 ~Plot~

OCN, home to some of dramaland’s grittiest crime dramas, has posted updates on its upcoming spinoff series Bad Guys: City of Evil with a new 15-second teaser clip and stills, giving us our first look at our baddies in action.

Like the original, this spinoff is centered around a group of criminals, forced together to track down even worse villains. At the head of our team, we have Park Joong-hoon (My Dear Desperado), who plays a prosecutor willing to fight dirty to capture his targets. He’ll be aided by rookie prosecutor Kim Mu-yeol(My Beautiful Bride), who is clueless at the beginning but begins to understand the dark underbelly of crime as he works with these bad guys to catch others.

Joo Jin-mo (Woman With a Suitcase) plays a former violent mobster who quit after a tragic incident, who has carried this heavy hidden burden of his past ever since

While Ji-soo will play a man who sacrifices himself in order to save his family, and goes to prison to serve someone else’s sentence. But then he discovers that it was a trap set by the mob from the start, and he’ll undergo a 180 degree transformation and vow to live his life differently. It sounds like a great character with a strong arc, and after playing brawling high school rebels and a homicide detective, I’m sure he’s up to the demands of the action-packed role. ..(source: DBeans)..

First teaser trailer added for OCN drama series “Bad Guys 2†starring Park Joong-HoonJoo Jin-MoYang Ik-June and Kim Moo-Yul. As the title suggests, the drama series is a sequel to 2014 OCN drama series “Bad Guys,†but with a new cast playing new characters. The new cast is led by Park Joong-Hoon playing Prosecutor Woo Je-Moon. He recruits the bad guys who will work as a team to punish violent criminals.

His team includes Joo Jin-Mo playing Heo Il-Hoo. He is a former mafia gang member. Yang Ik-June plays Detective Jang Sung-Cheol. Judging by his still image and his brief appearance in the teaser trailer, one may infer that the elevator may not go all the way to the top floor for him. Lastly, Kim Moo-Yul will play Rookie Prosecutor No Jin-Pyeong.

“Bad Guys 2†first airs December, 2017 in South Korea.

Joo Jin-mo and Ji-soo tap into their dark side for Bad Guys: City of Evil

badguys2-teaser102313.jpg

I’ve been looking forward to seeing Ji-soo take on this antihero sort of role ever since his casting news came out, so I’m ecstatic to finally see him in character for the OCN spinoff Bad Guys: City of Evil. To be honest, it took me a few seconds to realize that it was actually him in the teaser, so props to both the directing and his acting for transforming so drastically, especially after his last drama role in Strong Woman Do Bong-soon. A character teaser has also been released for Joo Jin-mo (Woman With a Suitcase), who is chillingly convincing as a “reformed†ex-con, though the body count in this clip might indicate otherwise.

It’ll be interesting to see what motivates Joo Jin-mo to join the titular “bad guys,†since he isn’t incarcerated at the beginning of the drama. Instead, he’s hidden his shady past as a former mobster, and runs a small restaurant in a local market. Though, if his character is any indication, his past might catch up to him: Intercut with snippets of him lopping off a fish’s head are the downed, bloody bodies strewn about in his restaurant. Is it just me, or are those noises of him hacking at the fish super unsettling?

Park Joong-hoon (My Dear Desperado) remarks that “this area is a sewer he’s created,†scoffing at the idea of the former gangster trying to live quietly. He goes on to say, “The world won’t let him.†One of the beat-up henchmen gets up and tries to run out of the restaurant, prompting Joo Jin-mo to throw a knife, which embeds itself right in front of the terrified man. Ever since I first watched Joo Jin-mo in Fashion ’70s, I’ve always thought the actor had oodles of charisma, and I’m so excited to see him channel that into a less-than-clean role.

It’s harder to tell whether Ji-soo’s role will be quite as dark, but seeing as how he ended up in jail for a crime he didn’t even commit, I’m going to hazard a guess that there’s a lot of pent-up anger in his character. Labeled the “hyung support†who has been left with only thoughts of revenge, we see Ji-soo keeping in shape while incarcerated, doing a perfect, two-handed plank with his feet in the air. My abs are cramping in sympathy just watching him. Park Joong-hoon introduces him as someone who took responsibility for another’s crime, and got hundreds of millions of won in return. He ends the trailer by narrating that “those eyes won’t betray you.â€

Though I was initially a little disappointed that the second Bad Guys would be a spinoff rather than a sequel, after seeing these promos, I have to admit that I’m quite excited to watch these new characters populate this particularly crime-rampant, noir world. Joining criminals Joo Jin-mo and Ji-soo are the morally gray law enforcement figures, played by Park Joong-hoon, Kim Mu-yeol (My Beautiful Bride), and Yang Ik-joon (Mystery Queen).

Bad Guys: City of Evil will premiere on OCN in December.

Prosecutors and detective fit right in with Bad Guys in City of Evil

badguys2-teaser11416.jpg

This feels so epic, and my attempts to tamp down my expectations for this show are failing miserably. To follow up on the character teasers that came out for Joo Jin-mo (Woman With a Suitcase) and Ji-soo (Strong Woman Do Bong-soon), upcoming OCN crime thriller Bad Guys: City of Evil has released three new ones for the rest of the motley crew that’ll be the central focus of the show. And instead of ex-cons, we’ve got two prosecutors and the most unfit detective I’ve ever seen, in Park Joong-hoon (My Dear Desperado), Kim Mu-yeol (My Beautiful Bride), and Yang Ik-joon (Mystery Queen).

First, we have genius prosecutor Kim Mu-yeol, who we see at his desk, in the midst of making some kind of decision with a USB in hand. Park Joon-hoon narrates that Kim Mu-yeol’s character went to a no-name college in the hicks, with no influential family members to help advance his career: “This bastard with no connections has just one thing, his head on his shoulders.†Kim Mu-yeol finally comes to a decision and switches out the USB with one in his drawer. He’s described as an expert strategist, and if he sets his mind to it, “He can turn lies into truth.â€

Yang Ik-joon’s detective character is of a rather different breed of law enforcement, and I can see him being a total wild card in the field. The character teaser begins with him randomly smoking in an empty bathtub, in what looks like an abandoned apartment. Park Joong-hoon gives a laundry list of the detective’s crimes, from gambling to drugs to taking bribes. He drily observes that, “He doesn’t have a purpose to living. I think he just lives ‘cause he was born.†I mean, whoa at those close-up shots at his crazy faces. We should be rooting for him, right?

And then, last but certainly not least, is Park Joong-hoon, who is apparently playing the equivalent of Kim Sang-joon’s role in the original series. The prosecutor attempts to bring in a suspect, played by Kim Hong-pa (Suspicious Partner), who says, “I won’t go down so easily. There are promises to collect on.†This is precisely the type of corruption that has Park Joong-hoon disillusioned with the system: “Law? Justice? Order? I won’t catch you using them.†It’s not exactly a hero walk, but I got chills seeing the four “bad guys†and their leader walking down the corridor lined with men in handcuffs. The teaser ends with Park Joong-hoon narrating, “I will drag down those high-up bastards into the gutter.†Love it.

Bad Guys: City of Evil will premiere next month on OCN.
