Team Dramabeans: What we’re watching?

So, what are we all watching this week?

What kept you reaching for more (or agonizing when there was no more), and what made you want to throw your remote through the screen? Time to weigh in…

  • I’m Not a Robot: These two actors are so amazing at emoting that I find myself completely immersed in their feelings even while knowing, on the logical surface level, that this plot is fantastical and absurd. But they sell the heartache and longing so well! I cried a lot more than I thought I would this week, even though the plot itself was a little over-the-top (I mean, “I’m in love with a robot†is no “I don’t care if you’re an alien†on the angst-realism scale, but I still felt his pain!).

  • I’m Not a Robot: Yoo Seung-hooooooo, you make me cry so! What a great way to use the amnesia trope, with the reset and separation. The level of melo in this drama is just right for me—it’s emotional in the moment but never frustrating, because I know it’s temporary and there’s a happy upturn just waiting around the bend.

  • I’m Not a Robot: Episodes 19-20robot1920-00103.jpg

Though the heartbreak is far from over, Min-kyu and Jia make an effort to move on with their lives. They have work to do, people to see, and new opportunities to grasp. But the bond they created has left a serious scar on their hearts, and it’s going to take a lot of distractions to get it off their minds.

  • EPISODE 19: “I will recognize you at first sight…â€

robot1920-00020.jpg robot1920-00031.jpg

We rewind a bit, just after Dr. Oh’s horrifying discovery of patient Johnny’s death. Jia and the Santa Maria team carry dark expressions as they realize what they must do. Aji-3 identifies their expressions as “sadness,†to which Jia explains that they have to lie to their friend. Aji-3 responds that lying is bad and that this friend will misunderstand, ultimately causing Jia more sadness.

“No,†Jia says with a small smile. “I’ll be happy. As long as that friend lives well.†She turns to Baek-gyun and asks that he allow her to go to work one last time. With that, she gears up in her body armor and dress, with Pi fitting her wig for the last time. Pi says that she’s sorry, and Jia notes that she’s dropping her speech now that they’re parting ways.

robot1920-00051.jpg

Min-kyu finds Jia waiting for him in the house, and despite the solemn atmosphere, they smile at each other. Min-kyu orders her into Friend Mode, and he’s happy to hear her greet him warmly.

He apologizes for being so mean to her before and suggests that they go out for some air. He sets a timer on his watch for three hours, saying they’ll have to get back before her battery runs out. Their first stop is Min-kyu’s old elementary school, where they watch some of the kids play outside. Min-kyu thinks back to his last day in school, when his classmates had bumped into him, only to jump back with disgust at the sight of his allergic reaction.

-----

  • EPISODE 20: “You’re gone… I can never find you againâ€

Min-kyu is calling Jia to propose another purchase, only to stop when Jia doesn’t respond. She tries her best to steady her voice, asking if she’s just supposed to entertain him when he’s bored.

Min-kyu actually smiles and says that he’ll be a regular customer, so she should take care of him. Jia says that he should call a friend if he’s bored, to which he responds, “My best friend went somewhere far away.â€

That provokes another round of tears for Jia, and she struggles to speak as she lies that she’s going somewhere far away too.

robot1920-00284.jpg robot1920-00298.jpg

Min-kyu panics, asking who he’s supposed to talk to then, and Jia simply tells him that she isn’t a proxy buyer anymore and that he shouldn’t call again. Before he can answer, she quickly hangs up so she can sob freely. Just outside, Baek-gyun stands by her door and silently listens to her cry.

Back at the mansion, Min-kyu sighs after his failed attempt for a distraction and looks up at his heart-shaped book display. He decides to head over to Butler Sung’s part of the estate, and he asks that they switch bedrooms for tonight since he can’t fall asleep. Butler Sung sweetly tucks him in and even lights a candle, saying Min-kyu’s father would do the same when he had trouble sleeping.

COMMENTS

Best to get the negatives out of the way: Min-kyu and Jia were this close to running into each other so many times that it started driving me crazy. And if there’s one thing this drama succeeds at, it’s definitely driving me crazy. I liked the twist with Dr. Oh’s other patient, Johnny, especially since everyone’s fear of Min-kyu going into shock makes total sense within this world.

But after the constant clawing and gnashing these two episodes did to these characters’ hearts, I feel that the longer they keep Jia’s lie a secret, the more the shock of the reveal is sure to be. Knowing Min-kyu, the shock—and all the feelings of anger and betrayal that come with it—would only be temporary. Eventually, the relief would kick in. He’d be so happy to realize that the one person he so wanted to be real actually is real. But like Jia, I worry that the shock really could be fatal. His condition was clearly driven by a lot of hurt and anxiety, and this one lie could push him over the edge.

On top of that, these episodes didn’t give us, or the characters, much room to breathe. Min-kyu and Jia would get distracted with work, but the moment they stopped working, the hurt and loneliness would find them again. They’re moving on with their lives, as they should, but it’s clear that the pain their separation caused them will never go away. No matter how strong Min-kyu is, he was bound to break. And that’s what made his plea to Baek-gyun at the end so devastating. He can have his work, he can have his friends, but at the end of the day, he just wants the girl he loves back.

Still, no matter how much these episodes tore at my heart, they found some way to stitch it back together. The Santa Maria team was there for Min-kyu during his difficult time, and not just because Jia asked them to. They’ve become great friends, and the team doesn’t seem to like seeing Min-kyu so upset just as much as Jia. By resetting Jia, Min-kyu believes that he’s the only one who has to deal with the heartache. If only he knew Santa Maria hurts for this couple too. If only he knew that his precious Aji-3 was dealing with the same heartache.

Despite all the doom and gloom this reset has caused, it is a reset for a reason. It’s a new beginning. The chance to start anew. The old Min-kyu and the old Aji-3 may be gone, but with this encounter on the train, the new Min-kyu and the new Jia are given a chance of their own. I just hope they’re both willing to take it.

  • I’m Not a Robot: I think the strength of this show was in building up the foundation of this relationship so strongly before the separation that now, even though we are (or were) in the throes of angsty misunderstanding, the expectation of payoff keeps building in my mind. I loved how Min-kyu kept trying to cling to the girl-who’s-pretending-not-to-be-the-girl-he-wishes-she-were, and thought she played the repressed feelings beautifully. That said, I’m really hoping that the next bit of pain will be over with quickly so we can get to the uplifting reunion, because I prefer when this show makes me laugh out loud, not cry buckets! I just love these kids so much and want them to be happy.

  • I’m Not a Robot: This week was a bit of a downer, though I’m always amused by how clueless this hero is about the various identities of one girl. We now have THREE versions of her running around, and it doesn’t occur to him to question it a little more? I was okay with the level of angst when she pretended not to know him (as you do, in classic drama fashion), but next week looks brutal, and I’m bracing myself for paaaaaaaaaain.

  • I’m Not a Robot: Episodes 21-22Robot22-00514-copy.jpg

Min-kyu acts like a moth drawn to a flame when he meets the human inspiration for Aji-3, unaware of the danger that it poses for him. Jia struggles to keep her distance from Min-kyu, but he’s not so easily dissuaded. Unfortunately, the Santa Maria team is under attack and Baek-gyun is spread thin as he tries to prevent his research from falling into the wrong hands and protect Min-kyu, whose health still worries everyone around him.

EPISODE 21: “Encounter on the Trainâ€

Robot21-00007-copy.jpg Robot21-00009-copy.jpg

A saleswoman in a jewelry store sets an engagement ring in front of a somber Min-kyu and a distracted Ri-el. Later, Min-kyu suggests that they need to talk, which prompts Ri-el to explain that she doesn’t know herself as well as she thought she did. She admits that she was surprised to discover that she’s not as materialistic as she thought, which is why she can’t marry Min-kyu.

Ri-el promises to tell her father about their broken engagement and is certain of his continued support for Min-kyu at KM Financial. When Min-kyu offers to take the blame, she insists, “It’s my first time going against my dad, so it won’t be easy…It’s something I must do at least once in my life.â€

-----

EPISODE 22: “Geoje Islandâ€

A slight rewind shows that Jia tried to call Baek-gyun before she approached Min-kyu, but she couldn’t reach him. Once the hackers were evaded, Baek-gyun saw Jia’s texts, but since her phone was left in her apron pocket, she didn’t notice when he called back.

Robot22-00037-copy.jpg Robot22-00031-copy.jpg

Baek-gyun confirmed the team’s worst fears and announced that Jia and Min-kyu were together. Baek-gyun immediately called Dr. Oh, who panicked when he learned that Jia couldn’t be reached. Dr. Oh asked Baek-gyun to deliver a message, “Tell her to keep it a secret no matter what… Tell her not to say or do anything that could remind him of Aji-3.â€

Min-kyu carefully explains to Jia that he recently lost a friend and she reminds him of her. He confides, “Sometimes, absurd things happen in this world. Things people can’t believe unless they actually experience them. That friend and I experienced that miraculous moment together.â€

Robot22-00080.jpg Robot22-00082-copy.jpg

Jia does her best to remain aloof and suggests that Min-kyu needs to be seen at a hospital. As she walks away, he calls out that he used to tell his friend, “Hi, Aji-3.†Jia stops and struggles with what to do before she turns around to ask if Min-kyu knows Baek-gyun.

Jia admits that she was the character model for Aji-3 but Min-kyu confesses that he already knew. Jia doesn’t understand why he’s not bothered that she’s uncomfortable. She’s shocked when Min-kyu asks if he can just look at her with the promise that he’ll leave when he’s done.

COMMENTS

This hour was a quieter, gentler experience compared to the past few episodes. It was a much welcomed breather as all the characters were moved into place in preparation for Min-kyu’s realization that his Aji-3 is really Jia. The board has also been set for Yoo-chul’s dirty fight for control of KM Financial and Santa Maria’s research. Was anyone as surprised as I was to see Butler Sung in a completely different light as the corporate fight promises to heat up?

It was difficult to fully enjoy Min-kyu’s interactions with Jia while he was acting like such a stalker. Of course he couldn’t quite wrap his mind around the living, breathing model for Aji-3 and got caught up in the moment, but it was uncomfortable. Min-kyu still hasn’t quite adjusted to interacting with people and his reaction to Jia made that abundantly clear. What I did appreciate was that Min-kyu’s relationship with Ri-el was resolved before he ran into Jia. He’s free to follow his feelings once he sorts through the truth about Aji-3.

Robot21-00375-copy.jpg

I’m surprised that Ri-el is so drawn to Yoo-chul, who seems intent on taking the dark path to have her for himself. All he has to do is ask Ri-el, because she knows what she wants, but Yoo-chul treats her like a trophy instead of the strong, decisive woman that she’s proven herself to be. He’s not the only one who ignores her, Director Yeh has his sights set on KM Financial and he expects Ri-el to get his foot in the door, even though she doesn’t want to marry Min-kyu after all. Ri-el has turned out to be a pleasant surprise because she genuinely wants her own happiness as well as Min-kyu’s, and refuses to settle for money over love.

Ri-el isn’t the only one with problems. Poor Jia! She has to listen to Min-kyu share his pain over the loss of his friend, knowing that he’s talking about her, but she can’t tell him the truth or react in any meaningful way. Her strength in the face of such emotional bombardment proves how much she loves Min-kyu and wants to protect him. But Jia still manages to find an outlet for her feelings, just like she did when she posed as Aji-3. That wobble in the cart when Min-kyu kept talking about Aji-3 was classic Jia, and how crazy is it that she’s actually jealous of herself? I love the way that this drama deals with the romantic triangle of Min-kyu, Jia and Aji-3, which isn’t really a triangle at all. That doesn’t mean that it doesn’t pose a very real threat to Min-kyu though, because it does, and it’s only a matter of time before he’s going to have to confront the fact that his Aji-3 was a real woman all along.

  • I’m Not a Robot: Episodes 23-24robot2224-00091.jpg

Forced proximity is always the revealer of hearts, and though Jia and Min-kyu’s long night shines a light on their feelings, will it change their choices? Will Jia stop running away, and will Min-kyu realize the truth about the girl he really loves? With secrets left to spill, we can only comfort ourselves by remembering that it’s always darkest before the dawn…

Episode 23: “The truthâ€

robot2224-00034.jpg

Jia calls out as she discovers that they’re locked in the boathouse, but the captain can’t hear her over his earmuffs. She promises Min-kyu that she’ll get them out of there right away, but is dismayed to find that she can’t get any cell reception. Just as she assures him that he can count on her, a mouse-like squeak sends her hopping fearfully into the cart.

Embarrassed, she pretends she got on to turn on the headlights. Min-kyu can’t help a smile, even as she tells him not to be afraid. Aww. But he cuts her heart right in half when he tells her he’s fine, since he’s used to being locked up and cold. Oof.

A stomach rumbles, and Jia blames it on Min-kyu until a second rumble makes her realize that it’s her. Ha! She explains apologetically that she pretty much hasn’t eaten all day.

robot2224-00062.jpg robot2224-00065.jpg

Pi has no luck reaching Jia, and the snow falls steadily while Baek-gyun tries to fix the engine. He tries to send Pi back into the van so she doesn’t catch cold, adding that he can’t concentrate while she’s next to him. Pi retorts that he can’t concentrate because he’s tired, and says it wouldn’t kill him to take a break, but driving tired just might. Laughing, he concedes. Oh, you two.

Min-kyu follows Jia around the boathouse, carrying a torch for her (hee) while she looks for something to keep them warm. He balks at the pile of straw she finds, but he’s all concern when she gets a splinter in her finger. He holds her hand and slowly works it out, smiling as he finishes. Well now you’ve done it. If Jia weren’t already 600% in love with you, she definitely would be now.

robot2224-00108.jpg

Baek-gyun kips in the van as the snow continues around them. Pi quietly asks if he’s okay after finding out that Jia and Min-kyu have feelings for each other. He likens his feelings to how he thinks Min-kyu must have felt when he couldn’t find his Aji-3 again.

“I came to know why we broke up, and I wanted to make up for my past mistakes, but Jia is no longer who she was back then. And I’m no longer who I was then, either,†he reflects, adding that it’s something irrevocably over. Pi finds it a sad story, and Baek-gyun admits that it’s painful, “But it can’t compare to the pain the two of them are feeling.â€

------

Episode 24: “You promisedâ€

At the lab, the computer flashes and an alert that the Monami folder was leaked. The hacker lost most of the contents but managed to salvage a short video file, which he hands over to Yoo-chul’s man.

Another man slips into the hackers’ lair and delivers a memory stick to Director Yoon, while Yoo-chul receives the first. What, what’s going on here? Yoo-chul watches the clip—which shows Jia recoiling the first time she was delivered to Min-kyu as Aji-3—and sneers at Min-kyu for being taken in by the “friend mode†ruse.

Ri-el meets her father. She tells him how much she loves him, and he says he loves her, too. “Then let me go now,†she says, explaining that she wants to live now according to her own values. She confesses that she has someone she likes, and she won’t be marrying Min-kyu.

robot2224-00655.jpg

His face hardens on hearing that, and he says that it must be Min-kyu. But Ri-el leaves him with the plea not to make her lose her respect for him.

To Jia’s relief, Baek-gyun and Pi finally arrive. She reassures them that she wasn’t discovered, and tells them that he promised not to bother her again. Upstairs, Min-kyu wishes to himself that he hadn’t made that promise with Jia.

Grandma asks Jia if she and Min-kyu figured out their misunderstanding, but she’s suddenly called out on an emergency. She cancels her lunch reservation and tells Jia to close up after her friends leave.

robot2224-00672.jpg robot2224-00666.jpg

Pi notes that Jia’s lost weight, and Jia cheerfully replies that there’s no better diet than emotional pain. Upstairs, Min-kyu tells Baek-gyun that he’s okay, and ready to go back to Seoul. They say their farewells to “Hong-joo†and Baek-gyun promises that Min-kyu won’t seek her out again.

“I believe you won’t, because you promised,†Jia says to Min-kyu. He holds out his hand, and she clasps it briefly. But as they leave, Min-kyu looks back as a big group of sailors pour into the restaurant.

It’s the cancelled lunch reservation, but they didn’t get the message. Jia tries to explain to them that Grandma’s not here and there’s no food, but they tell her just to give them anything, which leaves her at a loss because there’s no cook.

COMMENTS

Don’t just stand there, Jia, get his epi-pens! All of them!!! Saaaaave hiiiiiiim! *Sob*

Wow, that ending was horrible to watch even when I knew exactly what was coming. What I hate about this show is that the weekly cliffhangers are always such game-changers that it’s hard to make the emotional trip back to everything that happened before it. Our hearts are already broken! How can I talk like the last five minutes didn’t happen?? I guess with our meta-knowledge, we all should have known this is exactly when the climax was due (episode 12 by the normal count, guys—it’s always episode 12). But I’m a credulous viewer, and was lulled into a false sense of security with the fizzy romcom feels this week’s episodes otherwise dispensed.

I know the locked-up-together-for-the-night device is a convenient one, but it’s also direct and effective. With Jia constantly running away, and Min-kyu in danger of coming off as a creepy stalker who can’t distinguish between robot and reality any other way, I’m not sure there was really another way for them meaningfully spend time together. Despite Jia not giving him her real name (and hiding her true feelings), I think she did act according to her real personality, and it allows Min-kyu to see Jia as she is, not in snatches and glimpses, but in actual conversation, which is particularly lovely when she finally begins to open up to him. As omniscient viewers, we know that Min-kyu already loves, relates to, likes and admires the real Jia across her multiple identities, but to see the slow moments of him falling for her in person as herself? I’m sure there’s a coherent sentence rolling around in my head somewhere for how that makes me feel, but I can’t find it right now.

robot2224-00738.jpg

It breaks me up a little bit inside every time he repeats something he heard from fauxbot-Jia. He’s clearly internalized every word she’s said to him, and her “teachings†even in the most trivial things are providing an internal scaffolding for him as he makes his way further and further into the world. The way he hangs on real-Jia’s every word is particularly painful, and it makes me appreciate how well this show has depicted heartbreak. No matter how charmed and beguiled Min-kyu is by Jia, in the moments between, he’s still always left with the desolation of his feelings for Aji-3, which accept no substitute… yet. But I also love that Min-kyu does feel that sense of possibility in his heart with Jia, especially given his perspective, because although we know his Aji-3 and Jia are one and the same, as far he knows, Jia is somebody totally different.

It chokes me up how much he wants Jia to know him, and how vulnerable that makes him. He’s more afraid that he’ll lose the people he loves (or could love) than that they won’t love him back. I find the transparence and clarity of his character so compelling, and he has this extraordinary willingness to pour his whole heart into the people he cares about. And that’s why betrayal cuts him so deeply that he almost can’t recover from it, because he holds nothing back. I don’t see this as a failure of his judgement regarding who to trust, though. His affections still have to be earned justly, and aren’t on-tap for every fool that asks—this is just how he loves, without measure or limitation. That it turns out to be a double-edged sword for him is a part of the package.

I admit I kept forgetting just why they couldn’t tell him the truth (curse you, Tilda!). Nevertheless, I see this present crisis as one of their own making. Though they obviously don’t realize it—and perhaps without the benefit of dramatic irony, they can’t—it’s their secrets and lies that brought them to this point. I get that the stakes were always high with Min-kyu’s life in the balance, but at the same time, Min-kyu isn’t Johnny, and I wish they would recognize that and give him the credit he deserves.

robot2224-00327.jpg

Over the course of the show, Min-kyu’s faced harsh truths without looking away, and he’s refused to take refuge in lies once the truth became clear. Despite his traumatized childhood and subsequent allergy, his recent development has proven that he has the ability to grow and endure, and the way he dealt with his feelings for Aji-3 and all its aftermath is nothing short of astonishing. He doesn’t need cosseting, he needs room to grow, and for his friends to trust him.

Though (now) well-meaning, they’ve handicapped him by creating a fake narrative for him to inhabit, which has the effect of taking away his choices. I’ve been getting frequent Truman Show flashbacks watching this show from the start, which is pretty much the level of wtf-ery we’re talking about, even if it’s unintentional. Still, they really do care about him, and that counts in the end, but now I’m scared that Min-kyu’s most private moments will be exposed to his enemies. That’s too sad.

With just two weeks left, our various plotlines are beginning to converge, and I think we can expect more company machinations next week. I’m not sure how to read Yoo-chul anymore, now that he’s actively setting out to harm Min-kyu. But that’s another thing they brought onto themselves—if they hadn’t got grabby, Yoo-chul would still have his job, right? Ri-el is the only reason I haven’t written him off, because I don’t think she could like him if he were irredeemable. On that note, how awesome is she? Straight as an arrow and always classy, she has poise and dignity no matter what. Aren’t the women in this show really fantastically drawn? They’re all so different, yet I want to be besties with every one of them.

  • Team Dramabeans: What we’re watching

DT-iMBKV4AAsers.jpg

So, what are we all watching this week?

What kept you reaching for more (or agonizing when there was no more), and what made you want to throw your remote through the screen? Time to weigh in…

javabeans

  • I’m Not a Robot: To be honest I’m not very excited about the offerings at the moment, but I am glad to have this show around in this cycle, which makes me happy when Wednesday rolls around and there’s a new episode to watch, and then makes me sad on Thursdays when I have another week to wait again. The scheming corporate plotline is a bit eye-rolly (but thankfully only told in brief bursts), but the emotions are played so sincerely that I’m all in with the characters, from our leads down to their bumbling posse.

girlfriday

  • I’m Not a Robot: It was really hard to watch Yoo Seung-ho’s heart get ripped out repeatedly, because he just always makes me believe the emotions are real. It was worth going through all that pain (and more pain) to earn back the relationships the right way, though now I’m wondering what we’re going to fill the next two hours with. I hope not corporate takeovers, because zzzz.

LollyPip

  • I’m Not a Robot: I don’t know what it is about Yoo Seung-ho, but he has a way of ripping out my heart and stomping it to bits that no other actor can match (maybe it’s those deep, expressive eyes?). And I’ve liked Chae Soo-bin ever since I first saw her in Sassy Go Go. The chemistry between the two of them is fantastic when it comes to their offbeat not-really-romance, and even though I’m behind on this show too, I can see that when the actual feelings get involved, together they’re going to break my heart completely.
