Would it be weird if my friend wanted to give me a Korean name?

I’m going to study abroad in Korea in a few months for almost a year. My friend wanted to give me a Korean name to use there (Eunji...huehuehue I love it so much! He even gave me his last name lol).Would it be weird to use a Korean name even though I’m a foreigner?

hmmm i wouldn't use it as your regular name unless your real name is difficult to say in korean but you can give people both options also! and it wouldn't be super weird if you used it regularly, but i think koreans would ask you what your real name is if it's obvious you're a foreigner...

btw good luck! í™”ì´íŒ…~ ê·¸ ì´ë¦„ì€ ì´ë»ìš”

No it's normal especially if your name is hard to pronounce or spell.

A Korean grandma at the Korean mart I always go to calls me eunhye, I was like that's neat and sweet of her to come up with a name for me but it just ended just being a literal name translation lol

I'm not Korean so I'm not sure, I have heard of Koreans giving foreigners Korean names (in Korea) before though. I remember Amber was given the Korean name Eunyoung (which she never uses lol). I mean, if an actual Korean is giving you the go ahead, he will have more knowledge of what is acceptable than any of us on here who aren't from the culture !

I don't think it's weird. If you have an unusual name or a hard to pronounce name, Koreans would probably prefer to call you by an easier name, but it's also best to mention your real name, see what they prefer. A Korean friend also told me maybe I should get a Korean name if I ever visit Korea, since my name's close to a Korean swear word when you mispronounce it.  imstupid.png

I think it would be fine, especially since you're going there to study. I've known many foreign exchange students who chose or were given a different name during their time studying here, so I think it would be alright in other countries as well, especially if your real name would be difficult to pronounce
