes all of the dark creatures. Then he turns on Lee Seung-gi and blames him as the primary reason he hasn’t ascended into heaven yet as a new god. Lee Seung-gi pretends not to hear him, and the teaser ends with Cha Seung-won in extreme frustration.

Oh my gosh, it looks so good! Mythical fantasy romance Hwayugi will air on tvN on Saturdays and Sundays, starting December 23.

With only about a week left before its premiere, tvN’s “Hwayugi†has released videos of the cast’s table reading and behind-the-scenes interviews.

“Hwayugi†is a romantic fantasy drama written by the Hong Sisters that is a reinterpretation of the Chinese classic novel “Journey to the West.†It boasts of a star-studded cast including Lee Seung GiOh Yeon SeoCha Seung Won, FTISLAND’s Lee Hong Ki, Bora, and more.

In the video of the drama’s table reading, the actors and staff are seated facing each other in a packed room. After a short statement from the director, Cha Seung Won reads his lines as the CEO of Korea’s largest entertainment company named Woo Hwi Chul as well as the noble monster named Woo Ma Wang.

Woo Ma Wang butts heads with the decadent troublemaker named Son Oh Gong, played by Lee Seung Gi. These two get caught in a love triangle over a female human being who can see demons named Jin Seon Mi played by Oh Yeon Seo.

Other actors joined the read such as superstar demon Jeo Pal Gye (Lee Hong Ki), sexy star Alice (Bora), zombie girl (Lee Se Young), and more. The actors were fully immersed in their characters and couldn’t help but laugh at the funny script.

The second video takes viewers behind-the-scenes of the “Hwayugi†teaser videos, featuring interviews by Lee Seung Gi, Cha Seung Won, and Oh Yeon Seo.

In his interview, Cha Seung Won describes his character and says his personality is about 50 percent similar to his own. He also mentions that although it is a drama about monsters and may seem unrealistic, viewers may find the drama relatable and fun upon watching.

Lee Seung Gi also appears and explains his character Son Oh Gong as someone who will showcase a new side to him. He added that his character is 86 percent similar to his true personality, and expressed his excitement for the drama.

Oh Yeon Seo told viewers her character Jeon Seon Mi is only about 15 to 20 percent similar to her, and that viewers should look forward to how she changes after meeting Son Oh Gong. She also revealed that since she and Lee Seung Gi are the same age in real life, they were able to get closer and bond over filming difficult scenes.

Premiere Watch: Hwayugi

premiere_hwayugi.jpg

Hwayugi

Time slot: Saturday & Sunday
Broadcaster: tvN
Genre: Fantasy horror romance
Episode count: 16

Reasons to watch: Yay, Hwaygi week is finally upon us! I know I’ve been disappointed by the Hong sisters writing duo on more than one occasion, but they’re also the writing team that brought us Master’s SunBest Love, and My Girlfriend Is a Gumiho, not to mention dramaland classics like My Girl and Delightful Girl Chun-hyang. So hope is still alive for them to come back strong in their latest project, especially when they’re reuniting with Lee Seung-gi, Cha Seung-won, and Lee Hong-ki.

The fantasy romance is a modern twist on the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West that places an assortment of supernatural beings in the middle of modern-day Seoul, a city infested with dark spirits that must be eradicated. I’m going into it not expecting a faithful remake in any sense of the word, since the novel seems to be just a jumping off point for a few key characters (like the Monkey King or the Bull Demon King), and I expect the drama to create a mythology all its own that’s very different.

The one carryover seems to be the Monkey King’s mischievous personality, which I’m looking forward to most since this is Lee Seung-gi’s first post-army drama, and I like him best when he’s playing delightfully impish, immature characters. Come to think of it, I don’t know of a time when he didn’t play a character like that. Maybe it’s just fate. God, I hope his army comeback project doesn’t bomb.

Please don’t be a disappointment, Show. It’s Christmas for crying out loud! Have a heart!

Deals with demon kings and rascal monkeys in tvN’s Hwayugi

hwayugi-teaser121714.jpg

Only six days left to go!! I’ve been trying to keep my expectations down for this, but with this cast and the fantasy action premise, I have to admit that I’ve been counting down the days until Hwayugi’s premiere. I’ve been wanting a good rom-com to sink my teeth into as well, so hopefully leads Lee Seung-gi (You’re All Surrounded) and Oh Yeon-seo (My Sassy Girl) will give us a pairing to root for. By the looks of the extended teaser, they have the bickering chemistry down pat, which is always a good start.

The highlight teaser tvN has released for Hwayugi gives us some more background on how the leads first meet. Oh Yeon-seo’s character Jin Sun-mi (aka the monk character from Journey to the West), is a child when she encounters Sun Wukong (or Sohn Oh-gong, Koreanized), played by Lee Seung-gi, and Cha Seung-won’s (Hwajeong) Bull Demon King. Sohn Oh-gong doesn’t look any different from the present with his fur coat and haircut, but Cha Seung-won vaguely reminds me of Johnny Depp as Willy Wonka as he approaches baby Sun-mi for a “favor.†This favor seems to involve a certain fan that only Sun-mi can retrieve from inside a mountain, and Willy Wonka the Bull Demon King cautions her that whatever she sees inside, she must act like she can’t.

The Bull Demon King isn’t the only demon she makes a trade with, though, and we can see her making a contract with Sohn Oh-gong, so that he will protect her from the ghosts she sees. He is supposed to come to her aid whenever she calls his name, but of course, wily rascal that he is, he finds a way around it by removing the memory of his name from her head. I love that he introduces himself to her as a “totally bad guy!†Hm, I do wonder, though, whether he has anything to do with the talisman-ed yellow umbrella she carries around with her. I also like how grown-up Sun-mi talks back at him when Oh-gong reappears in her life and offers another contract. She might’ve been a helpless, scared girl before, but she’s adjusted to her abilities, or curse, as we see her throwing red beans at a ghost, which hilariously works.

Yay, I’ve been dying to see Lee Hong-ki (Modern Farmer) and Lee El (Black) in character, as a top star (also the pig demon) and Cha Seung-won’s secretary, respectively. They’re both seen in the teaser accompanying the Bull Demon King to a clothes fitting, for the outfit he’ll wear to an important deal. Lee Hong-ki’s character has a bit of a mischievous side to him as well, though his boss has him on a tight leash, warning him to not covet what’s not his.

I’m glad that it looks like there’ll be plenty of comedy involved, since that’s really where the Hong sisters shine, from pop-culture parodies like the Superstar K-esque auditions where the Bull Demon King re-meets Sun-mi, to gags like where he tries to convince himself that the worn slippers he’s holding to his face smells like lotuses, since the monk is said to smell like the flower. I have a feeling the main couple is going to provide some good comedic fodder as well, even when the romance starts picking up steam. Sun-mi misinterprets Oh-gong’s order to “close your eyes†as a death sentence (lol), when what he really meant was for her to actually keep her eyes closed so he could appear in front of her with a bang.

This teaser has done nothing to help me tamp down my expectations, but I don’t think I even care anymore. With Lee Seung-gi back playing a bad-boy monkey demon, and Cha Seung-won in his suave suits and his Best Love‘s Dokko Jin-like demeanor, I’m totally raring to explore the world the Hong sisters have created this time. Hwayugi will premiere on tvN this Saturday, December 23.

tvN’s upcoming drama “Hwayugi†has unveiled some colorful character posters for its main cast, including Lee Seung GiCha Seung WonOh Yeon Seo, and FTISLAND’s Lee Hong Ki.

Lee-Seung-Gi-Lee-Hong-Ki-Oh-Yeon-Seo.jpg

“Hwayugi†is a modern reinterpretation of the classic novel “Journey to the West.†The newly released posters clearly depict each character’s individual personality traits, and the surreal vibe of the posters reflects the fantasy drama’s supernatural elements.

Lee Seung Gi will be playing the lead role of Son Oh Gong, a mischievous troublemaker who embarks on a journey to search for light in a dark world. His poster shows him dressed in a flashy patterned shirt and wearing a roguish smile, looking like the perfect embodiment of a “self-indulgent, impish demon who isn’t afraid to taken on even the divine Jade Emperor.â€

The framed photo of a monkey in the background also hints at Son Oh Gong’s identity as a monkey demon who was born out of volcanic rock.

Cha Seung Won will play the character of Woo Ma Wang, “the refined, gentle demon who has been trying to achieve enlightenment for the past 1,000 years.†In the human world, Woo Ma Wang moonlights as Woo Hwi Chul, the head of Korea’s largest entertainment agency. His poster shows the actor wearing a stylish suit and looking both sophisticated and powerful as he confidently stares down the camera.

Oh Yeon Seo, the only woman among the five “Hwayugi†leads, will play Jin Seon Mi, a human who can see demons and evil spirits that other humans cannot. The caption describes her as a “woman who can tame Oh Gong with just one word,†hinting at the dynamic between the two characters. The actress looks elegant and poised in her poster, with a framed photo of a lotus flower representing her character’s beautiful and mysterious qualities.

FTISLAND’s Lee Hong Ki will be playing the role of Jeo Pal Gye, the “superstar demon who steals women’s hearts with his magical powers.†The character is an A-list celebrity under Lucifer Entertainment, the agency run by Woo Hwi Chul, and goes by the stage name P.K. He is both a lovable prankster and a seductive charmer, and his sly gaze in his poster hints at both characteristics.

In the poster, the actor sports an eye-catching hair color and a trendy look befitting a famous celebrity. He also holds a framed photo of a pig that represents his hidden identity as a pig demon.

Last but not least, Jang Gwang will play the character of Sa Oh Jung, “the chairman of the No. 1 company in the financial world, who is devoted to serving Oh Gong.†Amusingly, in spite of his appearance, Sa Oh Jung actually turns out to be the “youngest demon.†The actor smiles good-naturedly in his poster as he comically dusts a statue, highlighting his role as Son Oh Gong’s attendant.

The producers of the drama commented, “Not only did we try to show the charms of each of the five main characters of ‘Hwayugi,’ but we also decided to add framed photos that symbolized each character, so that [the viewers] could better understand them.â€

“Hwayugi†will be airing its first episode on December 23 at 9 p.m. KST.

Hi FranCella, thanks for your commitment to this thread! I can't wait for this drama to be released and hope it has high ratings!

Before the teasers were released, I have doubts about it as I thought it is based on the classic Chinese Journey to the West story, luckily it is only the name references and probably few similarities to the characters but the story is totally new and fresh.

I'm looking forward to how the story goes and the chemistry between the actors and actresses!

Btw, I'm a fan of OYS and now LSG is starting to grow on me, he's definitely looking more handsome after military QRLGYBO.png , he definitely has the Son Oh Gong look, surprisingly looking good with that monkey hairstyle!

Hey youre most welcome sweetie, you seems new in this forum.. welcome to OH forum lol

SunMi who could see monsters/demons since childhood, at the request of Woo MaWang, went to Five Elements Mountain where only humans can enter; she was deceived by enticement of Son OhGong who was imprisoned under the mountain, and ended up helping Son OhGong escape.

25 years later, Woo MaWang who contributed to OhGong’s escape is burning inside while living with OhGong whom he hates.

SunMi is making use of her (special) ability and running ‘Haunted & Deserted Specialty Realty’ while looking for OhGong who deceived her and disappeared.

Then one day, after learning that there’s a human who was born after receiving the blood of ‘Samzang Monk,’ which makes one invincible if one drinks it, [i’m not sure if it’s talking about drinking her blood, or eating her (flesh) as in the original story] Son OhGong and Woo MaWang become obsessed with finding (the monk)……
