Gemma Wilson, 35, (@Gemtinytrekkers) was around 4,500 metres into the Annapurna Circuit trek in Nepal with her 15-year-old stepson.

After stopping for refreshments in a tea house, their day of trekking through the mountains turned into a living nightmare when the shop owner began chasing them with wooden planks and rocks.

"It was just a little tea stop along the way and we were just going to walk past and she said 'come stop and have a drink', she seemed very friendly to start with.

"I didn't order anything, I just got my stepson a black tea.

"I always ask how much something is first before buying and for some reason I didn't this time. I had always paid 50 rupee for black tea.

"When I got up to pay she told it was 150 rupee ($1.50 USD / £1 GBP). I asked her again and she repeated it, so I got the money out and paid her, but I said to her it was seriously pricey."

the Nepali woman is a legend

apparently the Brit lady stayed there overnight and didn't pay the full amount due which would understandably incense the Nepali lady who works hard and goes above and beyond to provide a service that would be rare to find in those parts. but ofc the Brit chose to play like she was an innocent, benevolent tourist being randomly attacked by a crazy native just for existing

I can't stand tourists who think they're entitled to pay native people in pennies or "haggle for fun" just because they're foreign and "already poor" in their eyes, or because they think everyone abroad is inherently trying to rip them off. if you can afford a backpacking trip in Nepal you can afford to pay 1 pound for fucking tea without being a snide asshole about it

i agree with you, check out her twitter, she loves showing off her jet-set lifestyle so she can easily afford to pay 100 rupees more than she was hoping to pay.

100 rupees is literally pennies to her, yet she has the nerve to haggle to a woman who probably breaks her back running a business on a remote part of the mountain where the nearest phone is a day and a half away.

and now she's licensing her video and spreading it amongst news outlets to earn some more cash for business class flights as well as handily demonising this poor lady from Nepal. absolutely disgusting.

for real. it makes me so annoyed that people with the rare ability to go and see the wonder of the world in person choose to treat it so selfishly instead of respecting it and the people who live there. her holidays are wasted on people like her

The comment under the video explains what the woman says to her:

She's on fire. She is telling that your son is good but you're bad. You don't consider Nepalese as people but consider dog or donkey. She is suggesting that you've no right to disrespect and demean her being a tourist. She has done a lot of struggle to take the supplies from City, and very difficult as well as costly to transport the materials. Hence don't expect the price range of Pokhara or Kathmandu. Others pay the prices and even thank her for the services which gives her motivation to serve the tourist in such a rural mountain place, but you debate to pay Rs.150 (Eq. $1.5). She also thinks that you hear from butthole not from the head and you're a crazy woman. She repeated 3 times that only your son is good, not you. These are her words, just letting you know what she meant, nothing above represents my opinion.

Siding with Nepali woman, she's a badass.

As a european who has visited poor non white countries, locals have always tried to rip me off whether it be at restaurants, markets, stools etc because they always assume I'm rich (and American) just because I'm white HOWEVER the English family is in the wrong and theyneed to stfu and stop playing the victim.

1. 150 rupees for tea is chump change especially since tea in a restaurant in England costs the same and most times even more!

2. The English woman was trying to rip off the old lady herself which is rude and disrespectful after she opened up their home to them.

3. For them to film the old woman and post it online while playing the victim is truly disgusting.

If you are entitled, don't have manners and don't research the way other people live in their own countries then don't fucking travel.

This makes me so angry. This is why I don't haggle on vacation. The only person "enjoying" it is the tourist. Like she can't pay $1 for a cup of tea but you know that bitch has no issue buying Starbucks. She's trying to defend herself in The Mirror comments, but she didn't have to buy the tea if she thought it was too expensive. She admits she paid the price upfront and was complaining about it afterwards.

I'm not saying the store owner acted in a good way, but fuck this woman's entitlement.
