THE RAMPAGE from EXILE TRIBE - 100degrees

The singers have distinctive voices, and their company is good at finding those. But one thing I find recurring in hip hop style songs by some of the male groups from LDH is that the singers' voices tend to be "too lyrical" for the instrumental melody. I'm not saying they're aren't competent as artists, but probably a more "hammer-like" vocal delivery, a deeper voice register, etc are best matches for the instrumentals of this song.

Knocking Knocking, a previous work from the group, balances that aspect I mentioned by alternating between more melodic vocals and a rap-like delivery when the instrumental needs it the most.

That currently seems to be the case with the more active groups; The Second, Saindaime JSB and Generations.

I don't recall it being this persistent with EXILE.

However, I do recall being delighted that Atsushi would embark on a solo career. And even though he doesn't sell that well in comparison to what he does in the group, it's still a delight to hear.

!!!! I read your lines and you know what it isn't as persistent with EXILE imo? Because EXILE never fully embraced that hip hop bad boy persona the other groups use and reuse. EXILE's music somehow manages to best complement and fit Atsushi and Takahiro's vocals. I mean, even EXILE's corniest attempts at emulating the "bad boy aesthetic" aren't accompanied by vocals with that "jarring" quality I was assigning to this particular THE RAMPAGE track. EXILE's bad boy essence is (almost) just seen in their choice of wardrobe and choreography more than anything else, I dare say.

Some say that Atsushi's solo venture is like him getting rid of the "shackles" (individual creativity-wise) named EXILE, and in 2015-2016, when EXILE wasn't in hiatus, Atsushi's solo records sold as much as EXILE's. EXILE's sales declined, while Atsushi's peaked. I don't fully agree with the shackles part myself because it's simplistic, but at least the man is veeeeeery happy with his personal and musical advances as a soloist and as the longest-serving active member of EXILE.

Agree

But I think a lot of this has to do with the audience they want to reach out to. Today, the young music fans are not like what they were in the late-90s enjoying the urban sounds and sensutalities.

That's nice to know because I am biased. His concerts have been amazing, and seeing Shun make an appearance and sing with him again was fantastic.

Aaaaaah, yes!! Demographics. I almost forgot about them! That's maybe the reason EXILE aren't that huge anymore... I mean, look at their music. Compare their music from 2003, 2009 and 2015 and it's like having three groups in one (although I happen to like almost all their eras).

Atsushi's solo music (except Zange, composed by the excellent Joe Hisaishi) has been never my cup of tea, although he looks happy and also his Instagram posts paint him as an actually humble and geniune person.

And also, is that a BoA signature what I see? Because BoA is life!!

Ditto.

....but to me no transition has been as rough as that of The Second. I loved their debut RnB album [when they were JSB] but they switched gear completely to pop. I swear it was a great short-lived era, almost unheard of too. It deserves more love.

I think I would enjoy his material much more if I [clears throat] understood the language.

I just can't resist his voice. I enjoy his live performances because of the amount of passion that he projects across. It's so beautiful and moving

Yes, it is the Mighty Boa.

I also like that we also have location in common - almost.

Ooooh, technically they're different groups. Nidaime J Soul Brothers didn't include AKIRA and also had Naoto and Naoki from EXILE/3JSB, but they lacked enough commercial success to live long as a group (they only lasted two years in the market). Even though, they're still a fandom favourite at least in the circles I'm involved in because of that R&B quality in their sound.

In fact, Atsushi is, even according to surveys, one of the most loved Japanese vocalists. He has that melodic tone that makes his songs so special, plus lyric writing.

Ahhh, BoA, I love her dearly. To debut in a harsh industry at the young age of 13 and be loved by so many.

Ahahaha, yes! Fellow Irish residents! But you're from the North I guess?

That's what I meant...

Yes. I'm north from where you are, but not Northern Ireland.

With Namie Amuro retirements news surfacing the net, I am not looking forward for the day will come when its BoA who steps down. I love her too much hence why I am selfish in my thinking...
