Ok, so I really liked ep 1 and 2 and I'm glad I have this drama right now since almost all dramas on air seem to be about justice and law. Nothing against it, but all the other dramas are doing it at the moment.

I also started black knight and tight now it's a bit cliché but I need to watch more since there is only one ep so far.

I love this storyline, it's nothing like I watched before and nothing like the rest of the dramas on air right now.

You were right, her reaction when she saw him was super funny! But at the same time I'm a bit worried when he finds out she's not a robot, I hope he does not get mad, my heart will break rlytearpls.png

Can't wait to watch ep 3 and 4!

im sure he will get mad once he find out bout her, and then perhaps he'll realised something missing after she gone soon...

i think i get whats the plot about, eventho im still not watch from the 1st eps yet haha trollfaceplz.png

4 Things We Loved And 3 Things We Hated About The “I Am Not A Robot†Premiere

Yoo-Seung-Ho-Chae-Soo-Bin-1-e15127262386

MBC’s newest drama, “I Am Not a Robot,†has aired its first week! With Yoo Seung Ho and Chae Soo Binheading the cast of this Wednesday-Thursday drama, we knew it wouldn’t be one to miss. Want to know what we loved and hated from the first week of “I Am Not a Robotâ€? Read on to find out!

Warning: spoilers for Episodes 1 and 2 ahead.

1. Loved: Min Kyu’s human interactions

“I Am Not a Robot†is Yoo Seung Ho’s romantic comedy debut, and he is absolutely killing it as Kim Min Kyu, a man who is allergic to humans. Min Kyu’s allergy to other people is legitimate, but that doesn’t make him any less of a diva as he keeps others at bay with gloves, batons, and all kinds of barriers — and it’s hilarious to watch Yoo Seung Ho play a character that is so over-the-top extra.

Yoo-Seung-Ho-Chae-Soo-Bin.gif&key=b81cfaYoo-Seung-Ho-Chae-Soo-Bin-1.gif&key=9c26

2. Hated: too little set-up

  • We know what happens when Min Kyu touches another person, because he was kind enough to demonstrate this for us at the very beginning of the drama. Spoiler: even with a rash all over his body, Yoo Seung Ho is still handsome.

Yoo-Seung-Ho.gif&key=4df2553d441c15fbf03

Yoo-Seung-Ho4-e1512716385423.jpg&key=cc8

Still handsome, but also a bit terrifying.

But then the drama sets a very fast pace, doing itself a bit of a disservice by not spending enough time emphasizing Min Kyu’s ailment from the outset. As a result, it becomes easy to forget about his human allergy when we watch him interact with Jo Ji Ah (Chae Soo Bin), and this scene in which a man with an allergy to humans is able to safely touch another human (although unbeknownst to him) doesn’t feel like nearly as big a deal as it should:

Lee-Seung-Ho-Chae-Soo-Bin-2.gif&key=0f3b Lee-Seung-Ho-Chae-Soo-Bin-3.gif&key=3661

But a fast-paced drama is better than one that moves too slowly, so hopefully this means that “I Am Not a Robot†will maintain high energy in weeks to come.

3. Loved: Min Kyu’s hobbies

  • There may be downsides to not being able to spend time with other people, but Min Kyu seems to have a grand enough time on his own. He’s developed quite a few hobbies, ranging from the impressive to the hilarious, and we loved seeing some snapshots of his life of solitude. His favorite pastimes include building dope card houses:

4. Hated: weird power dynamics

  • As the drama progresses, the relationship between Min Kyu and Ji Ah will inevitably undergo some major changes. But until then, it’s a little uncomfortable watching Ji Ah (and the robot Aji 3, for that matter) acting so subservient to the men around her — especially knowing that this strange dynamic between her and Min Kyu is eventually going to give way to love.

6. Hated: Ji Ah’s immaturity

Chae-Soo-Bin-12.gif&key=c9d1cb2502a0586a

  • As far as female K-drama characters go, Ji Ah is pretty badass in a lot of ways. But I’m still not sure if I truly like her yet, largely because of the immaturity that comes out in her relationship with her brother, who attempts to instill a sense of responsibility in her.

7. Loved: the unique plot

Yoo-Seung-Ho-Chae-Soo-Bin1.gif&key=646d5

  • A man with an allergy to humans, a girl pretending to be a robot, and a bunch of unanswered questions: why does Min Kyu have this allergy? Why is Ji Ah the only human he can touch without getting a reaction — but only when he thinks she’s a robot? And how long can they live together before he finds out that she’s not actually the robot Aji 3?

  • I’m Not a Robot: Episodes 1-2

One episode in, and I’m Not a Robot is looking to be an unconventional treat with strong performances from actors who look like they’re having lots of fun. This story of misfits already has a lot of heart: Yoo Seung-ho is sure to make us laugh and cry, while Eom Ki-joon tackles lighter fare as an eccentric genius. And Chae Soo-bin is not to be missed in a dual role as one very flawed human who may learn a thing or two from her robot counterpart.

EPISODE 1: “I’m fine being aloneâ€IAmNotaRobot-0000007-copy.jpg

The driver of a sports car opens a special briefcase and dons the gloves, hat, and mask inside. He fills a syringe and places it in his pocket before he exits the car, armed with a baton. The driver, KIM MIN-KYU (Yoo Seung-ho), appears before a panel of doctors for a hearing about his exemption from military service. He removes his mask while the doctors discuss his condition—an allergy to human contact.

The doctors scoff at his feeble attempt to draft-dodge and deem him fit for service. Face hardening, Min-kyu pulls off his gloves and shirt and advances menacingly on the doctors, who shrink back nervously. Min-kyu then grabs the wrist of the closest doctor and huge red blotches and blisters spread along Min-kyu’s body, starting at the point of contact. Min-kyu plunges the syringe into his arm as he explains that his reaction occurs after physical contact and that the severity worsens with the length of the contact. The doctors back up in fear, now convinced of Min-kyu’s unsuitability, relieved when he tells them that his condition isn’t contagious.

Min-kyu drives his car through a large gate and past impeccably maintained grounds where a gardener shouts out, “It’s ready.†Min-kyu parks in front of an estate and enters with a smile.

notarobot0102-00010a.jpg

Surrounded by balloons, Min-kyu beams at his guest of honor, a robot vacuum cleaner outfitted with a birthday hat. He wishes, “Happy Birthday, our cutie,†and presents his gift, a pack of new batteries so that they can stay together a long time. Awww.

As the vacuum goes about its work, Min-kyu wanders through his expansive home, which contains many glass cases filled with collectibles. He occupies himself with an aquarium and a house of cards that’s taller than he is, telling us that contrary to what we think, he lives quite well on his own.

When he chokes on a handful of capsules, Min-kyu slams himself against a pillar in a self-administered Heimlich maneuver and narrates that he’s mastered the art of living alone.

IAmNotaRobot-0000108-copy.jpg

During a kiss scene in an old movie, Min-kyu catches himself about to kiss his pillow and tosses it aside. Min-kyu’s narration insists that he’s not at all lonely as he floats in the pool, but he sighs when he confesses, “I need some space to protect myself.â€

JO JIA (Chae Soo-bin) camps outside a store to buy a limited edition figure for a customer. Jia, also known as President Jo, answers texts from grateful customers when a man asks about the reason for the line. He feigns interest in Jia’s work so he can plop down in the spot next to her, but Jia calls him out for cutting. The crowd cheers when she threatens him and the man leaves in embarrassment. The doors finally open and the crowd is orderly until the line-cutter runs to the front to try to charge his way through. Chaos ensues and the man and Jia are the first to get past the guards and approach the display of the coveted figures.

Jia pulls back the line-cutter and is the first to get a limited edition figure. She protectively shields it from another customer just as a boy with a corndog bumps into the box and leaves behind a smear of ketchup. Unaware that the box has been compromised, Jia schedules the delivery.

IAmNotaRobot-0000181-copy.jpg

Jia’s scooter stops next to a car parked by the river and Min-kyu lowers the back window and asks her to place the box in the back seat. Jia demands payment first, but Min-kyu reminds her that he paid for the figure in advance.

Min-kyu promises to double Jia’s commission as long as the package is pristine, but he needs to inspect it first. Jia places the box in the back seat and waits while Min-kyu examines it—of course he spots the ketchup stain. Angry that he missed his opportunity to get the item in perfect condition, he refuses additional payment.

COMMENTS

I had no idea what to expect from I’m Not a Robot, so I was pleasantly surprised by the first two episodes. The performances by Yoo Seung-ho, Eom Ki-joon, and Chae Soo-bin really make this drama something special and I hope that they can sustain the energy that went into the premiere. In addition to the strong performances, the drama offers little details here and there that show that a lot of love went into this production, like the reference to E.T. plus others that I’m sure I missed.

Yoo Seung-ho brings a complexity to Min-kyu that must be seen to be appreciated. While Min-kyu is certainly immature since he has no experience interacting with people, Yoo Seung-ho imbues him with a childlike quality that is sweet, yet heartbreaking. Min-kyu has the curiosity and pettiness of someone far younger while he possesses the intelligence and drive of an adult. I just hope we get many more chances to see Yoo Seung-ho smile, because he just lights up the screen.

notarobot0102-00050a.jpg

I think this is the first time that I’ve seen Eom Ki-joon in a comedic role and he’s so much fun. He’s just thrown himself into the role of the socially challenged Baek-gyun and his fluffy poodle hair just kills me. I can’t wait to learn exactly how he and Jia got together and what it is about her that’s been so hard to forget.

Between Jia and Aji-3, I must admit that I like Aji-3 better, and that’s not the fault of Chae Soo-bin. While Min-kyu has the excuse that he has little experience with people and Baek-gyun has trouble talking about anything other than science, Jia can’t seem to get along with anyone. She lectures Baek-gyun about his idiosyncrasies, dismisses Min-kyu without listening to him, and is a burden to her brother. I’m tired of her already but that only makes Aji-3 such a powerful counterpoint to her human model. I just know that Aji-3 will teach Jia about what a gift it is to be human and I can’t wait to see how she changes for the better.

  • Team Dramabeans: What we’re watching

So, what are we all watching this week?

  • What kept you reaching for more (or agonizing when there was no more), and what made you want to throw your remote through the screen? Time to weigh in…

  • I’m Not a Robot: I found this charming and funny. It took a little time to settle into its groove, and at first I worried it might be too cheesy or overly silly… but then the robot stuff kicked in and I loved the surreal comedic feel of the scientists and the hero’s “allergy.†This world is not our world, but an over-the-top, slightly absurdist one that made me think of a cute anime series. The comedy is more obvious than witty, but I find the situations pretty amusing, and the characters are appealing. Please don’t suck!

  • I’m Not a Robot: Cute! The setup is wacky, but the acting is strong and sucks me into the world and the nutty situations, making me care about the connection between our millionaire recluse and his new not-a-robot friend. The second he held a birthday party for his robot vacuum in the first few minutes of the show, I was on his side. Somebody love this boy!

I was actually going to skip this drama because the plot didn't really appeal to me

I'm glad I tried it though because it's hilarious and actually refreshing

I read a few comments which said his condition is psychological? And because he's been told Aji3 is a robot he isn't allergic to the female lead? I think this seems pretty feasible. Can't wait for the next ep

in fact that 'fake aji3' is a human LOL and i cant wait for minkyu to know that later on laugh.png

  • I’m Not a Robot: Episodes 3-4robot34-00516.jpg

Hi, Yoo Seung-ho. Aside from the honest joy of a show where the name of the game is not to break the cuties, I’m really enjoying its happy energy. Isn’t it so fun to see a smirky wicked Yoo Seung-ho, emotionally hapless (and non-psychopathic) yet still enigmatic Eom Ki-joon, and dual-identity Chae Soo-bin as inventor-slash-fauxbot? I mean, why would you not watch this?

EPISODE 3: “I can do many things for youâ€

robot34-00001.jpg robot34-00003.jpg

The Santa Maria teammates snap nervously at each other while they connect to Jia’s wifi. Meanwhile, Min-kyu greets his new arrival: “Hi, Aji-3.â€

Jia opens her eyes and begins her scripted greeting, “I love you, Master,†but leaps back screaming when she recognizes him as the guy who ripped her off, much to Min-kyu’s own shock.

Eyeing her warily, he phones Baek-gyun and reports Jia’s rude exclamations. Thanks to quick-thinking Pi, Baek-gyun spins it as an operational glitch, “friend mode,†and advises a reboot.

robot34-00089.jpg robot34-00095.jpg

The rest of the team is convinced that Min-kyu’s too smart to buy it, but what he’s really outraged at is the robot’s presumption to friendship. Jia only manages to master her own temper by reminding herself of the money.

Pressing the power button at the back of her neck, Min-kyu starts again: “Hi, Aji-3.†This time, she responds according to script, but he deducts points for her faulty startup. In the van, Hok-tal and Ssan-ip are amazed that Min-kyu bought their deception, but Baek-gyun explains that it would simply not occur to him that the robot wasn’t a robot.

Oh no, the electricity suddenly cuts out, severing their connection with Jia. She’s left in confusion as her retina display disappears. To make matters worse, Min-kyu decides to administer a test of her hardware abilities and issues increasingly complex commands.

=====

EPISODE 4: “Welcome to my homeâ€

Baek-gyun is alarmed to hear that the special part they’d ordered for Aji-3 was mistakenly sent to Africa and is now at least five days away. At that inopportune moment, Min-kyu calls him. Impressed with the robot, he proposes taking Aji-3 for the month of “deep learning†that Baek-gyun said was required to fully train the robot; he’ll put off making a decision about Daeyang Shipbuilding and the Santa Maria team’s fate until then.

He wants the robot delivered the next day, but Baek-gyun comes up with various excuses, all of which Min-kyu offers immediate solutions for. Asserting his right as co-owner, Baek-gyun offers to send her in a week’s time.

robot34-00781.jpg

Min-kyu receives a reply to his email from “Madame X†containing files about Daeyang’s late chairman, someone called Park Sung-jin.

Elsewhere, Jin-bae accepts the embezzling manager’s resignation. The manager warns Jin-bae to watch his own back and pick his side carefully: Min-kyu is the son of the late first chairman of KM Financial, while Yoo-chul is the son of the current one and thus bound to prevail in the end.

Jin-bae certainly looks like he’s having second thoughts, especially when Min-kyu intercepts him on his way home and summons him into the back of his car (where a divider protects him from human contact).

robot34-00820.jpg robot34-00822.jpg

Jin-bae updates him on Embezzling Manager’s resignation, and Min-kyu tells him to suspend all of that team’s projects. Min-kyu also shows Jin-bae the files he received from Madame X, which are detailed plans of robotic parts.

He explains that Daeyang’s late chairman was secretly in partnership with Baek-gyun to develop advanced robots, and they escaped detection by lying low after his death. Swearing him to secrecy, Min-kyu assigns Jin-bae to find out if anyone else in KM Financial knows the truth about the Santa Maria team, especially CEO Yoo-chul or his father.

Jin-bae meets with the Santa Maria team to tell them Min-kyu wants them to move in to his estate. He advises them to accept whatever Min-kyu says, since their fate is in his hands.

COMMENTS

It seems like Aji-3 is working just fine right now, so I admit I don’t understand why Jia has to go back in. But I’m not one to turn my nose up to delicious things, so I’ll just leave that thought here.

“Hi, Aji-3.†Does anyone else a little stab in their heart every time Min-kyu says it? I feel like those three words are loaded with all of his hope and vulnerability, and each time he says it, it’s a little more meaningful. After all, Min-kyu’s the human, not the robot, so he’s not following a script. This is what I love about Yoo Seung-ho: No matter the role he’s in, he’s able to bring a sense of unscripted rawness. Even though this is not a melo (it had better not be!), there’s a visible but not overpowering touch of tragedy to his character. For example, there’s clearly something big and bad between him and Chairman Hwang, and I’m willing to bet his parents’ deaths have something to do with it.

I’d also guess his “allergy†must stem from the time of his parents’ death. My theory is that he alone survived whatever accident (or accident, if you know what I mean) that killed his parents, though it’s hard figuring him out yet with so little to go on. But one thing is absolutely clear: He doesn’t desire his condition, nor does he take refuge in it. If there’s anything obvious about his character, it’s that he’s desperate for connection. Since it can’t be a human, surely a humanoid robot is the next best thing? Just look at the speed and eagerness with which he embraced the idea. The thought of him really falling for Jia while believing she’s a robot is a little mindblowing and I badly want to see it.

robot34-00500.jpg

But there’s another aspect of his isolation I also find interesting. He has to eschew physical contact, understood, but there’s no barrier preventing him from having emotional closeness, so why does he trust almost no one, and have not a single friend? I suspect the answer lies in the nature of his relationship with Yoo-chul. There’s closeness there, but also bad blood, and I expect that why that onetime friendship turned sour will be an important thread in the story to come. After seeing Kang Ki-young play a creepy kitten-killer, I’m trying to guess whether his character is headed for an ever-darkening trajectory, or if the boys’ friendship will be salvaged. Okay, probably not the latter! Sigh!

For a rom-com, that’s a lot of heavy emotion, and I’m glad we have Chae Soo-bin’s character to balance the darkness. I like that Jia is neither happy-go-lucky, nor a downtrodden Candy; she has her own problems, but she’s also her own woman. Refreshingly for a dramaland heroine, she’s an inventor and entrepreneur, blessed with ordinary intelligence. You can see what might have brought her together with Baek-gyun, who would have shared her way of looking at the world—with curiosity and possibility.

It’s a very different picture—a whole different book, even—from the strictures of Jin-bae’s world, which is dominated by hierarchy, duty, and the desperate pursuit to survive corporate waters. It seems to me that Jia’s crushed between those two extremes, the driven geniuses and the driven salarymen, struggling to create a space of her own. I’m not sure if it’s made clear, but I’m getting the idea that the competition she’s trying to enter is to win an investment for the commercial production of her lamps (I could be wrong). But I love that that her mission is so clearly about achieving success as a result of effort, will and passion—she’s going to succeed, and she doesn’t need to be a genius for it.
