Two demons and a human woman face off in 'Hwayugi'

Very cool. I love the stylish teasers that have been coming out of the Hong sisters’ newest fantasy drama Hwayugi, though they don’t really give much away in terms of plot. I’m trying not to let my hopes get too high, but it’s difficult when the main leads are Lee Seung-gi (You’re All Surrounded), Cha Seung-won (Hwajeong), and Oh Yeon-seo (My Sassy Girl), all looking badass and ready to kick some demonic butt.

First, we have Lee Seung-gi’s Sun Wukong, aka the mischievous Monkey God, who introduces himself as â€œdecadent and devilish.†I’m loving the decidedly rascally vibe he’s giving off from this short teaser, and I’m looking forward to the havoc I’m sure he’ll be wreaking in the show.

Next, we have another powerful demon in Cha Seung-won’s Bull Demon King, who descends (ascends?) from hell in the teaser, with steaming tar covering his white shoes. He might look genteel and suave on the outside, but that doesn’t change the fact that he’s the â€œking of demons,†as he declares in front of his masked followers.

And last but not least is Oh Yeon-seo, playing the rare human in Hwayugi’s mythical lineup. She wields an umbrella with a talisman attached underneath, which doubles as a weapon against evil spirits. She calls herself a â€œhuman with the ability to see demons,†and I can’t wait to see her whacking demons out of the way with her umbrella. I’m curious to see how the allegiances line up, since it looks like Lee Seung-gi and Oh Yeon-seo’s characters are facing off the same horde of demons that stood behind Cha Seung-won, which does suggest there might be some epic fighting among our leads, at least in the beginning.

I’m just excited to see promo material for Hwayugi, since it feels like forever since the project was first announced, and the cast is pretty amazing. In addition to the leads, the supporting cast includes Lee Hong-ki (Modern Farmer), Bora (Doctor Stranger), Lee Se-young (The Best Hit), and Lee El (Black), some of whom are pictured in the script read stills below.

Also, as part of the ongoing partnership between Netflix and tvN, the online streaming service has acquired the international broadcasting rights to Hwayugi, and is planning to make the series available in early 2018. Hopefully, international fans won’t have to wait too long in the new year to watch the show.

Hwayugi will premiere on December 23 to take over tvN’s weekend slot from The Most Beautiful Goodbye in the World, which is set to follow Revolutionary Love.

Cha Seung Won Talks About Reuniting With Lee Seung Gi For “Hwayugiâ€

In a recent interview, actor Cha Seung Won spoke about the upcoming drama “Hwayugi†and working with Lee Seung Gi for the second time

The two actors, who first appeared together in SBS’s “You’re All Surrounded†in 2014, recently reunited for tvN’s “Hwayugi.†The drama marks both actors’ return to the small screen — “Hwayugi†is Lee Seung Gi’s first drama since his discharge from the military in October, and it is also Cha Seung Won’s first drama in two years.

Cha Seung Won praised the positive energy that the younger actor brought to the set, saying, “Lee Seung Gi joined [the drama] immediately after his discharge, so he is full of spirit. Although our characters are at odds within the drama, we work well together, so the filming set has a great atmosphere.â€

“Hwayugi†also marks the reunion of Cha Seung Won with director Park Hong Kyun and the screenwriters known as the Hong Sisters, all of whom worked together for the hit MBC drama “The Greatest Love.†Remarkably, Lee Seung Gi made a cameo appearance in that drama as well.

Filming for “Hwayugi,†which began in October, is still ongoing. Cha Seung Won commented, “The filming is going smoothly. There are a lot of scenes that use computer graphics, so even after the completion of filming, a lot of post-production will be necessary. I wish that we had more time [for filming] and feel regretful that we don’t.â€

He also added with a laugh, “Personally, because it’s the dead of winter, I’m worried about the cold. I hope that we’re able to finish without any problems and without getting too worn out physically.â€

This tvN drama will begin airing on December 23 at 9 p.m. KST.

Lee El Is A Charismatic Secretary In New “Hwayugi†Stills

Lee-El.jpg

On December 8, upcoming tvN drama “Hwayugi†released new stills of Lee El looking chic and sophisticated.

“Hwayugi†is a modern take on the classic Chinese novel, “Journey to the West.†In the drama, Lee El plays Ma Ji Young, the secretary of Woo Hwi Chul (played by Cha Seung Won), the CEO of an entertainment company. Equipped with her stellar fashion sense and cool personality, her charisma is on such a high level that it almost matches her boss’s.

In the stills released, Lee El exudes a professional yet stylish aura as she smiles ever so slightly, while her blood-red lips and crossed arms say that she won’t take any nonsense from anybody.

Lee El previously played Samshin, the goddess of birth and fate, on the hit tvN drama “Goblin†and currently plays a mysterious, beautiful doctor on OCN’s “Black.†As she exuded different kinds of charisma in each of her previous roles, many are curious to see how she will interpret her role as Ma Ji Young.

A source from the drama stated, “The role of Ma Ji Young is one where she must always be next to and assist Cha Seung Won, and so we needed an actress who had just as much charisma as Cha Seung Won. Lee El’s transformation into Ma Ji Young is one that captures everyone’s attention in the room with merely her presence.â€

The drama will air its first episode on December 23 at 9 p.m. KST.

Hwayugi brings on the mystical mystery in new stills

hwayyy17.jpg

I’m ready for this modern mythical fantasy drama to be my early Christmas present! Hwayugi has released shots where we can get our first glimpse of some of the cast of the new Hong sisters’ drama, starring Lee Seung-gi (You’re All Surrounded). He plays the monkey god, Sun Wukong, originally based on the character in the Chinese classic novel Journey to the West.

His counterpart, the Bull Demon King, will be played by Cha Seung-won(Hwajeong), who will be a gentle but vain entertainment company CEO in this retelling. And the monk from the source material has been reinvented as a female real-estate mogul who can see spirits and resells houses known for their negative energy, and she’ll be played by Oh Yeon-seo (My Sassy Girl).

The drama will tell the journey of how this threesome joins together to banish the darkness in this world, and helps it grow toward the light. In the novel, Sun Wukong was exiled from heaven because he was too prideful, but remains a mischievous, incorrigible character, and Lee Seung-gi seems to be right at home playing him. And now I’m more interested in Cha Seung-won’s character after these stills because of his wacky Willy Wonka getup.

hwayyy16.jpg

His in-drama talent agency Lucifer manages top stars like PK, the nation’s top celeb, played by Lee Hong-ki (Modern Farmer), who is based on the Pig God from the novel. Then there’s Yoon Bo-ra (Doctor Stranger) who plays sexy star Alice, originally the son of the Dragon King who foolishly handed over a treasure of the Dragon Palace to a female thief. When he was caught, he was expelled from the Dragon Palace and on the edge of despair, but the Bull Demon King found him and gave him a second chance to live in a woman’s body.

Cha Seung-won is aided by Lee El (Black), who plays his faithful personal secretary and right-hand woman. *fervently prays* Dramagods, please make this loveline happen. But to be honest, the best stills are of Lee Se-young (The Best Hit) who looks downright creepy but beautiful at the same time. She plays a zombie girl who was murdered secretly and buried in a godforsaken hill somewhere, but somehow through the power of Oh Yeon-seo’s blood, she arises from the dead and begins to search for her savior-creator.

I’m not quite sure how zombies will fit into this modern retelling, but I like the sound of her character. Because her brain is rotted, she doesn’t know who she is or how she died, but like the typical schoolgirl, she’s very concerned with maintaining her appearance especially as things start to decay off her body. Lols, she’s described as a quirky and cute type of zombie.

Well, this mythical romance looks fantastic so far! Saturday-Sunday drama Hwayugi will premiere on December 23 on tvN.
