Do you think BTS would have achieved their current Billboard achievements & sales if they were never invited to the BBMAs?

I know that the whole BBMA media frenzy saw a huge influx of new fans. A lot of K-Pop fans say it's an irrelevant social media award but what strikes me is that the same event and that award got them the attention needed for people to check them out (again, I think it's an ARMY-BTS dynamic - ARMY came to the event in full force to support which piqued the interest of the mediamen during the event which is why BTS got heaps of press, their award is not normally presented during the main awards ceremony but they're the first to break Bieber's streak so it was done onstage)

So I was in convo with another K-Pop fan (multifandom) and she commented in passing "I doubt they would have charted this easily on Billboard if they never got all that attention during the BBMAs, did you see how fast their MV views and Twitter followers grew right after winning Top Social Artist? If you look at comments so many new fans too..."

This made me think, do you reckon this would have been the results if BTS were never invited to the event or was that "irrelevant social media award" a life-changer for them?

Do you think they would have gotten in by Her though or much later?

later

maybe bb200 achievement yeah it could have been possible

but I think for hot100 we would have charted maybe like low 90s and then charted out next week

it helped a lot more than people anticipated. one of the main reasons they charted like they did in the hot 100 was streaming and i don't think it would be nearly as high without the bbmas. spotify adding them to all those playlists has to do with that too (i'm not sure if bighit pays for that? but if they do i doubt they would've bothered if they didn't see bts' potential with the bbmas imo)

BBMAs sure helped them a lot but let's not forget that WINGS charted at #26 on BB200 and SD was at #15 on the Bubbling chart during the Grammy week, and these were all before the BBMAs. So they'd have definitely done better than before the BBMAs, that's for sure. Not as high as #7 or #67 but much better than WINGS or SD.

No - they would've charted but not this high

But also, it wasn't just the act of going to the BBMAs. Any boyband could've attended and not gotten the reception and hype that they got. As always, BTS was in the right place at the right time, but ultimately, it was them who made it work.  The sheer noise of their fans made them hard to ignore, but they charmed their way through the press and RM's speech was a memorable moment.

I agree with the general consensus here, it would've happened regardless but not all at once like this. Their fanbase is organic and grew every comeback, but the bbmas appearance really piqued intl media attention.

Considering that I've seen the fandom grow after that exponentially, I'd say that yeah, it had a big role in exposing them to the media more and getting more interested in them. I know several people personally who got curious and fell into the BTS hole right after checking out their interviews. That being said I agree w/ whatever everyone else said here - it would've happened, but not this soon and they wouldn't have charted this high. ARMYs can really do anything once they set their mind to it, huh.

i think they could've still achieved it without the bbma just not right now. bbma gave their popularity quite a boost tho so they achieved that much in so little time. (but the radioplays in the west-- they're most likely bc of the exposure it gave them)
