  • Witch’s Court: Episode 4WC04-00200-1.jpg

Some of the hardest things to swallow are your own words, and Yi-deum has a hefty helping to choke back. She’s always drawn a line between herself and the victims, but now she’s forced to see things from their perspective, and it isn’t pretty. Luckily, she has a lot of spunk and a talented team to back her up no matter how fiendish their opponent may be.

EPISODE 4 RECAP

WC04-00003.jpg

Arriving home, Yi-deum dances about as she strips, unaware that Sang-yoon is watching her from hidden cameras. It isn’t until she’s out of the shower that she notices that her bathroom mirror is blinking. Pulling off the knob, she is shocked to discover the tiny camera.

Meanwhile, Jin-wook returns to the building and waits for the elevator, spotting Sang-yoon as he exits the stairwell. Jin-wook starts to follow, but the realtor catches him to say that he’s found a new tenant for Yi-deum’s apartment.

Thinking quickly, Jin-wook asks if this person was wearing a black cap like he’d just seen on Sang-yoon, and when the realtor confirms it, he demands the passcode for Yi-deum’s apartment. Panicked, Jin-wook fumbles with the keypad but succeeds in getting the door open before cautiously stepping inside. (Did he just grab a beer can for a weapon?)

WC04-00019-1.jpg WC04-00022-1.jpg

Terrified, Yi-deum hides around a corner, clutching a frying pan. As Jin-wook’s footsteps draw near, she squeezes her eyes shut and jumps out, pan flailing. Fortunately, Yi-deum misses, and Jin-wook grabs her arms to stop her swinging again. Finally looking at her presumed assailant, the relief from seeing a familiar face saps the strength from Yi-deum’s legs, and Jin-wook catches her as she collapses to the floor.

Worried, Jin-wook asks if she’s okay, but Yi-deum explodes, demanding to know what he was thinking by barging into her apartment like that. Jin-wook starts to tell her about seeing Sang-yoon, but she cuts him off by asking if he’s entered her apartment before when she wasn’t home, and if he’s the pervert that planted the cameras. Frustrated, Jin-wook can only let out a sigh of disbelief.

COMMENTS

Ooof! That really tugs at the heartstrings. The loss of her mother has always been Yi-deum’s driving force, so it makes sense that on her toughest day (and birthday to boot?), she dreams of the person she most wants to see. That entire exchange was lovely and sad, and it just drives home how deep Yi-deum’s scar runs. It makes you wonder if part of the reason she avoids empathizing with the pain of others is because her own pain is so great.

This episode was so satisfying. As much as I love Yi-deum, her disregard for the feelings of the victims tended to leave a bad taste in my mouth so, like Jin-wook, I felt gratified to see Yi-deum forced into their shoes for once. It was a hard lesson, and while I don’t think Yi-deum will suddenly be as empathetic as Jin-wook, I do think that she’ll be a bit more cautious in regards to victims going forward.

Yi-deum’s always argued that winning cases requires sacrifices, and this time, it was her turn to pay up. I was impressed with how she handled it and applaud her for her instincts in copying the evidence, but I only wish she’d felt able to trust Jin-wook rather than leaving him in the dark until nearly the final hour. Having basically grown up on her own, she lacks the ability to rely on anyone other than herself, and I’m looking forward to seeing Jin-wook break down that wall.

WC04-00273.jpg

I really loved their exchange on the courthouse steps because I think there’s more than one way to interpret what was said. You could take it at face value that while she made a lovely speech in court, people don’t really change… but I think she meant that she’s not really as cold-hearted as she would have everyone believe. And how cute was the way that Jin-wook just smiled at her? He’s slowly starting to see that she’s really not made of stone, and that final scene where he looked at her so tenderly as she cried just goes to show that he’s already got one foot in the danger zone.

I’m nervous about Jo Gap-soo’s interest in Yi-deum, and now that he knows who her mother is, that concern has only intensified. It’s not hard to do the math, and if he really is her father, it won’t take long for him to put the pieces together—and who knows what he’ll do with that information?

Not to mention that there seems to be something with Jin-wook as well. Who was a teenaged Jin-wook searching for? And does Jo Gap-soo only know his mother professionally, or is there something more sinister at play?

Witchs-Court-Featured.jpeg&key=1a150abd9

New stills for “Witch’s Court†were released, featuring Yoon Hyun Min’s heart fluttering potential in the upcoming episode.

In the revealed stills, Jin Wook (Yoon Hyun Min) is seen at Yi Deum’s (Jung Ryeo Won) house, looking stunned. Many are curious to see how Jin Wook would react to Yi Deum’s messy house, as his own house is always kept spotlessly clean.

Calling it a “Victim Support Service,†Jin Wook lets Yi Deum stay at his house, since she is still anxious from being targeted as a hidden camera victim. The next still shows Jin Wook cooking some steak possibly for Yi Deum

The last set of stills show Yi Deum and Jin Wook in comfortable wear, with Yi Deum passed out from drinking beer and Jin Wook facepalming in despair.

SOLJI (EXID) – LEANING ON THE WIND (ë°”ëžŒì— ê¸°ëŒ€) WITCH’S COURT OST

When I open my eyes
You, in my blurry memories, disappear

Will I be able to see you again?
I close my eyes

We’re stuck in time
Our story scattered between our fingers

Some days, sometimes
The memories won’t stop
So I’m leaning on the wind, calling out to you alone

I want to go back to you
So I close my eyes
I can’t let you go from my heart
Even for a single day

Actually

Some days, sometimes
The tears won’t stop
So I’m leaning on the wind, calling out to you alone

If I meet you again some day
There’s a song I want to sing
So I’m leaning on the wind, singing it alone

KIM BO KYUNG – TELL ME (WITCH’S COURT OST)

I’m difficultly walking
One step, two steps on this endless road
With traces of pain that won’t be erased
My footsteps stop

Tell me there’s a way
Help me from my exhaustion
You’re fading away
But I want to hold you
So my earnestness that I wanted to tell you
Can finally reach you

In the dream I always have
You’re always next to me
Always one person by my side
I wish it was you right now

Tell me there’s a way
Help me from my exhaustion
You’re fading away
But I want to hold you
So my earnestness that I wanted to tell you
Can finally reach you

I lost my way
you can raise me
can’t kill my heart
I should find you
I lost my way
you say nothing at all

Please come back to me
So I can breathe again
Please appear before me
So I can touch you, so it won’t hurt anymore
So I can reach you like I always did before

  • Witch’s Court: Episode 5WC5_00257.jpg

What do you do when you come face to face with an old enemy you thought you put behind you? Our hero will find out this week as he’s haunted by an old case—and a young girl’s life. But things might go differently this time because he has a team supporting him, plus a whip-smart heroine who (reluctantly) believes in him.

EPISODE 5 RECAP

We open on Jo Gap-soo sitting alongside the other two mayoral candidates for their official televised debate. The first question asked is about where Jo Gap-soo’s wife is since she hasn’t been seen in years, but Jo Gap-soo brushes it off by asking that family matters be left outside the debate.

One of the other candidates, Kim Moon-song, seizes this very public opportunity to confront Jo Gap-soo about the charge of rape he was accused of 30 years ago, and the victim’s subsequent suicide. Jo Gap-soo retains his composure and notes that he was acquitted for that charge, but his expression turns tense as Kim Moon-song declares, “The victims of [Jo Gap-soo’s] torture are here today!â€

WC5_00044.jpg

The silence is deafening, and Prosecutor Min watches the debate with interest. Kim Moon-song continues, “Imagine they were here… could you say you have nothing to be ashamed of?†Although Jo Gap-soo is momentarily relieved that there are no victims in the audience, his self-control is visibly gone, and he struggles to respond to the question.

After the debate, the displeased Jo Gap-soo wonders if Prosecutor Min was behind this ambush. He is shocked to learn from Sang-ho that Yi-deum is the daughter of Kwak Young-shil, and furthermore, that Jin-wook is the son of Jo Kae-sook.

Sang-ho expresses his worry that these two are working with Prosecutor Min now, but Jo Gap-soo smiles at this turn of events as he contemplates, “It depends on how you use them. Even a tiger is nothing but a kitty cat if you declaw it.†But the smile drops from his face at the news that a “Chairman Ahn†is going to sell the hotel, and Jo Gap-soo darkly mutters that the hotel was his only connection.

WC5_00087.jpg

Five years ago. We flash back to when Jin-wook was still a psychiatrist, not a prosecutor. In court, a young girl stumbles over her words as she tries to explain how her stepfather, Choi Hyun-tae, regularly assaulted her, but she dissolves into sobs as the impatient prosecutor scares her. The judge orders the girl, Ah-reum, to be led away.

Jin-wook takes the stand to testify to Ah-reum’s trauma, but is disgusted by the defense lawyer’s suggestion that the 10-year-old Ah-reum was curious about sex and consented to Hyun-tae’s assault of her. Jin-wook explains that a child may confuse a desire for affection with sexual curiosity if an adult manipulates them, and that Ah-reum’s uterus has been damaged so badly that she may suffer from infertility. Jin-wook stresses: â€œThe sexual trauma will haunt her forever. Even an adult would have a hard time with this, and she hasn’t even hit puberty. Are you saying it’s okay because she was curious… and that it was voluntary?†

WC5_00108.jpg WC5_00105.jpg

Despite Jin-wook’s impassioned pleas, due to the lack of other witnesses and the defendant’s good career, the judge only orders a prison sentence of five years.

After court, a furious Jin-wook slams the prosecutor against the wall and blames him for not performing well enough to get a longer conviction. The prosecutor is unrepentant as he blames Ah-reum for not being a better witness, and actually congratulates himself for even getting five years because the defendant’s brother-in-law is the mayor.

COMMENTS

Well this case is disturbing. Hyun-tae’s smile in particular gave me the shivers, as if he expected Ah-reum to be happy in this creepy “love†fantasy that he concocted. It was unclear if Hyun-tae realized the extent of his delusion, given that he thinks Ah-reum is “his,†but that is the point—he never viewed Ah-reum as a person, but as an object for him to play with. And in Ah-reum, we have another strong portrayal of a victim, this time an abused child. The confrontation between Ah-reum and Hyun-tae at the hospital was a particularly effective scene.

Although it would have been physically easy for Ah-reum to get away from Hyun-tae, her debilitating fear stopped her, and the music and camera shots did an excellent job of building the claustrophobic atmosphere for the viewer. It was also the perfect choice to keep the focus on Ah-reum after Hyun-tae was pulled away, because even after he is gone, there is little relief to be found for her. We can see how Ah-reum’s world has become smaller because of Hyun-tae—literally smaller because she doesn’t travel outside, and figuratively smaller because she is consumed by the fear of her abuser.

However, despite appreciating the strong characterization that Witch’s Courtbrings to its victims, I can’t help but think that it’s missing the mark with its perpetrators. The last two criminals have been a tad melodramatic, and today Hyun-tae was one twirling mustache away from tying Ah-reum to an old railroad track. The show’s exaggerated villainy undermines one of the scariest things about sexual assaults, or child abuse-and that is how depressingly common these crimes are. It is not the maniacally laughing villain who elaborately plots these crimes, but your colleague, your neighbor, the person you would least suspect. I was hopeful at the start that this show would shine a light on the unspoken dangers in society, not just the evil outliers, and would like to see more nuance in the criminal characters as we go forward.

WC5_00441.jpg

I actually thought this show was strongest in its premiere, when it addressed the everyday misogyny that Yi-deum faced, rather than the laser focus it has applied to these last cases. The show seems more interested in developing the mystery and weekly cases, but I connected so much with Yi-deum’s professional struggles with workplace sexism that I’m disappointed that that hasn’t featured more in recent weeks. I am glad that this has left space for Jin-wook’s development though, who is such a sweetheart, because he hasn’t had as much to do in the shadow of Yi-deum’s outspoken (and badass) personality.

Jin-wook’s reason for becoming a prosecutor doesn’t surprise me one little bit, although it was interesting to see that it didn’t come from an untested academic desire for justice, when I honestly thought it might have. In fact, Jin-wook’s conviction in his responsibility comes from the opposite—he has already witnessed firsthand how poorly served victims are, and wants to be the one to help turn that tide. (Although I do think that in the case of Ah-reum, he would have been more helpful as her psychiatrist than prosecutor.)

Until this point, Jin-wook has seemed to be tightly in control of his emotions, and his resolve as a prosecutor unquestioned, but after this week I wonder if he is too emotionally invested. He is clearly still haunted by his “failure†to protect Ah-reum all those years ago, and he was far too quick to resort to violence against Hyun-tae for my liking. Even if it was satisfying, Jin-wook is still a prosecutor, and he needs to have moral authority. And apart from that, Jin-wook will find it a very difficult burden to bear in the Crimes Against Girls Unit if he takes on too much responsibility and doesn’t learn to step back when necessary. Hopefully, I don’t have to worry about that though, because in a refreshing move, Jin-wook went straight to Yi-deum to ask for help on the case rather than choose the renegade option, which I feared he would. And you know our girl Yi-deum will have no problem pulling Jin-wook away from a tricky case if she needs to.

  • Witch’s Court: Episode 6witch06-00033.jpg

Just as the handling of Ah-reum’s case five years ago caused our heroes’ current dilemma, facing that past demon has consequences of its own. Luckily, not all consequences are dire, and this episode is a breath of fresh air after recent events. Leave it to Yi-deum to make the best of a bad situation.

EPISODE 6 RECAP

WC06-00004.jpg WC06-00005.jpg

Following Ah-reum’s tracker signal, Jin-wook and Yi-deum arrive at an intersection at the same time Hyun-tae’s van darts across. Unfortunately, neither of them notices and Jin-wook slams on his breaks to avoid colliding with the oncoming traffic. Our prosecutors continue to follow the signal only to find the bracelet discarded on the side of the road. Reasoning that Hyun-tae must be hiding since he’s barred from flying, Yi-deum quickly calls to look up Hyun-tae’s credit card activity.

Meanwhile, Ah-reum awakens to find herself in her room at home. She shuffles out into the kitchen where dinner’s on the table and calls out to her mother. She realizes something is off just as a door opens, and Hyun-tae emerges holding a cake with a single lit candle.

WC06-00009.jpg

Arriving at Ah-reum’s apartment complex, Yi-deum informs Jin-wook that the charge statements show that Hyun-tae has always been around Ah-reum. Investigator Gu runs up and tells them that the CCTV shows Hyun-tae’s car nearby. Realizing that Hyun-tae must’ve always been watching, Jin-wook pinpoints the apartment directly across from Ah-reum’s (which turns out to belong to Hyun-tae’s father).

Inside, Hyun-tae gleefully tells a sobbing Ah-reum that today marks the beginning of their life together. Horrified, Ah-reum shakily calls out for her mother, but Hyun-tae says that he had to send her mother far away, which only causes Ah-reum’s cries to grow more frantic. Laughing benignly, he wipes her tears as he playfully tells her to stop crying—this is a happyoccasion. Creepy…

WC06-00025.jpg WC06-00021.jpg

In the hall, Investigator Gu hesitates to break in, but Jin-wook promises to take responsibility. The sound of the drill alerts Hyun-tae, so he locks Ah-reum in his room and grabs a nearby kitchen knife. Our team bursts inside as Hyun-tae swings the knife wildly, accusing Jin-wook of coming between him and Ah-reum while Jin-wook spits that he became a prosecutor to catch scum like Hyun-tae.

In a fit of rage, Hyun-tae lunges forward, but Yi-deum heroically dives between them, the knife slicing her side as she falls to the ground. Jin-wook deftly takes Hyun-tae down and Yi-deum glances at her blood-coated hand, releasing an annoyed sigh before she passes out.

COMMENTS

I had my suspicions that Jin-wook’s mystery woman might’ve been Mom but I honestly didn’t expect them to figure it out so soon. Regardless, I’m glad, since that means that our heroes can start digging for the truth and hopefully won’t be left in the dark until the final hour. I have to wonder, though, where is Mom? All we know is that Jo Gap-soo nabbed her and had her locked away in a mental institution under a false name. Is she still there? Or are their more twists to be discovered? I just hope that she’s alive, because after all this time, Yi-deum deserves to have her mom back!

Speaking of moms, I’m relieved that this show is avoiding potential incest drama. I suppose there’s no guarantee we’re out of the woods, but with the revelation of Dr. Jo’s involvement in Mom’s captivity, I’m hoping that’s the extent of her connection to Jo Gap-soo. This show has so much going on already, I feel like delving into that mess would unnecessarily complicate the plot (and the romance!).

WC06-00391.jpg

I find my interest in our bad guys growing—and I’m not talking about the cartoonish case-of-the-week foes that the past few episodes have churned out, but our recurring villains, Jo Gap-soo & Co. I’m really interested in his wife, and I can’t help but wonder if her coma is medically induced and how the game will change when she regains consciousness. Alternatively, Lawyer Heo is such a twisted person that I’m dying to know her backstory and how she came to be that way. Surely she’s not just naturally a witch. And Sang-ho is an enigma—his face reveals nothing of his emotions, and if this show wasn’t firmly placed in the real world, I’d suspect he was a robot.

Last but not least, what is going on with the ominous Hyungtae Group? I doubt that the battery case with the youngest son is really over, especially after discovering that Prosecutor Min knows the victim. The only problem is that the rich and powerful like to play dirty, so it’s hard to say whether or not we’ll get to see this case in court next week or if it’s going to be a longer fight.

On a lighter note, how cute was this episode? I’ve always loved Yi-deum’s interactions with Jin-wook and this hour was chock-full of their antics. It’s so amusing how he pretends to be annoyed while obviously finding her cute. He complained about her stream of texts but missed them when they stopped, argued that she wasn’t that injured but pampered her anyway, and when she kissed him, he looked pretty disappointed when she passed out. He may not want to admit it, but Yi-deum’s claims that he has a crush on her don’t seem to be too far off the mark.

They're so cute together. I love how she teases him about him having a crush her and how she just ends up casually kissing him.

I feel a bit worried that Prosecutor Yeo's mother is going to be extremely opposed to their relationship due to the events that happened between Prosecutor Yeo's mother and Ma Yi Deum's mother. :/

but somehow i wish Yeo's mother can be kind to her, perhaps helping her get reunited with her mom?

cause im kinda cautious when she had history past with the villain characters, BSH & JGS.
