  • Witch’s Court: Episode 11

A return to the lighthearted (or as lighthearted as a show about sexual abuse can get) is welcome, as our heroes enter the final few weeks of battle. Yi-deum is back on form as she scrambles to prove herself, and I have no complaints that we quickly move past the more fraught fall-out from last week. This show has always been strongest when it concentrates on our main characters, and it’s good to know that hasn’t changed, even when their circumstances have.

EPISODE 11 RECAP

witchscourt11-00003a.jpg

Three months after Yi-deum left without a trace, she turns up at the prosecutor’s office, and Jin-wook’s delight at seeing her again quickly turns to exasperation as he learns that Yi-deum isn’t here on a social visit. She’s listed as the accused party in a sexual harassment suit, and he quotes the report incredulously, “He was so good-looking you couldn’t help yourself? Why did you do it?â€

In flashback to one week before, we see Yi-deum in her new—very cramped and messy—place on the phone with a bank telemarketer who tries to sell her on loan products. Yi-deum hopefully asks for a loan of 50 million won (roughly $50,000) without interest, and while that gets denied, it does give her an idea to make some money.

WC11_00017.jpg

Emboldened, Yi-deum heads straight to a respectable-looking law office for an interview, and brags that she’s just out of the prosecutor’s office. She brazenly lists her demands, and asks for 50 million won up front. Unsurprisingly, this tactic doesn’t work, and Yi-deum is told that the firm won’t hire her because of her scandalous past.

Yi-deum’s next stop is to the Seoul Eastern Prosecutor’s office, where she stands proudly outside the building while taking selfies that read “#FreshStart†and “#SuccessfulLawyer.†Except she isn’t here for a job, and instead energetically starts to hand out cards to passersby with the offer of a “free consultation†from a former prosecutor.

WC11_00056.jpg

Yi-deum doesn’t have much luck, but it gets worse when Mi-young and Investigator Gu recognize her, and she can’t get away fast enough. The duo are pleased to see Yi-deum, and even have exciting news—Mi-young is pregnant and Gu is the father!

It happens that after Prosecutor Min and Yi-deum left, Mi-young and Gu went for drinks together and they proudly state it only took that one time for Mi-young to get pregnant. Yi-deum congratulates the happy pair, and hesitantly asks if “everyone†is okay at the office.

witchscourt11-00019a.jpg witchscourt11-00017a.jpg

Mi-young answers that everyone is okay: Prosecutor Jang has taken over as Chief Prosecutor, and her leadership style is so eerily similar to Prosecutor Min’s that she sounds like she’s been possessed by their old boss. A new prosecutor, Park Hoon-soo (Yi-deum’s former colleague), has been brought in to replace Yi-deum. Jin-wook still hasn’t adjusted to Yi-deum’s departure though, and regularly calls Hoon-soo by Yi-deum’s name, as well as resisting his attempts to get to know him better.

Yi-deum brags to Mi-young that she is doing well too, with a new car and her pick of law firms. Unfortunately, someone knocks into her bag of promotional freebies she was handing out, revealing her lie. Mortified, she grabs for the packets desperately and runs away.

COMMENTS

I have to say that I am mightily relieved that this episode brought the funny back. I don’t even mind that the show used a time skip to get us there, which can be a pretty cheap trick that robs us of character development. Considering how little Yi-deum has changed, though, I don’t think the time jump would have shown us anything substantial.

On that point, however, I actually love how Yi-deum has remained largely the same since the start. Yi-deum will never stop bragging, because she really is that good at her job. Her abrasive personality has stayed the same, but she knows how to make connections with people as well. Yi-deum’s motivations may have been suspect, but she came to the realization herself that revenge comes with a cost, and she paid too steep a price for it last week. Thankfully, we don’t dwell too long on Yi-deum’s self-reproach, and to the show’s credit it doesn’t try to castigate her other actions. Yi-deum will always remain just a little bit of a scoundrel, but she knows how to toe the line without crossing it.

As Jin-wook pointed out, Yi-deum’s motivations do seem to have shifted a little, mostly in that she has more compassion for victims now. Realistically though, her style will never be as empathetic as Jin-wook’s, which is a good thing because she balances out his naivety, and she will always play by her own rules. Case in point: Yi-deum took down Sang-hyun because he betrayed and lied to her, as well as discovering that he was drugging women, not just because she believes in a pure form of justice.

This week’s case was straightforward enough, and I was only invested insofar as I loved seeing Jin-wook and Yi-deum butt heads again. Especially the part where Yi-deum encouraged Jin-wook to do well in court. I thought it was really sweet throughout the episode that Yi-deum continued to teach Jin-wook how to be a better prosecutor (in her own hilarious way) even though she is no longer his sunbae, and that Jin-wook begrudgingly listened to her in return.

WC11_00532.jpg

In the case itself, Yi-deum took on the role of slimy lawyer protecting a guilty client, and to a viewer’s eyes, her comments on victim Yoo-jin’s “flirty†texts and outfit might have seemed on the nose. To my real-world eyes though, I know that such a defense is all too common and usually persuasive, and I’m glad we didn’t spend any longer on such arguments before my blood pressure could get too high. My bigger problem with the case was why no one suspected that Yoo-jin had been drugged until halfway through the trial. I have gotten used to side-eyeing the case shenanigans, though, so I guess I’ll just put up with it until the end.

On the whole, it feels like we have hit the reset button on the show. Jin-wook has had time for his anger to dissipate (what little there was of it) and has instead morphed into worry over Yi-deum’s disappearance, which makes it easy for them to easily slip back into their old affectionately combative relationship. Yi-deum’s irrepressibly audacious nature is back after she has had time to contemplate what her mistakes have wrought. And it looks like we are finally going to get the Yi-deum and Lawyer Min buddy-up that I have been waiting for. Even the case this week reminded me of the case from the very first episode—a professional woman who knows the risks that coming forward will have on her career but does so anyway. All of this is to say that I know it can be tempting for a show to continue getting darker or upping the melodrama once it nears the end of its run, but I’m glad that Witch seems to have avoided that.

The legal cases are still laughably bad, Jo Gap-soo remains pointless, and it has taken an unforgivably long time to fold Min into the main action, but I’m glad we’re back in the show’s sweet spot. I have a lot of fun watching Yi-deum’s antics, the show still has some incisive things to say about sexual assault and I can only hope that our team finally comes together to take down the bad guys.

  • Team Dramabeans: What we’re watching

So, what are we all watching this week?

What kept you reaching for more (or agonizing when there was no more), and what made you want to throw your remote through the screen? Time to weigh in…

javabeans

  • Witch’s Court: I love that Yi-deum is still her irrepressible self, and she is remarkably likable for someone whose ethics are always toeing that line, veering on the edge of going too far. I actually prefer this setup, out of the prosecutor’s office and going at it from the other side, where her experience as a former prosecutor gives her a hefty advantage. Mostly, I’m waiting to see how the romance finally shakes out, since they’re still at philosophical odds, though the sharp edges have worn down now. Can we get some movement on that, please?

  • Witch’s Court: I’m taking my time with this one because it’s not the most riveting show. Even though we’re mostly guaranteed justice for the victims, the cases are always so icky to watch and sometimes timed too perfectly as plot devices for Yi-deum’s storyline. I like Yi-deum as a character, with her sharp tongue and stubborn nature, and I really like Jung Ryeo-won in the role because she embraces the unlikeable aspects of the character very well. But I am in no rush to catch up. When I run out of things to watch, I’ll get back to this show.

  • Witch’s Court: After the climax of last week, this week was a bit of a snoozefest, but I’m glad Yi-deum is on her way to getting her mojo back.

  • Witch’s Court: Episode 12WC12-00152.jpg

The case today is two decades old, and being forced to rely on memory puts our heroes in a precarious position. Time does weird things to memories and sometimes it’s hard to judge when someone is telling the truth, lying, or is just plain confused. It’s going to take Yi-deum’s arsenal of skills to pin this bad guy down, but she’s clever like a fox and if anyone has a chance at succeeding with the odds stacked against them, it’s her.

EPISODE 12 RECAP

After a bar owner is stabbed in his establishment, the police investigate all the patrons from that evening. Among them is Jo Gap-soo’s secretary-henchman, Kim Hyung-soo, but his alibi checks out and they send him home.

The following day, Hyung-soo reports to Jo Gap-so that Jo’s wife had a small shock and Jo angrily wonders why the doctors can’t keep her comatose with all the money he pays. Hyung-soo’s phone rings and he answers a call from a police officer, who then informs him that his DNA matches a sexual assault case from 1997. At the same time, a female janitor receives a call during work. She’s Hong Sun-hwa, the victim who reported the 1997 case. The officer tells her the assailant has been identified and although visibly shaken, she wants to press charges.

WC12-00015.jpg

Flashback to November 1997. A group of teenagers sat around a campfire, and one pair was particularly shy. After everyone else had gone, the boy nervously offered to walk the girl back, and, smiling, she took his hand… only to be rushed to the hospital in an ambulance sometime later, unconscious and battered.

In the present, Mi-young briefs the team on the case. The police had taken Sun-hwa’s testimony and DNA evidence at the time of the incident, but because they met on a trip, Hyung-soo had given a fake name and school. Prosecutor Seo wonders how much either party will remember after two decades, and Jin-wook agrees that memories can be altered by time. Regardless, the team resolves to do their best for the victim.

WC12-00028.jpg WC12-00029.jpg

Meanwhile, Yi-deum discusses the case with Lawyer Min, thinking that if they pressure Hyung-soo, he’ll reveal Jo Gap-soo’s weakness. She proposes that they work together and is surprised when Lawyer Min shoots her down. Min reminds her of Soo-ah’s case and Yi-deum says she’s repenting.

Min warns Yi-deum that she’s in danger of making the same mistake. Reminding her that she’s a lawyer, Min advises Yi-deum to find another prosecutor’s job if she can’t let it go.

WC12-00049.jpg WC12-00048.jpg

Yi-deum declares she now aspires to defend victims. Lawyer Min is naturally incredulous, but Yi-deum assures her she’s changed and swears not to do anything unethical ever again. Lawyer Min can’t help but smile as Yi-deum ferociously vows, “I will become a warm lawyer who wipes victims’ tears and fights against perpetrators—a lawyer that is honest and just!â€

Relenting, Lawyer Min passes her the case file and tells her to give it a shot. Yi-deum happily accepts it and then sees that the assigned prosecutor is Jin-wook.

Jin-wook receives a text from Lawyer Min informing him that Yi-deum will be assisting on the case and asking that he make sure she behaves.

WC12-00063.jpg WC12-00058.jpg

When he arrives at his office, Yi-deum is already there and acting chummy with Hoon-soo. Irritaed, Jin-wook asks what she’s doing and Hoon-soo answers that Yi-deum was showing him her strategy for the case. Jin-wook doesn’t understand why she’s strategizing with Hoon-soo, who chides him for being inflexible. Hoon-soo thinks they should help each other and Yi-deum enthusiastically agrees.

Ignoring them, Jin-wook asks how far Yi-deum intends to go and she admits that she’s still unsure. However, she does think that they should replace the lead prosecutor. Jin-wook’s expression turns even sourer as she suggests letting Hoon-soo take over, promising to give him her full support.

Unsurprisingly, Jin-wook isn’t amused and ushers Yi-deum out of the office, locking the door behind her. Before leaving, though, she pops up in the window and motions for Hoon-soo to call her. Hee.

COMMENTS

YES! This is what I’ve been waiting for since the start of the show! Prosecutor/Lawyer Min is such an underutilized character. She was introduced as this badass, no-nonsense prosecutor on the hunt for the Big Bad and then instead of becoming a mentor to Yi-deum and forming a power duo, she kinda fell by the wayside for eleven episodes. Missed opportunities, is all I’m saying.

Last week was painful to watch, but this week the show seemed to get a kick in the pants because it brought back all the things I loved and even pulled out some things I felt we’d been missing (aka Prosecutor Min). Yi-deum is definitely this show’s crowning glory and she was in top form this week as she took down the bad guys with her morally questionable flair. I love that even as she grows, she never truly changes and I wouldn’t have it any other way. Yi-deum is not your typically K-drama heroine and so often the ones that start out that way, slowly conform to standard clichés as the drama progresses. I’m always sad when a strong female lead loses her spunk but Yi-deum has retained her spitfire attitude and refuses to bend down to anyone’s will.

Another positive is the return of Yi-deum and Jin-wook’s bickering. After all the revelations last week, I was nervous for our romance going forward. Yi-deum’s bullheadedness is a double-edged sword and while she understood Jin-wook wasn’t at fault for the things his mother did, his defense of Dr. Ko (even if his intentions were merely to diffuse the situation as much as possible) pitted him against Yi-deum. For a person that has trouble trusting others, Yi-deum had forged a bond with Jin-wook and when he didn’t firmly stand on her side of the ring, it hit hard. So while they managed to regain their friendship this week, I still had concerns about the romance because I can’t see Yi-deum being able to move past this enough to pursue a deeper relationship.

WC12-00177.jpg

However, when we discovered Mom not only alive but under the care of Nurse Choi, I felt hope. Because this development suggests that maybe Dr. Ko did do something to help Mom. Maybe she helped fake Mom’s death and smuggle her away with Nurse Choi so she could be safe. If that’s the case, then the reason she so fervently insisted that she didn’t know anything was for Mom’s safety (as well as her own, were Jo Gap-soo to ever discover the deception). And I can’t help but wonder if maybe Sang-ho had been in on it as well, because while it might be possible to pull off without him, it would’ve been infinitely easier if he’d been onboard.

And guys, Mom is alive! I mean, okay, we all called that one but I’m still so thrilled to see her. Her reactions were very muted, and while that can easily be attributed to trauma, I have a niggling fear that maybe Mom doesn’t remember. Because I can’t imagine that she wouldn’t have searched for Yi-deum. They meant everything to each other and Jo Gap-soo didn’t care enough to look into Mom’s life so it stands to reason that she could’ve taken Yi-deum and run away. Either way, we’ll just have to wait and see.

I’m glad that we didn’t waste a lot of time with Jo Gap-soo this week either. I will say though, that he sure is narrowing his pool of cohorts. I guess after murdering his best friend, and gaining the secret ledger of his misdeeds, he feels he has nothing more to fear, but Hyung-soo was privy to secrets as well and Jo didn’t even consider that he could stab him in the back before tossing him aside. Regardless, his oversight was a boon for our heroes and I wonder how Yi-deum will use this information to her advantage. I’m happy to say, I’m pumped for next week!
