With Japan’s Queen of Pop set to end her career, many are left wondering who the front-runner for the opening ceremonies is now.

After a highly successful career spanning two and a half decades, Namie Amuro announced that she would be calling it quits in September of 2018 and leaving singing to perhaps take up needlepoint or crime, like so many other retirees in Japan.

But along with laments from her fans, the internet has been abuzz with talk about the Tokyo Olympics in 2020. Amuro was considered a front-runner to perform at the opening ceremonies due to her decorated career and international recognition. But with her heading out to greener pastures, who is the prime candidate now?

As one might expect with a question that is essentially “Who is your favorite musician?†The Internet was a chaotic mess of suggestions over who and who not to select for the prestigious role of… um, opening ceremony singing person.

However, who do you think is the leading runner for the representative for Japan at 2020 Olympics given the disbandment of SMAP and retirement of Namie Amuro?

Could it be a solo singer which burst out into the scenes of 1990s like Ayumi, Utada or Fukuyama?

Or more classic singers like Koji Tamaki, Toshinobu Kubota or Hideaki Tokunaga?

Or the monster bands like Mr. Children, Southern All Stars or B'z?

Or artists which are getting more active in the International scene like One Ok Rock, Babymetal or X-Japan?

Or idols/artists from Johnny, 46/48 or LDH?

Or Anisong artists like Mizuki Nana, Kalafina or Lisa?

Or are there other artists you think will be the representative singer for Japan? Do share.

I still think she should perform, she can just make it a special performance.

I thinks it's probably what she'll do. She's a legend and famous internationally so i doubt not even an special performance will come from her. Maybe Perfume will be a speacial feature during the opem cerimony? I mean they pretty much represent Japan in the techno pop area.

Namie should still do it even after retirement but yeah babymetal and one ok rock seem like good choices since they are more internationally known but a variety wouldn't hurt either. I just hope it isn't someone who I hate lol They should also get an orchestra to do AOT theme 😆 That would be awesome! I'm looking forward to all the Anime/Nintendo theme parts the most

For the opening show i think it should be a mixture of domestically famous artists and internationally known artists. With which they end up might just depend in what artistic and musical direction they want to go. It doesn't have to be pure pop to appeal for the masses like 2004's show with Tiesto has shown. And japan has such a diverse music market.

But i would bet on it that someone from Amuse will take part in it. When you ask for internationally know artists, that's where you go.

As a Babymetal fan i would of course love to see them perform in the opening show and while i don't think that all of their music is suited for such a show (imagine them performing TOTD and leaving most of the viewers behind completely spechless about what they just witnessed) but they have such powerful anthems which would fit perfectly from a stylistic point of view. The One is the perfect example which is often mentioned in this context. This song is made for huge audiences and extensive stage production and while being true to their musical style it's also suited for more casual listeners because it's not too extreme. I would love to see a song like that being performed by them.

What i also would love to see is some fancy stage production which showcases the "high tech" japan. Mikiko already took part in the 2016 closing ceremony and the work with Rhizomatics for some of Elevenplays performances or some shows of Perfume was fantastic in so many ways. Such things would also fit perfectly in such a huge scale show.

Babymetal sounds great. Not only they have this international scale of popularity and success, their music also showcasing what is Japanese uniqueness when it comes to popular culture. I would like them to perform Megitsune bcs it is so Babymetal and it can also showcasing what the Japanese traditional music can do with modern music (in this case, metal). Just imagining them singing it in front of international viewers, with such energy + a group of people playing taiko is just sooo cool :D.

This would suggest Perfume, LDH or big-named Johnny's groups (Arashi, Kanjani8, KinKi Kids all have had hi-tech stage productions), though I don't foresee Johnnys taking part in the Olympics (aside from being official presenters for TV stations).
