why did some people try to demonize bighit's fan survey?

this has probably been discussed to death already, but like, i still don't really get why some people tried to make it seem as though the only reason they released that survey was for the purpose of milking/using fans. but the survey legitimately wasn't even about that?

It's quite obvious that this was a consumer data grab. bighit wants to know the demographic bts is reaching and what certain groups of fans are more likely to do and like.  how can anyone have the audacity to twist this into some evil scheme?

bts talks about a lot of things in their music and they supply a lot of contents. knowing what is reaching who is pretty important info, wouldn't you think?

people will literally go to the end of the world to find shit to throw @ bts and bighit. it's nothing new. i think the survey is a good way to learn about fans thoughts, getting proper critism about their latest releases and what the fans like more, what caught their eyes etc. also where fans are located over the world (perhaps for future world tours lmao). people are just bitter trying to find any chance to ruin it. some were even saying bighit went too far asking about fans mental health lmao saying there's minors answering. as if minors aren't already all over the internet being exposed to things they shouldn't be watching. literally just trying to find any reason to defame bighit and bts

Exactly. It's one thing to acknowledge the question is indeed person and can come some users uncomfortable, but trying to develop some elaborate scheme BigHit mightive planned when BH probably just typed the question and kept on going? That was too much.

I think the "how depressed are you" question caused quite a lot of people uneasiness and discomfort, which is totally understandable imo.

it wasn't even worded that way tho. i can understand people being uncomfortable for whatever personal reason they might have, but the fact of the matter is non-fans took a 29 page survey JUST to find something to try to drag bts/bighit for when it really wasn't that serious.

All of this because of a mistranslation lol

the depression/anxiety questions shouldn't be there

but why not? and i'd really like to know you're opinion on this, i'm not being sarcastic. people always say we shouldn't stigmatize mental illness. it's a real thing that real people suffer from and certain bts members themselves have openly talked about it before. i can understand it being a touchey subject, but it's not something that should be ignored for the purpose of making sure there's absolutely no chance anyone will ever be slightly uncomfortable.

It feels like they are trying to use the fact that their fans might have mental problems. If they are going to make music talking about mental problems then they should do it because they want to not because the majority of their fans have them. Like you said it's something real that happens to real life people and it's quite messed up if they use it for that reason. But then again I may be wrong so who knows

There's nothing wrong with the survey tho, people just want to find a reason to complain. The depression question (which was a mistranslation) is weird, but I don't think it's that big of a deal because you don't have to take the quiz, the quiz is also anonymous. I don't think Big Hit will publish something that says "Jenny from Nigeria has depression" because that would be fucked up and if it really bothered you that much send an email to Big Hit about.

I think the results would be used in multitude of ways and a great way to know the fans.

The question was "I see myself as someone who is depressed, blue" not "are you diagnosed with clinical depression" not "how severe is your clinical depression".  I'd like to remind you (and everyone else continuing to misread that question) that "depressed" is not limited to its psychiatric meaning, but on its own means "sad" and "gloomy" (which is the intended meaning as shown in other translations of the survey). If you look at the other survey questions for context, it's even clearer (e.g., "I see myself as someone who is talkative," "I see myself as someone who is full of energy," "I see myself as someone who gets nervous easily.") As someone else noted above, it's standard personality questions.

I can't say I really agree with either of you. There was upset about something that just plain wasn't even there.

They think that if more people answer the question saying they’re sad (or depressed—I don’t know how it was phrased in Korean and some are saying it’s a mistranslation), BH could use that info to make more songs to appeal to that demographic for profit. I.e. being exploitative in their eyes. That is if you think BH/BTS have unsavory intentions, which fits a narrative many have had about the group since INU era. All I know is that BTS have been making serious personal songs since pre-debut (and childhood) and that the INU accusations are BS. People who think they have bad motivations will always think they do and those who see sincerity there will question that narrative. I don’t know exactly what their intentions were with that question; can’t exactly ask them.

People just took a screenshot of 3 questions out of a 29 pages survey and made it into something that it's not to fit their own narrative. Anything to make a controversy out of something BigHit/BTS does lmao.

Those are the 15 questions included in the survey and they're basically a copy paste of every personality test you can find and take around the internet. I've took a bunch before and those type of questions are always included but i don't see anyone making a fuss about it. It's not even about depression as a clinical condition, it's literally about mood. It's 100% anonymous. You can leave a neutral reply. And no one is forced to do it if they're uncomfortable with it.

they already have songs talking about mental illnesses. they also have 2 members in particular who have been open about discussing their mental health. it's honestly offensive that people are jumping to the worst conclusions about them without even bothering to find out if this is something personal to them as well.

anyway it's also all a mistranslation.

Bts has made plenty of songs regarding depression and loneliness. I really don't see the problem if they make more songs about those issues. It might be really comforting to those fans to hear Bts speak on those issues and share their struggles more. It's nothing forced and it's not a crime to do so. If Bts has never made any songs regarding those and just randomly decided to do so after this survey then I'd be concerned about exploitation and all that mess.

Thanks for the context. Imagine that.
