This is so upsetting. Apparently it was Cha Seung Won that requested to halt the filming ... understabdable since he's the senior there and glad he did. If the filming conditions isn't safe for staffs (and actors as well) this is a huge mess. The sad thing is that the drama is really good and it's so sad to see it turning this way. I'll pray they punish the ones responsible but not cancel the drama. I'm seriously inlove with up. :(

I hope something good can be learned from this incident though, especially with a halt and 3rd party involvement. I can also only imagine how traumatising witnessing the accidnet or uncomfortable it would be to go on set not sure if your personal safety has been thought about carefully. Giving a few more weeks of filming to make it semi pre-produced may, may have avoided such an incident since time for safety would have been allowed.

Troubled Hwayugi pre-empts episodes in wake of accidents

hwayugi_10.jpg

It has been a pretty awful launch for tvN’s big buzz drama Hwayugi, and now the production is taking a week off to regroup and get back on track, with this weekend’s planned airings of Episodes 3 and 4 being pushed back to next weekend instead. That means no episodes till the new year, when they’ll resume with their normal schedule.

The troubled launch was a shame since the problems were all behind-the-scenes; the story itself got off to a strong start and general positive reception. It’s just that the production has been hit with issue after issue, and that rather overshadows the narrative side of the show.

The first sign of trouble came in Episode 2, which aired this past Sunday, which included scenes with improperly edited CG sequences. Stunt wires were left in frame and computer graphics weren’t completed, making a fight scene full of supposed ghostly demons look like a choreographed aerobic exercise with stunt dudes instead. In another case, a magical painting was shown with the green screen still in place, rather than the moving picture originally intended. Worst of all was when the episode cut out early, mid-scene, with no ending.

These snafus were cleaned up in the rebroadcast the following day, and initially the production announced that they would only pre-empt one episode this weekend (moving Episode 4 one week back). But then news arose of an accident on set wherein a staffer fell from the ceiling while hanging a lighting fixture; the accident occurred on December 23 (premiere day), and it was reported that the staffer suffered paralysis in the lower half of his body.

In response, the Ministry of Employment and Labor sent a labor supervisor to inspect the set. Moreover, now a police investigation has been opened as well: The company representing the injured staffer, MBC Art, has pressed charges with the police against Hwayugi’s production house, JS Pictures, as well as its CEO and art director, for criminal negligence resulting in injury and also for threats and intimidation.

As a result, tvN announced today that it would be postponing broadcasts by a week in order to inspect the production environment. A rep apologized for the trouble and stated that work would be done to ensure improved conditions and future safety on sets.

Following last week’s postponement of episode 3 and the announcement that the next two episodes would be airing this week, the “Hwayugi†broadcast schedule is up in the air once again, with pending investigations by the police and the Ministry of Employment and Labor (MOEL). Depending on the results of the MOEL investigation, “Hwayugi†filming may even be suspended.

January 2, a source from “Hwayugi†said, “This week’s broadcast of ‘Hwayugi’ has not yet been confirmed. The decision will be made following the police investigation to take place on January 3, so everyone is currently on standby.â€

Previously, the National Union of Mediaworkers released a statement regarding their inspections of the “Hwayugi†set following the accident that occurred on December 23.

According to the union, following the accident, the drama production had been continuing to film, having carried out no action or preventative safety measures. “First, though the part of the ceiling that fell as the accident happened has been repaired, there are places where the wood supporting the ceiling has parted. Rather than rebuilding or reinforcing the set, they are continuing to film with patchwork repairs, leaving open the possibility for a second accident or injury to a staff member or actor.†The statement also addressed various other issues, such as dark, narrow walkways, and cable, planks, and other materials strewn about on the floor, making the set a safety hazard in case of an accident or fire.

After the release of the statement, MBC Art submitted an official complaint to police regarding negligence resulting in injury and possible threats or coercion in the workplace.

A source from the police said on January 2, “The complaint has been processed, and we are preparing for investigation. January 3, we will be speaking with witnesses. Because the degree of the victim’s injury is severe, that will be the focus of our investigation.†The source added that the police investigation has no bearing on whether or not the drama will be prohibited from filming: “Resumption or suspension of drama filming is under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Employment and Labor (MOEL).â€

The MOEL will be carrying out their additional investigations today and tomorrow, after which they will make a decision about whether to allow continued filming on the “Hwayugi†set.

‘A Korean Odyssey’ may face further delay

Trouble-ridden drama “A Korean Odyssey†may face another bump in the road, as the already-postponed episodes three and four are facing possibly yet another delay.

On Tuesday local media reported that the tvN show -- for Saturdays and Sundays -- may not be aired this week. The show was put on delay for at least a week last week, after a staff member was injured while working on set.

The Ministry of Employment and Labor has commenced an investigation into the incident, as will the police.

MBC Art, which employs the staff in question, has recently filed charges against the show’s production company for professional negligence and threats against an employee.

The production team is reported to be on stand-by, ahead of the police investigation that will start on Wednesday.

In an official statement, officials said nothing has been set yet. “We will notify (the media) after things are confirmed. We already said the show will be delayed for at least a week.†

The accident had further fueled criticism against the show that had already been bashed for its poor quality.

During the episode that aired on Dec. 24, the production staff failed to digitally remove wires attached to the actors, leaving them exposed to viewers. The fiasco was capped off with an extensive commercial break and the show abruptly ended mid-episode.

The incident had highlighted the production environment of TV dramas in Korea, which many had argued are inadequate to produce a quality show.

One of the first problems was the hectic schedule. The show denied such claims that the production was rushed, saying that the shooting started early October. It did, however, admit that that computer graphics for the second episode – which aired Dec. 24 -- was completed later than expected.

Another problem was that the show’s lead Lee Seung-gi joined the crew after he was discharged from his mandatory military duties on Oct. 31, nearly a month after the show started shooting. This would have been a problem, as the show featured him heavily.

In an interview with the local media, culture critic Ha Jae-geun said that the production team’s optimism about the schedule would have led to the production fiasco.

“They (the producers) should’ve A.) made sure Lee joined the crew on time, or B.) postponed the show, but they did nothing,†he said.

Lee pointed out that such a rushed process is rampant in Korean TV.

Director Park Hong-kyun, who is at the helm of “A Korean Odyssey,†is infamous for forcing his actors and staff through a rushed schedule. Actor Ji Sung, who starred in Park’s 2011 drama “New Heart,†revealed in a past interview that he was sleep-deprived for 30 straight days.

Actors have also voiced concerns over the so-called “page-script,†referring to the script distributed to the actors in pages, containing only a fraction of the show. The rest of the show is written as the show is being shot, with changes being made on the fly. This often causes problems in both the acting -- as they have little time to prepare their scenes -- and continuity errors.

Like if the story will turn bad and we'll suffer watching it, then please keep it. But if its good and they improved working condition, then dont cancel it pls!

sighh its hard to expect whats happening right now

This article though is about a tvn variety show, its also mentioned bout Hwayugi. ohdearplz.png

The broadcasting station gave no specific reason as to why the press conference was canceled other than, "It was canceled due to unavoidable circumstances." However, the 'V Live' broadcast with the show's cast including Yoon Yeo JungLee Seo JinJung Yoo MiPark Seo Joon, Na Young Suk PD, Lee Jin Joo PD, and scriptwriter Kim Dae Joo, will still air as scheduled on January 4 at 1PM KST, just an hour before the planned press conference.

The media suspects that the grave staff injury on the set of tvN's 'Hwayugi' is behind the sudden cancelation. Previously, Korea's National Union of Mediaworkers announced a press conference regarding an update on the staff member's fall accident, for this exact time, on January 4 at 2PM KST.
