Super weird question

So I know lots of Americans (friends and family, sometimes myself) who frequently use subtitles when watching British TV shows. Does this work in reverse? Like do British (or I guess Australian or New Zealand people-I don't know what people from NZ call themselves-Kiwis mb?) people ever have to do this when watching American TV shows? I should add that this is something most of the people I know only have to do this when the characters have a thicker accent, so I imagine it would work vice versa (maybe if they had a Southern or New England accent). Super long explanation, but I am genuinely curious.

I'm British and I use them for British Tv as well and it's not accents that trip me when it comes to English speaking programs from across the world, my country included, it's the infuriating and incessant need for program makers to have the background music louder than the actual dialogue.
