So I'm going back to my native country after 10 years of not being there.

I bought my plane ticket today and I'm leaving for a month in January.

I feel like since I haven't been there for a decade I'm gonna be lost and I'm basically going to be the tourist in my own motherland.

Has anything like that happened to anyone here where you felt lost in your own country?

Yes, everytime I hit the streets, I don't find myself indentified with the average argentinian, the other day i was trying to say " XXXX esta sobrepasada", and I couldn't say sobrepasada ( verb in spanish) and I had to say "overwhelmed" ( in english) so the spanish word could come out; I don't feel I can communicate with argentinians on the same level as an regular citizen anymore, it's not only a linguistic matter, I think and read in a different cultural context ( not only english, but also by embracing chinese/japanese/korean culture)

I did that in December and came back at the end of July worst experience of life mainly because of my family who tried to take advantage over me bc they haven't seen me since i was a child.

I'm not telling my family that I'm coming for a visit. I'm hoping to surprise them unless my mother spills the beans and tells everyone cause she can't keep her mouth shut about anything

OMG I thought that it was only me! I relate to this so much! I forgot a lot of my native language, I forgot a lot of the words and I feel like when I go out I'm going to have to speak half in my native language and half in English in order to explain myself.

is said place called mexico? if it is, you better build up spice tolerance

No, I'm from Europe- Poland to be specific.

I lived in Spain 12 years then moved to Chile for 8 years. When I came back to Spain everything was different, I felt really out of place and lonely, it was a really bitter experience as people treated me differently as if I was a foreigner. I couldn't adjust back and had to return to South America.

I guess its different if you're relocating but that's not on my agenda, besides I simply cannot see myself living there. Its just not an option .

You get accustomed to certain way to life and a certain culture that its difficult to maintain 2 different identities in a way, if that makes sense.
