Disney’s animated megahit Frozen is officially the highest-grossing animated film of all time. After opening in Japan — its final market — this weekend, its total sales now reach $1.072 billion.

The tally bumps the fairy tale over Disney/Pixar’s Toy Story 3, which held the top spot since 2010, when that film grossed $1.063 billion. It is the first billion-dollar title from Disney Animation studios; domestic receipts of $398.4 million and $674 million internationally earned Frozen that distinction. In 27 territories, it is now the No. 1 Disney or Pixar film, which helped buoy it into the Top 10 of all films globally at the box office.

Frozen has also enjoyed critical success since opening in the U.S. in late November. Inspired by Hans Christian Anderson’s The Snow Queen, the 3-D fantasy won Academy Awards for best animated film and original song. Directed by Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee, the film was released on DVD and Blu-ray on March 18.

It's very easy to surpass top movies in terms of grossing because of 3D ticket sales.

One 3D ticket costs twice of a non-3D ticket. And then there's also the option of choosing 2D or just the normal one.

I think the most important factor should be the # of tickets sold instead of just how much a movie earned.

Imho, Toy Story 3 >>> Frozen

Frozen has a great OST but the whole movie overall is still sub-par to TS3. Even Tangled is more preferred by most people in terms of storyline and execution.

The hype over this movie is ridiculous. Even comparing it to Disney classics  :donthinkso:

Agreed. I liked the movie, but it is ridiculously overhyped.

Nothing from Disney's studios in the last few years can compare to the perfection that was the Disney Renaissance.

Yep the movie is good, but comparing it to the likes of The Lion King or Beauty & The Beast? WTF critics.

it's not like they can keep producing and producing these animations that are as higher quality as the previous

they're making all of this money from this... I don't think they're gonna care so much

and frankly this is all about the general public's response

for w/e reason, the majority of people who dislike this film are on Kpop forums... because the rest of the world seems to love it. It can't really be overrated or overhyped at this point... when it is succeeding w/in the capacity that it is.

critics have not dictated the success of Frozen...once it gets to this point...it's not about them.

Realise that ... "____ >>>> Frozen"... at this point... is purely going to be personal opinion.... because Frozen has the figures to back itself up.

Frozen might not be my favourite Disney production... but i'm not trying to call it basic, overrated, overhyped, or <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< tbh....there's very little basis for that.
