Korean related question: can you drop honorific or formal way of speaking to someone who is much older than you but you’re good friends with?

It depends on the age gap (1-3 years). If you're younger you shouldn't ask them because it's considered rude, if the one who's older thinks that you're close enough they might offer you to talk in banmal. You have to be very close though. Dropping honorifics is another thing. Sadly, there will always be a shrift in dynamics if you're friends with an older person.

If you're a foreigner dropping formal lango and honorifics is a lot easier and isn't as strict.

Since the other person is 8 years older, the respectful thing to do is for him/her to offer you to speak informally instead of you asking.

However if you are not Korean then you might not be held to super strict honorific standards. Either way I recommend waiting for that person to invite you to speak informally.
