How do you study for an exam?

I like to highlight stuff in my book. I make super messy notes in class where I just write everything the teacher writes, then at home I spend time making them neat and I crosscheck with the stuff I highlighted so I only study the most important details.

I'm actually a really bad student and only did this in my last year, but it saved my grades. Having a neat environment is really important btw.

Usually I reread notes/the textbook and go through flash cards if the exam requires memorization of definitions/equations

However if I procrastinate long enough, I just accept my fate and go to sleep

I don't. Lol.

But seriously. I don't study very often, but when I do, I try to write down all things I can remember. However, the things that I don't remember, that's what I focus on. I highlight my book or notebook and try to memorize it. I don't do flash cards because they take time and I'm lazy af, but I think it could work for you. Don't study when you're hungry or tired from something else, trust me. Also, I don't believe in pulling all-nighters. I advice you to sleep early so that your brain is not going to malfunction the next morning. A healthy body is an efficient body, so take care of your health first before anything else.

For readings, I would highlight and underlying. Occasionally I would write in the margins, but not too much. As for my lectures, my professors would post their power point presentations online for each class, so I never wrote down that stuff since I could get it later. I would just focus on what they were actually saying, writing down some other major points/examples.

I would then later type up my notes along with the pp stuff and anything I wanted to make anote from my reading in a word document. I would just have to review everything once before my exams to remember it all. Which I know is not the usual way of things, but everyone is different.

Also - by writig notes in class instead of typing them on my laptop, I was not tempted to do something else during a boring lecture. Also, typing it up later reinforced the information in my mind. Just something to consider.

Highlighting is possibly the most useless thing you can do while studying. On the point that, a lot of people highlight useless stuff and also, they never review what they highlighted. Also, people take notes a long side their highlights making me wonder what the point of highlighting was.

If you are studying and this is a class, read the book prior to class. Go to class, listen to the professor and take notes and then, review the notes at the end of the day. If you can consistently do this. Come exam time, you will barely need to study.

If you are self studying for a certification. There is a grand debate about note taking. Some recommend it, others don't do it as it is time consuming and slow and doesn't help with retention.

The things that effectively work.

If it's math. Do as many problems as possible and take note of what you don't understand.

If it's a course where memorization is required like anatomy. You can build a memory palace or make flashcards and review flashcards.

Courses like English, you just have to know the book, and this case, I actually recommend highlighting the book for important quotes that you will use for your essays. That is the only time, I say highlight.

During my study time I play piano music in the background coz it helps me relax. I highlight a lot and take notes on a flash card. The night before exams and in the morning I read the flash cards.

I take 5-10 minutes break after a study session (45 min), during the break I do light exercises or open my window for fresh air.

I think you know that for the memorization exam, you have to memorize everything spaced a few days before the exam. So yes, flash card, etc., but use your creativity to memorize your stuff, do not try to brute force the information into your brain, this usually does not last long. It is easier to reconstruct information with a funky analogy than with nothing.

For grammar and stuff, do more exercices and redo those already done faster, you may be surprise sometime.

For math and understanding, read about the concept and stuff, but don't take too much time trying to understand before doing the exercices. Just go to the exercices quickly, and if you can't do it, than just come back to the reading.

I think everybody pretty much know how to study for exam, the problem is just that everybody is cramming the day before. If you were actually fairly updated in your study (I know sometime it's very hard), you should not have problem. So the question is more : how can I stop procrastinating until the last day and start doing my shit before. So first thing, reserve yourself an amount of time to study for something like 3 hours. After, do your homework, study while listening to songs that you like (not like mozart or some shit) so you can enter the focus zone. If you're worry about not being able to efficiently study while listening to music, don't worry, you'll eventually remove your earphones when you'll start struggling, but you'll already be in your work session, so just keep the flow going. If you're frustrated because you don't understand something, just calm down, don't go on onehallyu, it's because you don't know/understand something prior to that concept so just go back and read some stuff, or just go online too. If you slept 8 hours but feel sleepy, it's only because you find your stuff boring so put your earphones on and put some anime soundtrack so you can go back to your zone. Try to do as much as possible, prepare some questions for your teacher and ask them, ask your friends to unblock yourself and try the NEXT DAY because yes you have more than one day to study lol you don't need to cram every time. (maybe sometime)
