[College] Would it be a bad idea to learn 2 languages at once??

So I somehow got into Korean 1 off the waitlist (there were 50 people on the waitlist and I wasn't anywhere close to the top, but bc there were so many she had us email our reasons for wanting to take Korean and selected from those who emailed her - I was one of the people she chose)

and I am also currently #1 on the waitlist for Japanese 1 and almost guaranteed to get in....the thing is language classes take place every day of the school week and if I were in both Korean and Japanese they would happen only 2-3 hours from each other every day o.o

Korean is my priority but I also really want to learn Japanese so it's a bit hard to let go/drop it...

It would be challenging learning 2 languages at once, especially with one of the languages being Japanese where you have to familiarize yourself with characters as well as the spoken language (Korean has alphabet too but it's quite easy and only one) but that's just me. It really depends on how much time you have/are willing to set aside to practice and study both languages!

not bad and whats your other major beside these 2 languages?

global studies and thinking of double majoring with communication

I want to minor in korean if possible (maybe double major in korean and global studies, but korean classes at my uni are sort of unstable so im not sure if i can)

My advice you should learn korean.

I learn korean in 2011 and it is so easy.

I do not know a damn word of korean back in 2011, but after the first class I can talk and write in korean, a very enjoyable class.

Every lesson is a very happy lesson, the teacher praise me all the time.

____

I learn mandarin too, and it is easy.

but the teacher say "don't learn to write in chinese it is damn hard, just learn to speak" lol (so true).

____

I did have a free japanese book lesson (that i beg the university to give me for free), and let me say, this thing is damn hard.

like eating sounds like thanking a person sounds like saying hello, lol what the...

I think japanese is not meant to be a language to be mastered, just a language you can browse in your free time.

now you can understand and speak chinese very well and could barely write it?

it depends on whether you can handle it. I grew up bilingual so learning 2 languages isn't hard for me as long as the languages are vastly different from each other. If the languages are too similar (like Japanese and Korean which share similar vocab and grammar), it's easy to get them mixed up.

Korean and Japanese aren't that similar (IMO) so I think you'll be fine~

they share some similar words and they have the same grammar.

English word – Japanese / Korean

Arrival – ã¨ã†ã¡ã‚ƒã tochaku / ë„ì°© dochag

Promise – ã‚„ããã yakusoku / ì•½ì† yagsog

Calculation – ã‘ã„ã•ã‚“ keisan / 계산 gyesan

Electric fan – ã›ã‚“ã·ã senpuki / ì„ í’기 seonpung-gi

TV – ã¦ã‚Œã³ terebi / 텔레비 tellebi

Earthquake – ã˜ã—ã‚“ jishin / 지진 jijin

Newspaper – ã—ã‚“ã¶ã‚“ shinbun / 신문 shinmun

Time – ã˜ã‹ã‚“ jikan / 시간 shigan

Tea – ãŠã¡ã‚ƒ o-cha / ì°¨ cha

Mood (feeling) – ãã¶ã‚“ kibun / 기분 gibun

Convenient, easy – ã‹ã‚“ãŸã‚“ kantan / 간단 gandan

as someone who previously learned Japanese before taking Korean, I now often have to stop and think about the right spelling for the Korean equivalent of certain words because I'm so used to the Japanese spelling. There are many times where I'd catch myself writing 신분 instead of 신문 for newspaper due to the Japanese version being "shinbun."

imo, don't.

since neither japanese and korean is gonna be your major two languages are too much. speaking from my experience, i spend 3 years at uni learning japanese + just came from yearly scholarship in japan and i'm still lacking. i do learn korean in my free time but it's not enough.

if i were you i'd go for korean and buy a kanji book - learning kanji helped me really a lot with remembering korean words

yeah im worried about the similar grammar and words which can probably get really confusing

but ive just realized that I may have to take both anyways bc I have to drop one of my classes that conflict with korean and when I do I wont enough units unless I take japanese

I actually may double major in global studies and korean, the only problem is the korean classes are sort of unstable here and I was surprised korean 1 even opened up, but since so many people applied for the class this year I think they will continue and open up the higher level classes for it

Depends on your ambitions, eagerness to learn and the reasons why would you learn them.

Do you plan to move to Korea/Japan, work in a field where you will be needing them or are you just taking them for fun because you have some interest in them?

I mean, yeah, sure, you could learn 2 languages at once, why not.

But if you really wanna be fluent in those languages, you'll have to make big sacrifices, or you'll even get to the point where you'll need to sacrifice one language for the other.

Japanese is the language that takes time, effort and love to be really good at it. Korean is no different.

They might seem different at first glance, but it's actually quite easy to mix them. Especially if you're learning them at the same time and if you're on the same level in both languages.

If you just want to know some basics, sure, take both those classes.

If you're planning to be really good at both languages, I advice you to take one language first, my recommendation is Japanese because it's easier to learn Korean vocabulary via kanji. Take those classes 1-2 years, maybe even go abroad during that time if you can.

And then apply for another language class.
