I think it's because the one who voices him was Yoshimasa Hosoya (?) I never feel so comfortable with a character before, and I treat him like a true buddy.

You could probably watch the first series instead of playing the first game, but it pales in comparison. In order to watch the Danganronpa 3 series, you need to have played the second game or the events won't make sense.
