LOL, nobody is buying TWICE digitally. That's why it can't be said they have an actual public hit like SNSD and Kara.

They haven't been in recochoku's top 50 for at least 2 weeks, they might it a digital certification for TT..... In like 2020.

Are you sure? AKB keeps mentioning them, there were also long lines for their handshake event and they're releasing another digital hit next month.

Just because AKB mentions them doesn't mean anything. Just because they have a big handshake event doesn't mean anything (all the 48 groups have big handshake events and their songs aren't public hits). And how can they have another digital hit when they haven't had one to begin with? You're welcome to go through the digital charts for the past few months to see how TWICE is absent: http://aramajapan.com/tag/recochoku/

Okay, but then what about BlackPink? and maybe I'm too new to kpop but if Twice isn't a big deal in Japan why do all the articles and fans say they are?

Do you have no live?  You are such a fake with your fake concern about Twice laugh.png

You're correct and Twice's digitals are proof of it. Twice is not a top artists in Japan and their album sales ARE a result of bulk buying and lottery ticket gimmicks and gori oshi mediaplay. Their digitals on relevant charts and Karaoke charts show that the general public doesn't care.

Twice's success is comparable to BTS and those kind of top Kpop groups where they are loved only by Japanese Kpop fans and have a big Kpop fanbase in Japan. But the general public still don't care. Twice is now coming back in October in Japan with other big girl groups like Nogi. I wonder whether they can survive that competition against legitimately popular Japanese girl groups and withstand the heat with their mediaplayed Kpop success

BlackPink is another fanbase act with no public attention.

It's mediaplay when it comes to TWICE for the most part. They have an album that sold well due to gimmicks and people (mostly teenage girls) watch their music videos on YouTube for free, but that's fans, not the actual public. The average high school girl may know "TT", but the average person in the street won't. They're not at that level.

KPop fans know very little about the Japanese industry so they're not a valid source of anything. And as far as articles go, it's just like ones in the West about KPop: they're released because they know the KPop fandom will spread it and they'll get more clicks, not because it's an actual relevant thing to the public.

What kind of groups are popular in Japan right now? Is it true female solos will make a comeback?

The 46 groups have overtaken the 48 groups. Besides Arashi, that's it as far as idols. The 48s are in decline. LDH is in decline.

Nobody is holding their breath over a female soloist comeback. The time just isn't right and the girls just aren't interesting.

#twice is still top 20 on oricon daily chart and #32 on oricon weekly chart even after almost 3 months of release. and their 2 hi touch events (gimmicks) alrd ended last two month 0u0plz.png so how is their album only selling well due to gimmicks? please give credit where it's due.

Do you even know how much you have to sell to get those positions on the daily chart? A couple hundred, if that.

well yeah it is amazing laugh.png my point is they still sell quite well without gimmicks. normally groups that sell well due to gimmicks, they will be out of chart very soon.

I don't consider selling a few hundred every week to be selling quite well. As someone who looks at the industry daily, I'm not seeing this TWICE phenomenon that KPop fans are seeing.

well except they don't sell a few hundred every week. #twice released almost 3 months ago and last week they still sell 1700+ copies. and before that, they sell way more per week.

what about streamings then, i dont know much about Japanes industry but i found some info in the digital thread :

according to RIAJ 2017 Yearbook, streaming is becoming more popular than digital sales in Japan.

"Subscription services continued to record growth and achieved a steep 61% increase in terms of value to 20 billion yen from the previous year. Regarding the composition of services in digital music sales, subscription services made up 38% of sales (26% in the previous year) versus 33% of sales for single tracks (40% in the previous year). This marks the first time that sales of subscription services have surpassed sales of single tracks and subscription services accounted for the highest percentage of digital music sales".

RIAJ provides a breakdown of the numbers for the first quarter of 2017.

Single song downloads:

27 million (worth 4364 million Yen)

Album downloads:

2.5 million (worth 2586 million Yen)

Streaming (value):

Paid/subscription: 5547 million Yen

Free/ad supported: 16 million Yen

And Twice is doing pretty well on Line and Apple music (2 biggest sites as i know)

Is it amazing? And to your point, you also have to look at who was releasing albums during that time period.

still doesn't take away their amazing longevity in sales imstupid.png all the ones that release album same time as #twice are nowhere to be seen except spitz

If you're referring to Kanjani8 who released an album in the same week as Twice, and unlike Twice (where all versions of their album are still available everywhere in stores), Kanjani8's limited versions are long gone since the very first week,  leaving only the one edition that's being coveted and restocked every 2-3 days. Even during the week of the release, the limited versions keep getting sold out and didn't get restocked until 2-3 days. If there's no stock then there's no chance to buy, while Twice are lucky enough to be under a label with smart distribution who keeps making their album available in stores, but J-Storm who manages Kanjani8's distribution has always been so stingy.

You just saved from making me a thread about current kpop status in Japan and possibility to revive.

They haven't been in recochoku's top 50 for at least 2 weeks, they might it a digital certification for TT..... In like 2020.

From what I saw, they was on top 20 for the first month, on the second month around 50 and still somewhere on top 80 - 50 on a third month. It's actually pretty impressive, they acctually doing better digitaly than any other kpop act in a recent time.

Are you sure? AKB keeps mentioning them, there were also long lines for their handshake event and they're releasing another digital hit next month.

I remember around four or five years ago, kpop fans also used to be very hyped whenever some Japanese persona of fame was mentioning their faves.

In general, kpop/Korean sources exarating the position of kpop acts in Japan, since they want to portray a better picture.

I may be ignorant, but didn't they also had also random photo cards?
However, it does seems like their physical album sales superior to other kpop acts recently, considering that others acts also use gimmicks. Unless I missed something.

I'm pretty ignorant, but I don't think that streaming reached to the level of digitals sales yet.

daoko killing it!

yes, digital sales everywhere are in strong decline, streaming is the future and of course it's the younger demographic that has already moved on to streaming. i think it's interesting to watch how well twice will do in the future, for now it's fair to say they had a successful debut.
