How do you define "impact"?

Was just reading stuff and when people say "my faves left a legacy and impact" what does it mean?

Because for me, impact is more than about sales. I don't rely on Melon or Hanteo statistics, awards or Youtube streams to determine impact.

Big Bang is considered impactful because they made hiphop and self-producing idols a thing. DBSK is considered impactful because they shattered the glass ceiling for Korean pop groups in Japan. Hyori & Park Jiyoon are considered impactful because they made sexy images acceptable. SES, FinKL, Baby VOX are impactful because they kicked off the girl group trend in Korea. Suju and SNSD are impactful because they made big groups acceptable. WG is impactful because they're the cultprit main reason why K-Pop is so reliant on hooks. Shinhwa are legends because they've gone through lawsuits, marriages, scandals but have been a group for over two decades (proof that boybands can be eternal without hiatus)

So for me, you are a "trend" group or act if you are massively popular but didn't really shake the landscape. Once your peak passes, I will only consider you as someone "who was really big before" if your popular years didn't really bring anything new to the K-Pop industry aside from you getting high sales and popularity. Many acts become popular, but not all of them are impactful. And for me, to be considered a "legend", you need to have brought about something mindblowing that affects the K-Pop scene as a whole. I feel newer K-Pop fans throw out the term "legend" really haphazardly just because oppa or unnie sold a lot (though the reality is any trending group/act WILL sell a lot - but that isn't enough to make them legends)

'. Suju and SNSD are impactful because they made big groups acceptable'

is this a joke?

I was there for SNSD's debut. People were joking that SM is now copying Morning Musume. They were treated as a joke predebut because they were so big. Obviously, they were able to turn that opinion around and it's now common to see girlgroups with at least 9 members.

Back in my time, 6 members is really pushing it.

edit: lmao at the negs... EXO doing this is a fact and you can't deny its impact unsure.png why do you think we're all arguing about sales all the time nowadays?

Ya'll really policing the use of a stan term now?

Also: no 2NE1 and their impact on the girl crush concept. Byeeeeeee.

I can't possibly name all "legends" lmao but 2NE1 was definitely the spearhead of the girlcrush concept. Everyone was shook when Fire came out.

You'd be surprised by how many stans throw out the term "legend" in a serious context.

Like what? What did they bring to the K-Pop scene aside from that, which hasn't been done by ANY of their sunbaes?

This is why I don't consider million sales as a free pass for the legendary status as well. Pre-digital era idols normally get millions purely in domestic sales but current idols rely also on fans outside Korea with multiple versions.

you do realize that impact isnt about sales.

Impact is when post office decides to make your post marks, impact is when Korea decides to endorse their country by saying in Korea we have SNSD, impact is when whole country starts wearing skinny jeans in color while calling them soshi gee look, impact is when there are classes that teach grandpas and grandmas how to dance to your song. impact is when 99% of girl groups in Korea say you are their inspiration.

Yes it is some people and their faves are now trying to find relevancy in that department. If not for EXO, physical sales will not be a thing used by some fans to try to put down other groups success.

Listen OP i know you're only interested in idols but for you to say Big Bang made hip hop a thing............................ what kind of ignorancy?

In the 90s you have Jinusean, Seo Taiji and Boys and Hyun Jinyoung who introduced and popularized hip hop music, even in the 2000s Epik High, Leessang and Dynamic Duo are already popular even Yoon Mirae and her earlier duo song Warning is so popular they included it as an iconic song for the Pump It Up game and Tiger JK and Uptown exists and Tiger JK's group Drunken Tiger is the first commercially successful hip hop artist. Big Bang didn't do a damn thing to hip hop they just simply hopped into the trend that their predecessors set even their first main success isn't a hip hop song. The ones making hip hop artists are so mainstream nowadays is Show Me The Money and other shows like Tribe of Hip Hop
